Download or read book The Circus Boys in Dixie Land Or Winning the Plaudits of the Sunny South Dodo Press written by Edgar B. P. Darlington and published by . This book was released on 2009-02 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of series of children's books published between 1910-1920 about two boys who run away to join the circus. No call to the heart of the youth of America finds a readier response than the call of the billowing canvas, the big red wagons, the crash of the circus band and the trill of the ringmaster's whistle. It is a call that captures the imagination of old and young alike, and so do the books of this series capture and enthrall the reader, for they were written by one who, besides weilding a master pen, has followed the sawdust trail from coast to coast, who knows the circus people and the sturdy manliness of those who do and dare for the entertainment of millions of circus-goers when the grass is green. Mr. Darlington paints a true picture of circus life.

"Remember the day I did a stunt in front of the circus billboard back home?" "And fell in the ditch, head first? I remember it," and Phil Forrest laughed heartily. "You and I weren't circus men then, were we?" "No." "But we are now." "I guess we are," nodded Phil with emphasis. "Still, we have something to learn yet. We are a couple of lucky boys, you and I, Teddy Tucker. Had it not been for Mr. Sparling we might still have been doing chores for our board in Edmeston." "Instead, we are getting our envelopes with sixty dollars apiece in them from the little red ticket wagon every Tuesday morning, eh?" "Just so." "I never thought I'd be able to earn so much money as that in a whole year," reflected Teddy.

But the animal was not quick enough. The boy landed against the broncho with a jolt that nearly knocked the little animal over, while to Phil the impact could not have been much more severe, it seemed to him, had he collided with a locomotive." This is an excerpt from The Circus Boys on the Flying Rings or, Making the Start in the Sawdust Life by Edgar Darlington. Although an Internet search has revealed nothing about the identity of the author Edgar Darlington, his series of five books about the circus were written in the early 1900's. Book excerpt: Gloriana; or, The Revolution of 1900 (1890) is a novel by Lady Florence Dixie. A member of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies, Dixie believed in the emancipation of women through radical cultural and political change. Gloriana; or, The Revolution of 1900, a feminist utopian novel, is the story of a revolutionary hero who defies gender norms and fights for liberation by any means necessary. Gloriana pleads woman’s cause, pleads for her freedom, for the just acknowledgement of her rights. It pleads that her equal humanity with man shall be recognized, and therefor that her claim to share what he has arrogated to himself, shall be considered. Gloriana pleads that in woman’s degradation man shall no longer be debased, that in her elevation he shall be upraised and ennobled.” Following this stirring introduction, Lady Florence Dixie tells the story of Gloriana de Lara, a woman who decides to put an end to patriarchy. Disguising herself as a man named Hector d’Estrange, she attends both Eton and Oxford and is elected a Member of Parliament. Meanwhile, she leads the revolutionary Woman’s Volunteer Company on a campaign of violence against repressive authority. When a plot to reveal her identity is discovered, she is forced to go into hiding or else sacrifice years of painstaking work toward the liberation of women throughout the world. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Lady Florence Dixie’s Gloriana; or, The Revolution of 1900 is a classic of British literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book Negro Musicians and their Music

Download or read book Negro Musicians and their Music written by Maud Cuney-Hare and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In offering this study of Negro music, I do so with the admission that there is no consistent development as found in national schools of music. The Negro, a musical force, through his own distinct racial characteristics has made an artistic contribution which is racial but not yet national. Rather has the influence of musical stylistic traits termed Negro, spread over many nations wherever the colonies of the New World have become homes of Negro people. These expressions in melody and rhythm have been a compelling force in American music Ð tragic and joyful in emotion, pathetic and ludicrous in melody, primitive and barbaric in rhythm. The welding of these expressions has brought about a harmonic effect which is now influencing thoughtful musicians throughout the world. At present there is evidenced a new movement far from academic, which plays an important technical part in the music of this and other lands. The question as to whether there exists a pure Negro art in America is warmly debated. Many Negroes as well as Anglo-Americans admit that the so-called American Negro is no longer an African Negro. Apart from the fusion of blood he has for centuries been moved by the same stimuli which have affected all citizens of the United States. They argue rightly that he is a product of a vital American civilization with all its daring, its progress, its ruthlessness, and unlovely speed. As an integral part of the nation, the Negro is influenced by like social environment and governed by the same political institutions; thus page vi we may expect the ultimate result of his musical endeavors to be an art-music which embodies national characteristics exercised upon by his soul's expression. In the field of composition, the early sporadic efforts by people of African descent, while not without historic importance, have been succeeded by contributions from a rising group of talented composers of color who are beginning to find a listening public. The tendency of this music is toward the development of an American symphonic, operatic and ballet school led for the moment by a few lone Negro musicians of vision and high ideals. The story of those working toward this end is herein treated. Facts for this volume have been obtained from educated African scholars with whom the author sought acquaintanceship and from printed sources found in the Boston Public Library, the New York Public Library and the Music Division of the Library of Congress. The author has also had access to rare collections and private libraries which include her own. Folk material has been gathered in personal travel.
