Book excerpt: The Cinderella Blues (Thuh Sin'dur-rel'uh Bluze) n. 1. The phenomena whereby otherwise intelligent, capable, successful professional women are convinced they need rescuing by a prince. BOOK LOVERS INC. Kat is dreaming of, not just Mr. Right, but Prince Charming. She's a career woman working her way up the ladder, but she still thinks she wants to be rescued. The Cinderella Blues is all about the frogs she kisses along the way. And not only are they froggy, but swampy and muddy into the bargain. Ribbit! But Kat has a fairy godmother. And some terrific friends to help her along the way. Including to remind her that she doesn't need Prince Charming to rescue her. She's more than capable of rescuing herself. All Kat needs is to get her head out of the clouds and figure out what it is she really wants. She can make her own dreams come true. And if she rescues herself, she'll have a chance at a real happy ending, with a real man, not a fairy-tale prince. But also not a frog. I give The Cinderella Blues 5 stars for doing a terrific job of lamp shading the Cinderella trope, standing it on its head, dancing a jig with it, and still bringing home the happy ending! - Marlene NIGHT OWL REVIEWS TOP PICK! This story is one of the few novels I have ever read that made me laugh out loud, sigh for the dilemmas facing the characters, and overall, made me smile in true happiness. It tells the story of Kat, a thoroughly modern woman with a baking habit, and the joys of life for a single woman in LA looking for success and love in that fierce urban jungle. The story follows Kat through her nearly suffocating job in a highly dysfunctional company, and the joys and heartache of her highly dysfunctional love life and family life. Kat must learn to trust her mind and heart, and that nearly every wannabe Prince Charming often comes with extremely tarnished armor and more baggage than his trusty steed could ever handle. If you couldn't tell, I absolutely loved this novel. It brought me back to a time that the majority of women can identify with; that is, the search for love while trying to be successful in a job and still find time to enjoy the joys of life. The characters are extremely witty and charming, and the story is expertly crafted. This is a novel that women everywhere will love and pass among girlfriends. - Hitherandthee

Book Bitten by the Blues

  • Author : Bruce Iglauer
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2018-10-19
  • ISBN : 022612990X
  • Pages : 346 pages

Download or read book Bitten by the Blues written by Bruce Iglauer and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It started with the searing sound of a slide careening up the neck of an electric guitar. In 1970, twenty-three-year-old Bruce Iglauer walked into Florence’s Lounge, in the heart of Chicago’s South Side, and was overwhelmed by the joyous, raw Chicago blues of Hound Dog Taylor and the HouseRockers. A year later, Iglauer produced Hound Dog’s debut album in eight hours and pressed a thousand copies, the most he could afford. From that one album grew Alligator Records, the largest independent blues record label in the world. Bitten by the Blues is Iglauer’s memoir of a life immersed in the blues—and the business of the blues. No one person was present at the creation of more great contemporary blues music than Iglauer: he produced albums by Koko Taylor, Albert Collins, Professor Longhair, Johnny Winter, Lonnie Mack, Son Seals, Roy Buchanan, Shemekia Copeland, and many other major figures. In this book, Iglauer takes us behind the scenes, offering unforgettable stories of those charismatic musicians and classic sessions, delivering an intimate and unvarnished look at what it’s like to work with the greats of the blues. It’s a vivid portrait of some of the extraordinary musicians and larger-than-life personalities who brought America’s music to life in the clubs of Chicago’s South and West Sides. Bitten by the Blues is also an expansive history of half a century of blues in Chicago and around the world, tracing the blues recording business through massive transitions, as a genre of music originally created by and for black southerners adapted to an influx of white fans and musicians and found a worldwide audience. Most of the smoky bars and packed clubs that fostered the Chicago blues scene have long since disappeared. But their soul lives on, and so does their sound. As real and audacious as the music that shaped it, Bitten by the Blues is a raucous journey through the world of Genuine Houserockin’ Music.

