Book excerpt: This study is an investigation of the arrival, planting, and expansion of the Church of England in Loyalist New Brunswick. The obstacles encountered in setting up missions in the frontier both before and after the arrival of Bishop Charles Inglis are documented. It is revealed that the origins, qualifications, zeal, and adaptability of the colony's missionaries were key factors in the Church's foundation and success. Legislated establishment, although British policy, proved half-hearted and of little benefit in colonial New Brunswick. While imperial attention to colonial religious policy was short-lived, the continued interest and aid of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) was crucial. inability to fully understand and appreciate the New Brunswick reality, the SPG remained the only secure source of clerical income. Given the frontier economy, SPG funds were critical to the Church, but it was in the end the exertions of Bishop Inglis and his small band of former New England missionaries who effected, the establishment and long-term viability of the Church of England in Loyalist New Brunswick.

Gladstone, future Prime Minister of England and keen churchman, arranged in 1844 to have a member of this controversial group appointed to the Episcopal bench. Because those associated with this movement were suspected of Roman Catholic theological leanings and perhaps even disloyalty to the English Establishment, such a move was politically and ecclesiastically dangerous in England. Book excerpt: The dissertation proceeds to follow those loyalist clergy who left the Thirteen Colonies as refugees, tracing their reception in Britain, their influence on conservative churchmen there, and their role in rebuilding the imperial Church of England in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Particular attention is given to the relationship between the loyalist refugees, the English high church movement, and the Scottish Episcopal church. Bridging British, Canadian, and colonial American history, it suggests that the American Revolution galvanised an Anglican religious revival in the British Empire and shaped an emerging alliance between the Church of England and conservative politics. It ends in the 1790s, as this alliance solidified under the influence of the French Revolution. Most scholarship on religion and the American Revolution is ultimately concerned with the politics of the revolution. This dissertation, by contrast, asks how the politics of the revolution affected the religious lives of those who lived through it.
