Download or read book The Works of Robert G Ingersoll Vol XII in 12 Volumes written by Robert G. Ingersoll and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As outspoken in his day as Richard Dawkins or Christopher Hitchens are today, ROBERT GREEN INGERSOLL (1833-1899) was a notorious radical whose uncompromising views on religion and slavery (they were bad, in his opinion), women's suffrage (a good idea, he believed), and other contentious matters of his era made him a wildly popular orator and critic of American culture and public life. Legendary as a speaker-he memorized his speeches and could talk for hours without notes-and as a proponent of freethought, Ingersoll is an American original whose words still ring with truth and power today. His most important works are gathered in this 12-volume collected edition, first published posthumously in 1901. Volume XII features a series of miscellaneous works: [ essays on modern thinkers, the brain and the Bible, agnosticism, and more [ a variety of short dinner speeches and addresses [ "The Religion of Abraham Lincoln" [ thoughts on superstition, liberty, joy, and youth and age [ "The Lowest Phase of Religion" [ Ingersoll's letters [ and more Volume XII also includes the complete index for the full 12-volume set.

This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Special Issue on Being Faithful to God in the Era of Trump What does it look like to live as citizens under God's reign and as seekers of God's justice in today's world? Donald Trump was inaugurated as the US president on January 20, 2017. Whenever there is a new person in that position, it is good for followers of Jesus Christ to pause and reflect under the light of Scripture regarding not only the new president's policies but also our own responsibilities as the people of God. This issue of the Journal of Latin American Theology is our invitation to pursue that hard work of reflection and action. The resounding message is that Christians today need to express a faithful public witness that Jesus Christ is Lord. The articles herein discuss certain facets of such faithfulness: what it means to be the people of God, just stewardship of money in light of international trade agreements, living simply and working hard to care for the planet God has entrusted to us, Christ-centered as opposed to fear-based relations between native-born and foreigners, understanding and acting upon the biblical connection between shalom and justice, and responding carefully to those who face scarcity in the land of plenty. May our readers be equipped to live as more faithful representatives of God's all-encompassing reign.

Download or read book The Fate of Labour Socialism written by James Naylor and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost a century before the New Democratic Party rode the first “orange wave,” their predecessors imagined a movement that could rally Canadians against economic insecurity, win access to necessary services such as health care, and confront the threat of war. The party they built during the Great Depression, the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), permanently transformed the country’s politics. Past histories have described the CCF as social democrats guided by middle-class intellectuals, a party which shied away from labour radicalism and communist agitation. James Naylor’s assiduous research tells a very different story: a CCF created by working-class activists steeped in Marxist ideology who sought to create a movement that would be both loyal to its socialist principles and appealing to the wider electorate. The Fate of Labour Socialism is a fundamental reexamination of the CCF and Canadian working-class politics in the 1930s, one that will help historians better understand Canada’s political, intellectual, and labour history.