Book Trumpet Blues

Download or read book Trumpet Blues written by Peter J. Levinson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-11-18 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swing is back in style, and with it a renewed interest in the Big Band Era. And few players dominated that era more than Harry James, whose soaring trumpet solos and romantic hit tunes influenced popular music for a generation. Now, Peter J. Levinson, who knew Harry James personally, has written a revealing biography of this jazz icon, based on nearly 200 interviews with musicians and friends. Harry James led a truly colorful life, and in Trumpet Blues Levinson captures it all. Beginning with James's childhood in a traveling circus, we follow the young trumpeter's meteoric rise in the 1930s and witness his electrifying performances with the Benny Goodman Orchestra. We see how James formed his own band in 1939, an incubator for many pop music stars of the 1940s and '50s, including Frank Sinatra, Connie Haines, Dick Haymes, Helen Forrest, and Kitty Kallen. Combined with James's superb musicianship, peerless trumpet technique and talented sidemen, this stellar group dominated the war years and the immediate post-war period. And James himself, especially after his marriage to film goddess Betty Grable, became one of America's most famous personalities and lived like true Hollywood royalty. Levinson describes their twenty-two-year marriage with insight and sympathy. But he shows how James's marriage--and his triumphant late-1950s comeback in Nevada's casinos--were slowly undermined by his penchant for compulsive gambling, womanizing, and alcoholism. He gives us the inside story of James's sybaritic life style, and probes the profound psychological reasons for James's destructive behavior. The first biography ever written on Harry James, Trumpet Blues is a scintillating portrait of Swing's brightest star--his life, his loves, and the music that defined an era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music, like romance, is the language of the soul. Music allows us to express ourselves, and in so doing makes us feel alive. Jazz music, the only art form created by Americans, reminds us that the genius of America is improvisation; a good beat, a contagious rhythm, an emotional ballad, creative improvisation, jazz has it all. Jazz is the story of extraordinary human beings, black and white, male and female, children of privilege and children of despair, who were able to do what most of us only dream of doing: create art on the spot. Their stories are told in Blue Notes. Blue Notes contains profiles of 365 jazz personalities, one for each day of the year. Each vignette tells a story, some heartwarming, others tragic, but all memorable. The daily entries also provide valuable information on jazz styles, jazz history, instruments and instrumentalists, and such related topics as jazz and religion, women in jazz, drug and alcohol abuse, and racism. These topics can be referenced through an extensive set of indexes. The book's appendix includes helpful background information, a concise overview of jazz music, and even a quiz on jazz biography. While Blue Notes is written for jazz fans in general, experts will value its comprehensive nature. So whether you are curious about jazz or simply love and appreciate music, Blue Notes will provide daily moments of discovery and help you recognize what the rest of the world already has, a music so compelling that it can be said to define the human being in the twentieth century.

  • Pages : 450 pages

Download or read book The Enchanted Screen written by Jack Zipes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-01-27 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Enchanted Screen: The Unknown History of Fairy-Tale Films offers readers a long overdue, comprehensive look at the rich history of fairy tales and their influence on film, complete with the inclusion of an extensive filmography compiled by the author. With this book, Jack Zipes not only looks at the extensive, illustrious life of fairy tales and cinema, but he also reminds us that, decades before Walt Disney made his mark on the genre, fairy tales were central to the birth of cinema as a medium, as they offered cheap, copyright-free material that could easily engage audiences not only though their familiarity but also through their dazzling special effects. Since the story of fairy tales on film stretches far beyond Disney, this book, therefore, discusses a broad range of films silent, English and non-English, animation, live-action, puppetry, woodcut, montage (Jim Henson), cartoon, and digital. Zipes, thus, gives his readers an in depth look into the special relationship between fairy tales and cinema, and guides us through this vast array of films by tracing the adaptations of major fairy tales like "Little Red Riding Hood," "Cinderella," "Snow White," "Peter Pan," and many more, from their earliest cinematic appearances to today. Full of insight into some of our most beloved films and stories, and boldly illustrated with numerous film stills, The Enchanted Screen, is essential reading for film buffs and fans of the fairy tale alike.

Book Confessions of Cinderella Blue

Download or read book Confessions of Cinderella Blue written by Marna A. Hale and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-09-21 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confessions of Cinderella Blue takes the ancient story of Cinderella to a new level. It prepares young women, through stories, for the pitfalls of dating. Little girls who read the original fairy tale of Cinderella dream of becoming a princess due to no achievement on their part. This unchecked innocence carries over into young adulthood and often causes irresponsible behaviors that ultimately have dire consequences of unwanted pregnancies and forms of financial ruin. In this book, Cinderella gets her “happiness” after enduring many disappointments and learning many lessons. When a preteen reads Confessions of Cinderella Blue, she will learn not to cosign financial documents for friends, to practice celibacy, and to not give her heart away too quickly through documents given to Cinderella from her fairy godmother, Madame Fairy: Test for a Good Man and Tips to Maintain a Relationship. The preteen will also go with Cinderella to visit Miss Havisham from Dickens’ Great Expectations to learn of being left at the altar and how to live through disappointments. The story shows girls (and boys) many pitfalls of life (through a lovable character) before actually facing them.
