Book Geological History of Britain and Ireland

Download or read book Geological History of Britain and Ireland written by Nigel H. Woodcock and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-04-12 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain and Ireland have a remarkably varied geology for so small a fragment of continental crust, with a fine rock record back through three billion years of geological time. This history would have been interesting enough if it had been played out on relatively stable continental crust. However, Britain and Ireland have developed at a tectonic crossroads, on crust once traversed by subduction zones and volcanic arcs, continental rifts and mountain belts. The resulting complexity is instructive, fascinating and perplexing. Geological History of Britain and Ireland tells the region's story at a level accessible to undergraduate geologists, as well as to postgraduates, professionals or informed amateurs. This second edition is fully revised and updated, reflecting our continually developing knowledge of the region's geology. Full coverage is again given to the rich Precambrian and Early Palaeozoic history, as well as to later events more relevant to hydrocarbon exploration. The book is an essential starting point for more detailed studies of the regional geology. Additional resources for this book can be found at: http://www.wiley.com/go/woodcock/geologicalhistory

Book Manual of the Geology of Ireland

Download or read book Manual of the Geology of Ireland written by G. Henry Kinahan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the Geology of Ireland In his Explanation to his exhaustive list of the Irish Carboniferous Fossils, that able and veteran Irish Geologist, Sir Richard J. Griffith, Bart., states that it had always been his intention to publish a Geology of Ireland, but that his official duties pressed so heavily on him, that the time to accomplish the task was never at his disposal. Under these circumstances I have, therefore, been induced to attempt it. I have not relied solely upon my own personal knowledge of the country, but have consulted all public and private records and papers relating to the Geology of Ireland to which I could get access. First and most important in the list are the invaluable maps and writings of Sir R. J. Griffith. I would here allude to the personal obligations I am under to that gentleman, as, since I first knew him, nearly a quarter of a century ago, he has never refused an opportunity of enlightening me on the entangled and obscure points of Irish Geology, and of directing my attention to those points still to be worked out. Next in importance are Jukes's maps and writings. Of these I have availed myself largely; whilst in regard to the Geology of the North of Ireland, Portlock's maps and publications have been extensively used and quoted. The relative ages and mode of formation of its moun tains, the origin of its Central Plain, of its river valleys, and of its numerous lakes; its volcanic pheno mena, the evidences of extensive glaciation at a for mer period exhibited by its rock-surfaces, its eskers and extensive moorlands - all these will repay careful study, and will form the subject of the following pages. Book excerpt: 'Unearthed: impacts of the Tellus surveys of the north of Ireland details how this unprecedented land and air survey of hidden Ireland rewards us with a more complete understanding of the natural history of this region. It tells an epic story of how Ireland's geological past will sustain its future'. Professor Iain Stewart MBEBetween 2004 and 2013, e15 million of government and EU funding was spent on high-resolution, airborne geophysical and geochemical sampling surveys of Northern Ireland and the six northern counties of the Republic of Ireland. This book presents some of the findings of the first two stages of Tellus, the largest collaborative cross-border programme of geoscience surveys ever undertaken on the island of Ireland. Tellus is a concerted cross-border investment in the terrestrial geosciences, intended both to stimulate exploration for natural resources and to generate essential data for environmental management. A huge volume of geoscientific data has already been produced and analysed by researchers in Ireland, the UK and beyond. In this book, scientists who have worked with the Tellus data reflect on the outputs and impacts in terms of the economy, the environment, energy, agriculture and ecology.

Book excerpt: Ireland contains some of the most impressive and unspoilt scenery in western Europe. From the conical white quartzite mountains of Donegal in the north, to the ragged clutching fingers of the Skellig Rocks in the south, the constant changes of light and shade alter these vistas moment by moment. This country was forged on the anvil of time in a way which reflects the constantly changing patterns and configurations in the history of the planet.
