Book excerpt: It is time to move on. You will never forget her, but you must live your life. Floyd has been hearing this a lot lately after losing his wife Betty a few years back. So much around their house reminds him of her – from the furniture to the garden, to the beautiful dolls room she created where dolls and other toys lounge around in wait, for another adventure. Realizing he needs help around the house, Floyd puts an advert out and hires the lovely Mabel. This sends Irene, a neighbour of Floyd's, into a tizzy, as she has had her eye on Floyd for a while. With Irene scheming to worm her way deeper into Floyd's life by any means imaginable, she will soon come to realize that Floyd has protectors that no one knows about. Betty managed to bring the dolls and toys to life many years ago, and together with Jane and Jack, Mabel's great-niece and -nephew, they work together to defeat the villainous Irene. With love on the line, can they defeat the house sitter's nemesis?

Book Over Time

Download or read book Over Time written by Bob Falconi and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's sport's world, the modern day athlete has attained rock-star status. To those who are legends and well deserving of their status, we give accolades. All too often however, we hear about those who cheat, use illegal drugs or disrespect their fans, their teammates and the game itself. What is happening in the sports world? Does no one still play for the love of the game anymore? Fortunately, the answer to that question is, "Yes." There is a group of men in Canada, who in 2019 played hockey together for 50 years. They are one of Canada's oldest non-professional, affiliate or school team in Canadian history. While they do not get paid, there is no fanfare and they do not enjoy celebrity status, they have achieved a level of distinction in hockey that, in all likelihood, will never be attained again. Ironically, they named themselves the Rebels, and they have blazed a path where no hockey team has gone before. Just for the love of the game. The book follows their path and delves into the elements of their success. Most adult teams of this nature last an average of three years, so what drove these guys? What motivated them? What did they have that made them so special in Canada's game? How did they compete and continue to win year after year? It's a magical story. If you are tired of the antics of some of the modern day athletes, this is a story that needs to be heard.

Book The Art of Losing

Download or read book The Art of Losing written by Luke Alfred and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2012-11-08 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since South Africa’s readmission to world cricket in 1991, the Proteas have played in six World Cups (and four World T20 tournaments) and have been knocked out in all of them. The reasons range from the weather and misreading the Duckworth–Lewis table to being outwitted on the field itself. In the most recent tournaments, though, they have shown a scandalous lack of nerve in the pressure-cooker of international knockout cricket. Drawing from interviews with the major protagonists and behind-the-scenes officials, The Art of Losing recreates the drama of these matches. With fresh anecdotes, stories and insights, it also attempts to explain why World Cup failure has become a habit. Does the problem lie with coaching, with communication issues, or with a lack of independent thinking among the players? Is it the product of a pampered professional environment, or of the South African schooling system? The Art of Losing will ruffle feathers but will also attempt to explain the ‘choker’ tag that has become so widespread. Is it fair? The Proteas, after all, win a high proportion of their one-day matches and have some of the best cricketers in the world. Why, then, do they invariably fail to clear that final hurdle?

Book Baseball and the House of David

Download or read book Baseball and the House of David written by P.J. Dragseth and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-08-21 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: House of David barnstorming baseball (1915-1957) was played without pre-determined schedules, leagues, player statistics or standings. The Davids quickly gained popularity for their hirsute appearance and flashy, fast-paced style of play. During their 200 seasons, they travelled as many as 30,000 miles, criss-crossing the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Benton Harbor teams invented the pepper game and were winners year after year, becoming legends in barnstorming baseball. Initially a loose affiliation of players, the Davids expanded to three teams--Western, Central and Eastern--as their reputation grew, and hired outsiders to fill the rosters. Prominent among them were pitchers Grover Cleveland Alexander and Charlie "Chief" Bender, both player managers in the early 1930s. They resisted the color barrier, eagerly facing Negro League teams everywhere. In 1934, before their largest crowd to date, they defeated the first Negro team invited to the famed Denver Post Tournament, the great Kansas City Monarchs, for the championship.

Book Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Biography

Download or read book Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Biography written by Ian Macleay and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is an Old Trafford legend. He blazed through a decade at Manchester United, scoring 126 goals in 366 appearances for the Red Devils. The Norwegian striker became famous for his uncanny ability to score in the dying minutes of important games, often coming on as a 'super-sub' - most famously scoring the last gasp winner against Bayern Munich to win United the 1999 Champions League, and secure the famed trophy Treble - before moving on to new adventures as a manager in Norway, following a career-ending injury. And at the end of 2018, the circle completed itself: Ole returned to Manchester United, this time as the caretaker manager, stepping into the breach after the unhappy departure of Jose Mourinho, and winning eight games in a row to restore a beleagured United to stunning form. The Old Trafford faithful are once more singing his name loud and proud. In this informative and insightful book, sports writer Ian MacLeay charts the highs and lows of the Baby Faced Assassin's career, to provide an in-depth look at both the man and the striker who will go down forever as an icon in Manchester United history. It is a must-read for any sports fan.

Book Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head

Download or read book Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head written by Ian Redford and published by Black & White Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-14 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era before big money arrived, Ian Redford, the son of a Perthshire farmer, was stigmatised as football's rich kid. But, in reality, there was no silver spoon. And at an early age, when it was discovered that Redford was completely deaf in one ear, he was advised not to play contact sport of any kind. But this did not deter him from pursuing his dream of being a professional footballer. At the age of 16, Ian Redford's career took off when he made his debut for Dundee FC and at the age of 19 he broke the Scottish transfer record when he signed for Glasgow Rangers for GBP 210,000. After nearly six years in Glasgow, Redford returned east to play for Dundee United under the notorious Jim McLean, and his career reached new and unexpected heights. Football has been a key part of Ian Redford's life but behind the success and the goals, his family has been touched by tragedy. When Ian was seven years old, his baby brother contracted leukemia and his death five years later devastated Ian's family. It was an event the family would never recover from but it also gave the young Ian Redford the motivation to succeed which he channelled into his football. It was the start of his own journey which gave him challenges and opportunities he could never have dreamt of. Insightful, moving and entertaining, Ian Redford's autobiography is a fascinating read throughout as his journey takes him from rural Perthshire to the biggest football stages and on to, amongst other things, a spell as a FIFA registered players' agent and brief career as a businessman in Eastern Europe with Sergei Baltacha as they discovered how not to deal with the local Russian mafia.
