Book excerpt: Excerpt from The City of Dreadful Night, and Other Sketches We are all backwoodsmen and barbarians together - we others dwelling beyond the Ditch, in the outer darkness of the Mofussil. There are no such things as Commissioners and heads of departments in the world, and there is only one city in India. Bombay is too green, too pretty, and too stragglesome; and Madras died ever so long ago. Let us take off our hats to Calcutta, the many-sided, the smoky, the magnificent, as we drive in over the Hughli Bridge in the dawn of a still February morning. We have left India behind us at Howrah Station, and now we enter foreign parts. No, not wholly foreign. Say rather too familiar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The City of Dreadful Night The dense smoke hangs low, in the chill of the morning, over an ocean of roofs, and, as the city wakes, there goes up to the smoke a deep, full-throated boom of life and motion and hu manity. For this reason does he who sees Cal outta for the first time hang joyously out of the ticoa-gharm' and sniff the smoke, and turn] his face toward the tumult, saying: This is, at last, some portion of my heritage returned to me. This is a city. There is life here, and there should be all manner of pleasant things for the having, across the river and under the smoke. When Leland, he who wrote the Hans Breitmann Ballads, once desired to know the name of an austere, plug-batted redskin of re pute, his answer, from the lips of a half-breed, was. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet and novelist born in India, which inspired much of his work. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries he was among the UK's most popular writers and was seen as an innovator in the art of the short story, whilst his children's books have become classics. In 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature as the first English-language writer to receive the prize and, at 41, its youngest recipient to date. This collection of vignettes of Calcutta life, which takes its title from the poem by James Thomson (1834-82), was based on Kipling's explorations of the city. The eight individual chapters were originally serialised in the journal Pioneer from 2 March to 9 April 1888, and later collected in From Sea to Sea, Vol II. This edition published by Alex. Grossett & Co, New York, in 1899 includes two full-page illustrations by Charles D Farrand and a photographic portrait of the author.

Book excerpt: VictorianStudies on theWebCritics Choice!Rudyard Kipling: Hell and Heroism is an exploration of two fundamental yet greatly neglected aspects of the author's life and writings: his deep-seated pessimism and his complex creed of heroism. The method of the book is both biographical and critical. Biographically, it traces the roots of Kipling's dark worldview and his search for something to believe in, a way of thinking and acting in defiance of life's hellishness. There matters were more basic to him than any of his social or political opinions, but this the first full-length study devoted to them. Critically, the book takes a fresh and close look at some of Kipling's most important works. The result challenges long established assumptions and amounts to a major reconsideration of novels like Kim and stories like "Mary Postgate" and "The Gardener." Central in these discussions of individual writings is Kipling's concern with the heroic life, but of equal importance is the analysis and evaluation of them as works of art. Avoiding the tangled and special language of some recent literary theory, this will appeal to a wide audience of those interested in Kipling's mind and art.
