Book Power Speed and Form

Download or read book Power Speed and Form written by David P. Billington and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power, Speed, and Form is the first accessible account of the engineering behind eight breakthrough innovations that transformed American life from 1876 to 1939—the telephone, electric power, oil refining, the automobile, the airplane, radio, the long-span steel bridge, and building with reinforced concrete. Beginning with Thomas Edison's system to generate and distribute electric power, the authors explain the Bell telephone, the oil refining processes of William Burton and Eugene Houdry, Henry Ford's Model T car and the response by General Motors, the Wright brothers' airplane, radio innovations from Marconi to Armstrong, Othmar Ammann's George Washington Bridge, the reinforced concrete structures of John Eastwood and Anton Tedesko, and in the 1930s, the Chrysler Airflow car and the Douglas DC-3 airplane. These innovations used simple numerical ideas, which the Billingtons integrate with short narrative accounts of each breakthrough—a unique and effective way to introduce engineering and how engineers think. The book shows how the best engineering exemplifies efficiency, economy and, where possible, elegance. With Power, Speed, and Form, educators, first-year engineering students, liberal arts students, and general readers now have, for the first time in one volume, an accessible and readable history of engineering achievements that were vital to America's development and that are still the foundations of modern life.

Book Civil Engineering in Context

Download or read book Civil Engineering in Context written by Alan Marshall Muir Wood and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2004 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Alan Muir Wood sits in the pantheon of great civil engineers of the twentieth century. In Civil Engineering in Context, Sir Alan Muir Wood draws from his long career to place as he says 'civil engineering in context'. The book contains many personal reminiscences of his life as an engineer from early days as a wartime marine engineer in the Royal Navy, through his more than 25 year career as a Partner and Senior Partner with Halcrow and as a tunnelling engineer of world renown. Civil Engineering in Context also presents Sir Alan's strongly held and sometimes controversial views on how civil engineering as an industry has developed since the pragmatic enterprise of the nineteenth century, through a twentieth century where much of the momentum was lost, and how it should be developing in the twenty-first century. Sir Alan ranges across many topics which directly affect the role of the engineer, including management and the law, systems and design, and ethics and politics. He also discusses his contribution and the wider aspects to some of the major projects of the twentieth century such as the Channel Tunnel. Civil Engineering in Context provides an enlightening insight into the civil engineer and civil engineering through the eyes of one of it most eminent protagonists.

Book John Frank Stevens

Download or read book John Frank Stevens written by Clifford Foust and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of America's foremost civil engineers of the past 150 years, John Frank Stevens was a railway reconnaissance and location engineer whose reputation was made on the Canadian Pacific and Great Northern lines. Self-taught and driven by a bulldog tenacity of purpose, he was hired by Theodore Roosevelt as chief engineer of the Panama Canal, creating a technical achievement far ahead of its time. Stevens also served for more than five years as the head of the US Advisory Commission of Railway Experts to Russia and as a consultant who contributed to many engineering feats, including the control of the Mississippi River after the disastrous floods of 1927 and construction of the Boulder (Hoover) Dam. Drawing on Stevens's surviving personal papers and materials from projects with which he was associated, Clifford Foust offers an illuminating look into the life of an accomplished civil engineer.

Book Reminiscences of an Old English Civil Engineer 1858 1908 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reminiscences of an Old English Civil Engineer 1858 1908 Classic Reprint written by Robert Maitland Brereton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of an Old English Civil Engineer, 1858-1908 Half a century of active and continuous employment in the various fields of civil engineering in parts of the world-wide British Empire and in the United States of North America may contain matters of interest to my old and young friends wheresoever they be. The twentieth and thirty-first of January, 1908, were two fiftieth anniversaries in my professional career. The latter date recalled the launching of the Great Eastern steamship at Mill Wall, on the Thames. I believe I am the only living engineer who had been employed by Mr. I. K. Brunel, her designer and builder, in his oflice, and witnessed her construction during 1854-5. I was not a witness of the launching ceremony in 1858, as I was then in India, engaged in the survey and staking out of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, which was to connect Bombay with Calcutta and Madras. C'yrus Field told me in 1871, in New York, that if he had not had the fortunate opportunity to charter this gigantic vessel for the laying of his perfected cable on the bed of the Atlantic Ocean in 1865-6, he could not have made such a success of it. We should realize that the laying of this cable was the most important international link and economic event between England and North America since the first discovery of America by John and Sebastian Cabot in 1497-8. England on this fiftieth anniversary had the opportunity of recalling to mind the great name and master - genius of one of her most famous civil engineers, who had during the first half of the last century designed and built the largest steam vessels - the Great Britain and the Great Western - for international commerce across the Atlantic Ocean. He, too, had had the foresight to realize the fact that growing population and increase of commerce in the future would require a broader width of gauge for railways than the ordi nary old wagon gauge of England. Book Continuum Mechanics Through the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Continuum Mechanics Through the Twentieth Century written by Gerard A Maugin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-08 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This overview of the development of continuum mechanics throughout the twentieth century is unique and ambitious. Utilizing a historical perspective, it combines an exposition on the technical progress made in the field and a marked interest in the role played by remarkable individuals and scientific schools and institutions on a rapidly evolving social background. It underlines the newly raised technical questions and their answers, and the ongoing reflections on the bases of continuum mechanics associated, or in competition, with other branches of the physical sciences, including thermodynamics. The emphasis is placed on the development of a more realistic modeling of deformable solids and the exploitation of new mathematical tools. The book presents a balanced appraisal of advances made in various parts of the world. The author contributes his technical expertise, personal recollections, and international experience to this general overview, which is very informative albeit concise.
