Book The Cid Theme in France in 1600 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Cid Theme in France in 1600 Classic Reprint written by Gustave L. Van Roosbroeck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cid Theme in France in 1600 Since the Observations sur le Cid of de Scudery, the literary indebtedness of Corneille's Cid to Guillen de Castro's Las M ocedades del Cid has been minutely traced by a host of critics. In accord ance with their preferences for classical or for more romantic forms of art, or in accordance with their national sympathies, they have entered wearisome pleas for the superiority of the Spanish or of the French poet. In the estimation of some German and Spanish critics and of a few modern Scuderys, Corneille is only an imi tator, hardly more than the translator of Las Mocedades del Cid; to most French critics, on the other hand, he remains a genius who did de Castro the honor of transforming his inflated and digressive play into a restrained and classical masterpiece. Nearly all critics, however, agree in one respect: Corneille has intensified the dra matic effect of the play by concentrating upon the moral problem of Chimene, upon her desire for vengeance and her love for the man who has killed her father in a duel. The comparison of both texts confirms this View. To allow the development of the internal drama, Corneille has markedly diminished the number of incidents; he has given a deeper and a more finely shaded analysis of the motives of his characters. Ernest Merimee, for instance, restates this as follows in the preface to his edition of the first part of Las Mocedades del Cid: Le principal m'rite de Corneille n'est certaine ment ni dans l' invention, ni neme dans la perfection de chaque partie, mais dans ce fait qu'il a mis en une lumiere plus vive encore que n' avait fait Castro cc qui fait le fond et 1' int'r't 'ternel du drame: lo lutte de la passion et da devoir, de 1' amour et de l' honneur, chez Rodrigue et chez Chimeric. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cid Campeador: A Historical Romance The "Cid Campeador" has been for centuries the great popular hero of Spain. He takes the same place in that country as King Arthur does in England, Roland, or Rolando, in France, and William Tell in Switzerland; and, like them, his life and exploits are, to a great extent, founded on popular traditions. In English-speaking countries there is very little known respecting him, and the translator ventures to place before the public a work which is considered by Spaniards to be one of the best historical romances in their literature. It is founded on a large number of ballads and other poetical pieces, extant in Spain for centuries, and on a very old work named "The Chronicle of the Cid." The Author writes in his Introduction: "The Cid is the most popular of the Castilian heroes, and not without reason, for in him are personified all the virtues of the citizen and of the soldier. Download or read book The Chronicle of the Cid Classic Reprint written by Robert Southey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chronicle of the Cid Then began his career as a free-lance. With three hun dred followers, he left the kingdom of Alfonso, a banished man. He offered his services first to the Count of Barcelona. They were declined; He then made his way to' the Moorish King of Saragossa, by whom he. Was eagerly welcomed. Eight years he fought for him or his successors, against Moor or Christian alike, winning great renown by his daring and success, and having, by Virtue of his importance, almost royal authority. During this time he made numerous attempts at reconciliation with Alfonso, but without success. At length in 1094 he won his greatest victory, the capture of Valencia, known to this day as Valencia del Cid. It was the richest city of Spain, and there was not a King, Moor or Christian, who did not long to possess it. The Arab historians say that the Cid declared that none of his family had ever possessed a kingdom, and that from the moment when he first beheld Valencia he made up his mind to repair this omission on the part of fortune. At the head of seven thousand men, he marched against it. Destroying the suburbs, he attempted to carry it by assault, but failed, and settled down to reduce it by famine. An army of Almoravides, a fresh inroad of Moors from Africa, marched to its relief, but unavailingly, and after nine months the city yielded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the Chronicle of the Cid Every nation has its hero or heroes, and the hero of the Spanish people is Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar, called El Seid or Cid (the Chief). He was a historic person who really lived and died in the eleventh century, when the provinces of Spain were under different rulers and the country was continually harassed by the Moors, who were not finally driven out until 1609. About fifty years after the death of Ruy Diaz there was written a long poem called the Poema del Cid, telling of his great deeds as a leader against the Moors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from El Cid Campeador: An Opera in Three Acts, Eight Scenes Around the personality and the exploits of Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar, El Cid Campeador, have clustered more ballads and legends and folk lore than have fallen to the lot of any other Spanish hero of romance. The Cid is the national hero of Spain and he flourished and wrought mighty deeds in that golden era when knighthood was in flower, when chivalry was at its height, the age of the crusades, when Moor and Spaniard contested for possession of the Iberian peninsula. There is such a wealth of legend and chronicle and ballad, as well substantiated as such tradi tions can be, that the dramatist is reluctantly put to it to leave out much that is thrilling and ro mantic and even theatrical, instead oi - as is usually the case - having to search for available material. Book excerpt: The stories of the Cid are based on the life of the Spanish warrior Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, who lived approximately from 1043 until 1099. The real "Cid" seems to have fought for both Muslims and Christians at different times and appears to have been a sellsword figure. In the play, however, he is lauded solely as a Christian soldier. The name "El Cid" was derived from the Arabic word for lord ("sayyid") and made Spanish, and further given a French article for Corneille's version. To this day, the Cid remains a popular Spanish folklore character, who has inspired many stories and works of art.
