Book excerpt: All for the Union is the eloquent and moving diary of Elisha Hunt Rhodes, featured throughout Ken Burns' PBS documentary The Civil War. Rhodes enlisted into the Union Army as a private in 1861 and left it four years later as a twenty-three-year-old colonel after fighting hard and honorably in battles from Bull Run to Appomattox. Anyone who heard these diaries excerpted in The Civil War will recognize his accounts of those campaigns, which remain outstanding for their clarity and detail. Most of all, Rhodes's words reveal the motivation of a common Yankee foot soldier, an otherwise ordinary young man who endured the rigors of combat and exhausting marches, short rations, fear, and homesickness for a salary of $13 a month and the satisfaction of giving "all for the union."

This book was released on 2018-11-24 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two months after the attack at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, 18-year-old George W. Gardner enlisted in the 35th Regiment New York State Volunteers. A few months after that, his father, Ebenezer, enlisted in the same regiment. What they did not know was what awaited them: a Union Army of the Potomac struggling to defend its capitol, suffering defeat and losses at the hands of a well-trained rebel Confederate Army. Year 1862 would find the father and son and their comrades on their heels, and in retreat most of the time. It would take them to some of the Civil War's most storied and bloodiest battles; Antietam, Bull Run, Fredericksburg, South Mountain - and valiantly protecting Washington's own doorstep. Corporal Gardner's efficient, curt style of writing, documenting his duties during those battles, is enhanced by added historical information in the footnotes. Relevant Civil War photos from the Library of Congress, George Gardner's personal post-war documents and photos, and photographs of excavated relics from the areas mentioned in the diary, give this book a complete "life story" feel.

This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A native of Warren County, Iowa, Cyrus F. Boyd served a year and a half as an orderly sergeant with the Fifteenth Iowa Infantry before becoming first lieutenant in Company B of the Thirty-fourth Iowa Infantry. Before his promotion, he was an intermediary between privates and company officers, a position that offered him unique opportunities to observe the attitudes and activities of both the unit leaders and their men. In this diary, the outspoken Boyd frankly expresses his opinions of his comrades and his commanders, candidly depicts camp life, and intricately details the gory events on the battlefield. Although not always pleasant reading, Boyd's journal is a vibrant, honest chronicle of one man's experiences in the bloody conflict. "There is much to learn from and enjoy about this short but rich account. Boyd fully revealed the sordid reality and the tender moments of his army service." -- Earl J. Hess, from his Introduction

Book excerpt: Written during the civil war from 1862 until 1865, the diary of Private Henry Albert Strong, Company K, Twelfth Kansas Infantry, provides a rare record of the experiences and observations of a Western Federal Infantryman. Strong witnessed the effects of bushwhacking, participated in battles and skirmishes, made long marches, survived disease in camp, and still found ways to handle the boredom of camp life. Strong's writing supports many previously documented facts concerning soldier life while debunking some myths about troops in the West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Follow Civil War Union Army Sergeant, Arthur P. McCullough, of Company "D", 81st Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Embark upon dozens of river steamboats plying the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, Cumberland, Red and White Rivers in search of the rebel armies. Fight alongside the boys in blue at the battles of Port Gibson, Raymond, Jackson, Champion Hill, Big Black River Bridge, Vicksburg, Red River, Brice's Crossroads, and Nashville. Revel at the Mardi Gras in old New Orleans. Sail across the Gulf of Mexico and into Mobile Bay. Drive the rebels out of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely then capture the city of Mobile. Complete the circle by occupying Montgomery, the first capitol of the Confederate States of America. Here is a never before published history showing the bravery, perseverance and strength of a frontline Union Infantry soldier fighting in the western theater of the Civil War. Based on a recently discovered diary written by his great-grand-uncle, the author adds text, maps and illustrations to position the reader at the camp sites and on the battle lines. Then the diarist takes over to transport us back in time to the daily life of a Union soldier fighting to preserve the United States of America. This diary is a primary history source written by Sergeant McCullough over a three year period from 1862 until 1865. His final entry was made three days before he died. This is not a memoir written years after the war. This is as it happened.

Download or read book A Diary of Battle written by Charles Shiels Wainwright and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allan Nevins describes this unique and dramatic journal as "the most comprehensive and historically useful field diary by a Civil War officer that I have seen." Colonel (later Brevet Brigadier General) Wainwright of the 1st Regiment New York Volunteer Light Infantry, Army of the Potomac, kept this diary from the battles of Williamsburg, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville, to Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, Petersburg, and Appomatox. But this is a story, too, of the more ordinary events of war -- picking blackberries in a field, listening to the chirp of early bluebirds, struggling through endless mud, enjoying a rare festive occasion like the Thanksgiving Day dinner of champagne, "green turtle soup a la tin can and Roast Turkey a la 'Hard Tack.'" Wainwright sets down penetrating, and sometimes prejudiced, observations of the commanding generals -- McClellan, Hooker, Burnside, Meade, and Grant; and of those who commanded them -- Stanton ("I do not like his looks") and President Lincoln ("I was ashamed to think that such a gawk was President of the United States"). His journals, culled here and annotated by Allan Nevins from five handwritten volumes, are an important Civil War find.
