When the Publicity and Historical Committee was authorized by the Victory Jubilee and Memorial Committee to compile this history the Government was asked for an official list of the heroic dead of Camden county. The War Department replied that it was a physicial impossibility for their bureaus to furnish such information because of the great number of men in service of the nation. The members of the committee, with the aid of the police, secured the information for their records by visiting the homes of those who died in the war and having their relatives fill out questionnaires printed byithe Victory Jubilee and Memorial Committee. Book Camden After the Fall

Download or read book Camden After the Fall written by Howard Gillette, Jr. and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-06-03 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What prevents cities whose economies have been devastated by the flight of human and monetary capital from returning to self-sufficiency? Looking at the cumulative effects of urban decline in the classic post-industrial city of Camden, New Jersey, historian Howard Gillette, Jr., probes the interaction of politics, economic restructuring, and racial bias to evaluate contemporary efforts at revitalization. In a sweeping analysis, Gillette identifies a number of related factors to explain this phenomenon, including the corrosive effects of concentrated poverty, environmental injustice, and a political bias that favors suburban amenity over urban reconstruction. Challenging popular perceptions that poor people are responsible for the untenable living conditions in which they find themselves, Gillette reveals how the effects of political decisions made over the past half century have combined with structural inequities to sustain and prolong a city's impoverishment. Even the most admirable efforts to rebuild neighborhoods through community development and the reinvention of downtowns as tourist destinations are inadequate solutions, Gillette argues. He maintains that only a concerted regional planning response—in which a city and suburbs cooperate—is capable of achieving true revitalization. Though such a response is mandated in Camden as part of an unprecedented state intervention, its success is still not assured, given the legacy of outside antagonism to the city and its residents. Deeply researched and forcefully argued, Camden After the Fall chronicles the history of the post-industrial American city and points toward a sustained urban revitalization strategy for the twenty-first century.

Book History of Camden and Rockport Maine Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Camden and Rockport Maine The old town of Camden, which includes the present towns of Camden and Rockport, has a most interesting history, to pre serve which is the object of this volume. Mr. Locke's excellent Sketches of the History of Camden has long been out of print, and but a few copies are now extant. That work was published nearly half a century ago, and many important events, happen ing since its publication, would have become lost to future genera tions unless someone had undertaken the task of compiling a new history. As no one else seemed inclined to enter upon the undertaking the writer essayed the arduous and somewhat delicate work of putting into print the deeds and lives of the Camden and Rockport people from the earliest period to the present time. This work is essentially a home made production, as the author is a citizen of Camden, it was printed by the Camden Publishing Company and bound by Mr. Edwin F. Dillingham of Bangor, who is a member of an old Camden family and one of Camden's oldest and most loyal summer residents. J: Including a Brief Review of the Charitable Institutions Within the County In presenting this work to the public, the author desires to state that the utmost pains have been taken to insure its accuracy. In addition to the references given in the foot-notes of the work, indebtedness is here acknowledged to the personal records that have been furnished him and to the minutes, published transactions and reports of the societies, associations, orders and institutions considered; but the incompleteness of some of these is, however, a matter of regret. Next to the consecutive history of professional matters within Camden county, and of the kindred professions of pharmacy and dentistry, the social, educational, political and military relationship of the medical fraternity to the City and County of Camden, the State of New Jersey and to the Government of the United States, has been carefully presented. This volume was prepared while the author was engaged in arduous professional duties, and it is his hope that its reader will derive as much pleasure from its perusal as it has afforded him in its preparation. J Ruskin asserts that all the pure and noble arts of peace are founded on war, and that it is the foundation of all the high virtues and faculties Of man. This may or may not be true, but it may fairly be said that all great results proceed from contest and struggle and it may as fairly be said that to contest and struggle, not Of deeds of arms, but for the maintenance Of rights, may we trace the begin ning of our city. Though this be true, still its inception was as peaceful as is the bosom of the river which flows past its door. Book Sketches of the History of the Town of Camden Maine

Download or read book Sketches of the History of the Town of Camden Maine written by John L. Locke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of the History of the Town of Camden, Maine: Including Incidental References to the Neighboring Places and Adjacent Waters The early portion of these Sketches, originally appeared in the columns of a local press, * but upon the advice 01 others, whose opinions the writer regarded, it was decided to change, and enlarge the scope of the design, and issue the result in a more permanent form. In order to make his work reliable, the writer has avail ed himself of the advantages of the principal public libra ries, and State archives of Maine and Massachusetts; had access to many private collections of books, papers, and documents; consulted town, and society records, and ex amined every available source of written information within his reach. Besides the facts derived from the above sources. He has obtained a large amount of traditional knowledge from the lips of aged sires, some of whom have since de ceased, and from persons of younger years. It will at once be perceived that the task of collating, and reconciling the conflicting statements of written authority, with those of oblivious octogenarians, has been no easy one, and, like that of deciphering obscure writing, has required much patience, and some perseverance. Undoubtedly, mistakes will be detected, but it will be found that they are such as will naturally occur in a work of the kind, where so many distinct facts and dates are involved.
