Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "India retains one of the richest painting traditions in the history of global visual culture, one that both parallels aspects of European traditions and also diverges from it. While European artists venerated the landscape and landscape paintings, it is rare in the Indian tradition to find depictions of landscapes for their sheer beauty and mood, without religious or courtly significance. There is one glorious exception: Painters from the city of Udaipur in Northwestern India specialized in depicting places, including the courtly worlds and cities of rajas, sacred landscapes of many gods, and bazaars bustling with merchants, pilgrims, and craftsmen. Their court paintings and painted invitation scrolls displayed rich geographic information, notions of territory, and the bhāva, or feel, emotion, and mood of a place. This is the first book to use artistic representations of place to trace the major aesthetic, intellectual, and political shifts in South Asia over the long eighteenth century. While James Tod, the first British colonial agent based in Udaipur, established the region's reputation as a principality in a state of political and cultural deterioration, author Dipti Khera uses these paintings to suggest a counter-narrative of a prosperous region with beautiful and bountiful cities, and plentiful rains and lakes. She explores the perspectives of courtly communities, merchants, pilgrims, monks, laypeople, and officers, and the British East India Company's officers, explorers, and artists. Throughout, she draws new conclusions about the region's intellectual and artistic practices, and its shifts in political authority, mobility, and urbanity"--

Book Divine Gesture

Download or read book Divine Gesture written by Alka Pande and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Divine Gesture: The Magnificence of Mewar Spirituality is undoubtedly an important art historical document. The book serves as a catalogue for the 308 sculptures that are a part of the collections of the Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation (MMCF), Udaipur. What makes this book unique is the fact that there is perhaps no gallery or catalogue that documents an unbroken tradition of sculptures, from the 7th century CE to the 20th century CE, from a specific region. The sculptures present a 'particular' depiction of the magnificence and spirituality of Mewar, drawing from the larger metanarrative of Rajasthan's grand temple-building tradition. The singular iconography and the distinct stylistic and thematic content of the sculptures has been well explored and researched. The bouquet of five distinct essays presents a diverse range of scholarship, with each author bringing a fresh perspective to the art history of the region. The authors have narrated perspectives of art history, iconography, thematics, the very act of temple-building and custodianship. The readers, it is hoped, will be more informed about the region's rich history and its honest sharing of heritage. The book is a tribute to Mewar's sculptures which, till recent times, were relatively unknown and not acknowledged for their grandeur."--

Book Raj Rhapsodies Tourism Heritage and the Seduction of History

Download or read book Raj Rhapsodies Tourism Heritage and the Seduction of History written by Maxine Weisgrau and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heritage is a prized cultural commodity in the marketing of tourism destinations. Particular aspects of heritage are often more actively promoted, with others played down. The representation of heritage in tourism as static and timeless, derived since time immemorial from a distant past, is seductive. In Asia, a major part of the tourism market lies in the sale and consumption of highly orientalized images and versions of culture and history. In India’s marketing discourse, the state of Rajasthan symbolizes the nation in its heritage-laden, traditional and most authentic form. These images draw heavily on the British period in India - the Raj. In one sense, this vision of Rajasthan is ennobling, highlighting moments of cultural pride. In another sense, it demeans, by omitting and obscuring salient features of contemporary life. This fascinating book explores the cultural politics of tourism through interdisciplinary perspectives. Carol E. Henderson and Maxine Weisgrau demonstrate that tourism heritage privileges elite histories that recapitulate colonial relationships, compelling non-elites to collude in these narratives of subordination even as they advance their own alternative visions of history.
