Book excerpt: Excerpt from The City of the Golden Gate: A Description of San Francisco in 1875 Marvelous has been the growth of San Francisco. Its story reads like a chapter from the "Arabian Nights." Yesterday a dreary waste of sand - today a city of a quarter of a million souls, with an aggregate wealth of five hundred millions. The men who laid its foundations - who were present at its birth and christening - are hardly past the prime of life. Never was there a more unsightly spot for a city. • Author : Elizabeth Kelly Gray

Download or read book Habit Forming written by Elizabeth Kelly Gray and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-16 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Habitual drug use in the United States is at least as old as the nation itself. Habit Forming traces the history of unregulated drug use and dependency before 1914, when the Harrison Narcotic Tax Act limited sales of opiates and cocaine under US law. Many Americans used opiates and other drugs medically and became addicted. Some tried Hasheesh Candy, injected morphine, or visited opium dens, but neither use nor addiction was linked to crime, due to the dearth of restrictive laws. After the Civil War, American presses published extensively about domestic addiction. Later in the nineteenth century, many used cocaine and heroin as medicine. As addiction became a major public health issue, commentators typically sympathized with white, middle-class drug users, while criticizing such use by poor or working-class people and people of color. When habituation was associated with middle-class morphine users, few advocated for restricted drug access. By the 1910s, as use was increasingly associated with poor young men, support for regulations increased. In outlawing users' access to habit-forming drugs at the national level, a public health problem became a larger legal and social problem, one with an enduring influence on American drug laws and their enforcement.

Book Consuming Tradition Manufacturing Heritage

Download or read book Consuming Tradition Manufacturing Heritage written by Nezar Alsayyad and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Grand Tour to today's packages holidays, the last two centuries have witnessed an exponential growth in travel and tourism and, as the twenty-first century unfolds, people of every class and from every country will be wandering to every part of the planet. Meanwhile tourist destinations throughout the world find themselves in ever more fierce competition - those places marginalized in today's global industrial and information economy perceiving tourism as perhaps the only means of surviving. But mass tourism has raised the local and international passions as people decry the irreversible destruction of traditional places and historic sites. Against these trends and at a time when standardized products and services are marketed worldwide, there is an increasing demand for built environments that promise unique cultural experiences. This has led many nations and groups to engage in the parallel processes of facilitating the consumption of tradition and of manufacturing tradition. The contributors to this volume - drawn from a wide range of disciplines - address these themes within the following sections: Traditions and Tourism: Rethinking the "Other"; Imaging and Manufacturing Heritage; Manufacturing and Consuming: Global and Local. Their studies, dealing with very different times, environments and geographic locales, will shed new light on how tourist 'gaze' transforms the reality of built spaces into cultural imagery.

Book By the Golden Gate Or San Francisco

Download or read book By the Golden Gate Or San Francisco written by Joseph Carey and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By the Golden Gate or San Francisco: The Queen City of the Pacific Coast, With Scenes and Incidents Characteristic of Its Life This work now offered to the public owes its origin largely to the following circumstance: On the return of the author from California and the city of Mexico, in November, 1901, his friend, the Rev. John N. Marvin, President of the Diocesan Press, asked him to contribute some articles to the Diocese of Albany. From these "sketches" of San Francisco this book has taken form. There are chapters in the volume which have not appeared in print hitherto, and such portions as have been already published have been thoroughly revised. Much of the work has been written from copious notes made in San Francisco, and impressions received there naturally give a local colouring to it in its composition.
