Book The church transnational land deals and empowering local communities in northern Ghana

Download or read book The church transnational land deals and empowering local communities in northern Ghana written by Emmanuel Zumabakuro Dassah and published by Brill Schoningh. This book was released on 2018 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine having a property that your family has been building for generations. One day, a foreign company submits documents and demands ownership of the land. What should the village community do about it? In Ghana, land has increasingly become an object of trade as a result of new growing, agriculture-based value chains for global biofuel markets. The ethical choices we make about land and its use are at the core of this book. It investigates the challenges of land acquisition for biofuels production exploring the concept of empowerment and Christian ethics within the socio-political power settings of the people of Northern Ghana. It thus considers the historical, theological, ethical and sociological foundations of the Ghanaian land issue. Was soll die Dorfgemeinschaft dagegen machen?

Book Consumer Ethics in a Global Economy

Download or read book Consumer Ethics in a Global Economy written by Daniel K. Finn and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a serious mistake to think that all we need for a just world is properly-structured organizations. But it is equally wrong to believe that all we need are virtuous people. Social structures alter people's decisions through the influence of the restrictions and opportunities they present. Does buying a shirt at the local department store create for you some responsibility for the workplace welfare of the women who sewed it half a planet away? Many people interested in justice have claimed so, but without identifying any causal link between consumer and producer, for the simple reason that no single consumer has any perceptible effect on any of those producers. Finn uses a critical realist understanding of social structures to view both the positive and negative effects of the market as a social structure comprising a long chain of causal relations from consumer/clerk to factory manager/seamstress. This causal connection creates a consequent moral responsibility for consumers and society for the destructive effects that markets help to create. Clearly written and engaging, this book is a must-read for scholars involved with these moral issues.

It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.
