Book The City Is served Bartholomew to the American Prison

Download or read book The City Is served Bartholomew to the American Prison written by William Alexander Patterson, 4th and published by Citizens House Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: UC Berkeley English professor Robert Hass - winner the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Awards - has written that "Alex Patterson is a very gifted young writer." ¿The book is about how children, in a heavenly state, begin to know the earthly world. How much of an illusion are both. How our vital instincts create these illusions. How our subjectivity reigns upon our lives. The book is a remarkable piece of art.¿ -- Marian Apostol. Professor, Department of Theoretical Physics, Institute of Atomic Physics, Magurele-Bucharest. July, 2009. ¿This essay is not a term paper on prisons in America. Rather, it is a document of personal disclosure. Mr. Patterson has engaged passionately with his American tradition. This is to the degree of an exceptionality that is remarkably exposed in this work. He has wrestled so intensely with America that he has taken to exile in Europe. This is the second exceptionality remarked here. I write criticism of academic physics, and do it with some flair. But Alex addresses a bigger culture and hierarchy, writing with such passion, poetry and structure as to make the third exceptionality of this work. I think that this all amounts to a ponderance worthy of your time.¿ -- Michael J. Burns. October 30, 2009

Book Dictionary of American Criminal Justice

Download or read book Dictionary of American Criminal Justice written by Dean J. Champion and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1999. The Dictionary of American Criminal Justice is divided into two extensive sections: Part One is a dictionary that applies an interdisciplinary approach to enhance its effectiveness as a one-stop resource in explaining the American criminal justice system. Terms are drawn from such disciplines as criminology, criminal justice, corrections, probation/parole, juvenile justice, and policing. Many definitions are accompanied by examples from the research literature, illustrating how the terms apply in particular contexts. Also included are listings of leading theorists of criminology, a synopsis of their major theoretical contributions, and extracts from their written works. Part Two, providing examples that demonstrate the concepts of the dictionary in action, includes the most recent and significant U.S. Supreme Court cases--an easy-to-read account of the events leading to each case, how the Supreme Court decided the case, and the rationale used in each decision. Students, researchers, and librarians can quickly and easily identify key cases across a broad spectrum of topics by using indexes that list by name and by category. For any researcher wishing to understand the American criminal justice system, the Dictionary of American Criminal Justice is a crucial reference text.

Book Saint Bartholomew s Eve A Tale of the Huguenot Wars

Download or read book Saint Bartholomew s Eve A Tale of the Huguenot Wars written by George Alfred Henty and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is difficult, in these days of religious toleration, to understand why men should, three centuries ago, have flown at each others' throats in the name of the Almighty; still less how, in cold blood, they could have perpetrated hideous massacres of men, women, and children. The Huguenot wars were, however, as much political as religious. Philip of Spain, at that time the most powerful potentate of Europe, desired to add France to the countries where his influence was all powerful; and in the ambitious house of Guise he found ready instruments. For a time the new faith, that had spread with such rapidity in Germany, England, and Holland, made great progress in France, also. But here the reigning family remained Catholic, and the vigorous measures they adopted, to check the growing tide, drove those of the new religion to take up arms in self defence. Although, under the circumstances, the Protestants can hardly be blamed for so doing, there can be little doubt that the first Huguenot war, though the revolt was successful, was the means of France remaining a Catholic country. It gave colour to the assertions of the Guises and their friends that the movement was a political one, and that the Protestants intended to grasp all power, and to overthrow the throne of France. It also afforded an excuse for the cruel persecutions which followed, and rallied to the Catholic cause numbers of those who were, at heart, indifferent to the question of religion, but were Royalists rather than Catholics. The great organization of the Church of Rome laboured among all classes for the destruction of the growing heresy. Every pulpit in France resounded with denunciations of the Huguenots, and passionate appeals were made to the bigotry and fanaticism of the more ignorant classes; so that, while the power of the Huguenots lay in some of the country districts, the mobs of the great towns were everywhere the instruments of the priests.
