Book excerpt: Bath has a small number of people, and a considerable share of this small number is a new element. To many individuals of the latter class a history of the county will appeal very little. For the above reasons we confine ourselves to a presentation of the more striking and important features in the story of this county. But if, in a commercial sense, this county seemed only a moderately promising field for a local history, it remains very true that Bath is one of the best known counties of the Old Dominion. It is one of the older counties in the Alleghany belt, and it lies on a natural highway of travel and commerce. The story of its evolution is one of much interest. -- Foreword.

Book excerpt: Named for its restorative mineral springs, Bath County has been a popular tourist destination since the mid-18th Century. Visitors, and those who call it home, are charmed by its bucolic beauty-rolling meadows, pristine rivers, and ancient, cozy mountains. Experience day-to-day life, as well as the allure of the springs and their adjacent grand hotels, by leafing through the past in this volume of 200 photographs, many never before published. Visit "The Hot," "The Warm," "The Healing," Bath Alum and Millboro Springs as they once were. See the gentry who paid small fortunes to "take the waters," and the generations who served them with grace. Our breathtaking views may seem to have changed little through the years; these photos show just how different the view over Warm Springs Gap was a century ago, just how Hot Springs appeared when Main Street was barely more than a flower-filled field. Bath's proud, independent, industrious population is shown at work and play, at school and church, at home on the porch. Fabled, long-gone faces once again come into focus, while those still enjoying life here today are captured in childhood, or the glow of youth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The citizens of Washington County, Virginia gave up their sons and daughters to the Confederate cause of the Civil War. Contributing six Confederate generals as well as Union officers, the region is emblematic of communities throughout the nation that sacrificed during the war. Though the sounds of cannon fire and gunshots were only heard at a distance, Washington County was the breadbasket for Confederate armies. From the fields surrounding Abingdon to the coveted salt works in Saltville, Union Generals were constantly eyeing the region, resulting in the Saltville Massacre and the burning of Abingdon's famous courthouse. Historian Michael Shaffer gives a detailed narrative of Washington County during the Civil War, painting vivid images of heroism on and off the battlefield.

Download or read book 1870 Census of Bath County Virginia written by and published by . This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first census after the Civil War and the disease epidemics of the 1860s, many families in Bath county appear reduced by war and illness, but even more families were rebuilt - widows remarried and new children born. New immigrants had arrived from other Virginia counties & from Ireland to work on the railroad, and, for the first time, we see a listing of the ex-slave population of the county. Information includes: name, gender, age, race, occupation, birthplace, value of property owned, disabilities, school attendance, married within the year, twins, etc. This census taker even listed birth counties rather than just the required state. Illegible names have been checked against earlier and later censuses and other records for verification. Includes footnotes to clarify anomalies in the census, and index of heads-of-household & persons in the house with a different surname.

Book excerpt: The northern part of Loudoun County was a Unionist enclave in Confederate Virginia that remained a contested battleground for armies and factions of all stripes throughout the Civil War. Lying between the Blue Ridge Mountains, Harpers Ferry, and Washington, D.C., the Loudoun Valley provided a natural corridor for commanders on both sides, while its mountainous fringes were home to partisans, guerillas, deserters and smugglers. This detailed history examines the conflicting loyalties in the farming communities, the peaceful Quakers caught in the middle, and the political underpinnings of Unionist Virginia.
