Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Circuit Rider's Sketch Book Dear Brother John Kilgo: It has been a decade and two years since you have met with your brethren in this State as a member of the South Carolina Conference. Many then who did delight to meet and greet you have gone from us, and have been transferred forever. It might afford you a melancholy pleasure to have the long sad roll recalled, and have brought to mind the lofty characters and noble bearings of the fallen braves who it seems but yesterday talked and walked among us. But such is life. We are here to act our parts on the world's stage of action in the drama of life with its sunshine and shadows for a while, then the final act is played, and the closing scene - and we make exit forever. Let us hastily review the list and call the roll of those who were hearty and happy just twelve years ago, but upon whose graves today the autumn leaves are silently falling. First, R. N. Wells, who died in his prime. How easily his face and suavity of manner can be recalled. Franks, Seale, Laird, Pritchard, Jno. A. Mood - all elderly men who died in the faith. Book The Supernatural and the Circuit Riders

Download or read book The Supernatural and the Circuit Riders written by Rimi Xhemajli and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Supernatural and the Circuit Riders, Rimi Xhemajli shows how a small but passionate movement grew and shook the religious world through astonishing signs and wonders. Beginning in the late eighteenth century, early American Methodist preachers, known as circuit riders, were appointed to evangelize the American frontier by presenting an experiential gospel: one that featured extraordinary phenomena that originated from God’s Spirit. In employing this evangelistic strategy of the gospel message fueled by supernatural displays, Methodism rapidly expanded. Despite beginning with only ten official circuit riders in the early 1770s, by the early 1830s, circuit riders had multiplied and caused Methodism to become the largest American denomination of its day. In investigating the significance of the supernatural in the circuit rider ministry, Xhemajli provides a new historical perspective through his eye-opening demonstration of the correlation between the supernatural and the explosive membership growth of early American Methodism, which fueled the Second Great Awakening. In doing so, he also prompts the consideration of the relevance and reproduction of such acts in the American church today.

Book From Social Movement to Moral Market

Download or read book From Social Movement to Moral Market written by Paul-Brian McInerney and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In From Social Movement to Moral Market, Paul-Brian McInerney explores what happens when a movement of activists gives way to a market for entrepreneurs. This book explains the transition by tracing the brief and colorful history of the Circuit Riders, a group of activists who sought to lead nonprofits across the digital divide. In a single decade, this movement spawned a market for technology assistance providers, dedicated to serving nonprofit organizations. In contrast to the Circuit Riders' grassroots approach, which was rooted in their commitment to a cause, these consultancies sprung up as social enterprises, blending the values of the nonprofit sector with the economic principles of for-profit businesses. Through a historical-institutional analysis, this narrative shows how the values of a movement remain intact even as entrepreneurs displace activists. While the Circuit Riders serve as a rich core example in the book, McInerney's findings speak to similar processes in other "moral markets," such as organic food, exploring how the evolution from movement to market impacts activists and enterprises alike.

And so she hires herself out as the circuit rider's gun hand, protecting him along the treacherous trail from Missouri westward. Book Riders of the Cosmic Circuit

Download or read book Riders of the Cosmic Circuit written by Tal Brooke and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-01-21 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Riders of the Cosmic Circuit" are those who emerge from that rare explosion into superconsciousness called enlightenment, an exalted state attained by a mere fraction down the ages. Family and friends no longer recognize them, as they have changed on a fundamental level. Claiming Godhood, they operate behind an unreadable mask, manipulating those around them who believe their claims to deity. To onlookers they have an unknowable intelligence. If enlightenment is like a black hole in deep space whose event horizon descends into blackness, what measuring stick can the normal mind use to judge those who claim to be enlightened and "One with God." How can anyone judge those who claim to be as above ordinary human consciousness as it is above the awareness level of the ant? RIDERS OF THE COSMIC CIRCUIT explores this deepest of conundrums. Something seems to possess the human hosts who have willfully abandoned the controls of their souls, wills and minds in this all out quest for Godhood. Is there a dark side to this superconsciousness and does it have motives beyond the reach of most people? Is it capable of deception and evil, and is there a pattern or map we can use to understand this alien terrain? A powerful source suggests that superconsciousness in reality is a state of perfect possession-a figure-ground reversal of all claims to Godhood. Some disturbing patterns emerge as the present quest examines some enigmatic and shrouded aspects of three of the most famous and powerful Riders of our era who have been at work in India and beyond, magnetizing followers and capturing lives.
