Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Missions: Their Relations and Claims The work now offered to the Christian public had its origin in a series of Lectures on Foreign Missions, delivered in the Theological Seminary at Andover, under appointment from the Trus tees; and subsequently, by request, before the Theological Seminaries at Bangor, Hartford, Auburn, and Princeton, and the Union Semi nary in New York City. It was fitting that the oldest of our theological seminaries, and the first to send missionaries into foreign heathen lands, should take the lead in establishing, for its students, a permanent Lectureship on For eign Missions. This was created by a vote of the Trustees early in the year 1866; and the needful pecuniary endowment was secured to the Seminary by henry H. Hyde, Esq, a citizen of Boston. The statutes of the endowment re quire the course to embrace as many as ten lectures; but it is left for the Trustees to de cide, whether they shall be delivered annually. The Church was slow to realize its full mission, but gradually the splendid conception of a world-con quering gospel became clearer. Today the foreign missionary enterprise is the vastest work of the Church, as the facts that are given on other pages. Abundantly prove. How can local churches train, send, and support missionaries well? Unpacking principles from the Bible and applying them in the context of real life in a local church, this new book in the 9Marks: Building Healthy Churches series is filled with practical steps and advice for supporting missionaries, forming international partnerships, sending short-term teams, and engaging with the nations here at home. This book casts a vision for the local church as the engine of world missions—for the joy of all people and the glory of God.

Book Four Views on the Church s Mission

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the Church's mission? What does it mean to participate in God's mission personally? How do "mission" and culture interact and conflict? This book articulates various evangelical views regarding the church's mission and provides a healthy, vigorous, and gracious debate on this controversial topic. In a helpful Counterpoints format, this volume demonstrates the unique theological frameworks, doctrinal convictions, and missiological conclusions that inform and distinguish the views: Soteriological Mission: Jonathan Leeman Participatory Mission: Christopher Wright Contextual Mission: John Franke Ecumenical-Political Mission: Peter Leithart Each contributor answers the same key questions based on their biblical interpretations and theological convictions: What is your biblical-theological framework for mission? How does your definition of mission inform your understanding of the church's mission? How does the Mission of God and Kingdom of God relate to the mission of the church? What is the gospel? How does your view on the gospel inform the mission of the church? How do verbal proclamation of the gospel, discipleship, corporate worship, caring for the poor, social justice, restoring shalom, developing culture, and international missions fit into the church's mission? The interactive format helps readers get a clearer picture of why different conclusions are drawn and provide a fresh starting point for discussion and debate of the church's mission. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Book Participating in God s Mission

Download or read book Participating in God s Mission written by Craig Van Gelder and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores how the church has engaged—and should engage—the American context What might faithful and meaningful Christian witness look like within our changing contemporary American context? After analyzing contemporary challenges and developing a missiological approach for the US church, Craig Van Gelder and Dwight Zscheile reflect on the long, complex, and contested history of Christian mission in America. Five distinct historical periods from the beginning of the colonial era to the dawn of the third millennium are reviewed and critiqued. They then bring the story forward to the present day, discussing current realities confronting the church, discerning possibilities of where and how the Spirit of God might be at work today, and imagining what participating in the triune God’s mission may look like in an uncertain tomorrow.
