Book The City That Waits To Die

Download or read book The City That Waits To Die written by JL Walters and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The City That Waits To Die is a historic fiction account of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and its impact on to intertwined fictional families, the McCurrens and the Pritchards. Since the California Gold Rush, they have shared a bond begun by the fellowship of their patriarchs, Finney McCurren and Lucas Pritchard. The story tells of the McCurren and Pritchard actions and impressions of their ravaged world during a twenty-four hour period centered upon the 1906 earthquake. There is fire, peril, and missing family and friends, a train depot explosion and a hurried trek to San Francisco on stolen horseback. I was hungry for authentic detail and poured over as many resources as I could find, attempting to make The City That Waits To Die richer, to make it real. In addition to residing in San Francisco for ten years and still visiting regularly, I spent two years researching the 1906 details of San Francisco.

Book excerpt: What happens when put-upon prostitutes and workhouse inmates take revenge, or when a royal corpse goes walkabout? Why do the dead call to us, and who are they anyway? These twelve stories, written by a life-long Londoner, introduce us to the dead of London. We hear their voices, and through them we understand our place within the ongoing narrative of history. Just as we remember them, so one day we will be remembered. The author draws on London's folk history, each story being based on a place or institution which has been part of the local history he has learned since childhood. As such, each one bears a ring of authenticity, both in its historical detail and in its place in London's story.

Book The Many Lives of Tom Waits

Download or read book The Many Lives of Tom Waits written by Patrick Humphries and published by Omnibus Press. This book was released on 2009-12-17 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This full length biography is the first comprehensive account of a truly legendary artist. It covers every aspect of the life and career of a man who has never seemed to be in the slightest danger of losing his credibility to mainstream success. With twenty albums to his credit and a legion of passionate fans, the uncompromising Waits continues to conjure up tender, ragged and magical songs that have attracted cover versions by artists as esteemed as Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart, The Eagles, Elvis Costello, Meat Loaf, The Ramones and Johnny Cash. Abrasive and single-minded, the gravel voiced singer/songwriter and occasional movie actor has followed one of the most unlikely career paths in popular music. Patrick Humphries' biography finally does this unique character justice with an in-depth critical overview of his life and work supplemented with authoritative discography and filmography.

Book Marginalisation and Utopia in Paul Auster Jim Jarmusch and Tom Waits

Download or read book Marginalisation and Utopia in Paul Auster Jim Jarmusch and Tom Waits written by Adriano A. Tedde and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how three contemporary American artists through the mediums of film, literature and popular music have contributed to the tradition of American progressivism, and provides an invaluable companion to the understanding of complex issues such as inequality and social and economic decline that are apparent in America today. Connecting the works of these artists through a fictional country – the ‘Other America’ – the book shows how they have refuted middle-class values and goals of success, money and social affirmation to unveil the less celebrated, dark side of contemporary America, which, despite the troubles currently faced, never loses hope for a better future. This utopic vision in the face of adversity is explored through the plots, characters and mis-en-scène of Auster and Jarmusch’s work and Waits’s lyrics and sound. This vision challenges the dominant narratives of America as the land of opportunity and values democracy, civic engagement, communitarianism and egalitarianism. Offering an important new perspective to literature on contemporary American culture, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of American studies, film studies, popular music, postmodern literature, cultural studies and sociology.
