Book Martin Luther s Understanding of God s Two Kingdoms Texts and Studies in Reformation and Post Reformation Thought

Download or read book Martin Luther s Understanding of God s Two Kingdoms Texts and Studies in Reformation and Post Reformation Thought written by William J. Wright and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of God's two kingdoms was foundational to Luther and subsequent Lutheran theology. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, that concept has been understood primarily as a political concept. But is a political reading of the two kingdoms a perversion of Luther's teaching? Leading Reformation scholar William Wright contends that those who read Luther politically and see in Luther a compartmentalized approach to Christian life are misreading the Reformer. Wright reassesses the original breadth of Luther's theology of the two kingdoms and the cultural contexts from which it emerged. He argues that Luther's two-kingdom worldview was not a justification for living irresponsibly on planet earth.

Book Martin Luther s Understanding of Faith and Reality 1513 1521

Download or read book Martin Luther s Understanding of Faith and Reality 1513 1521 written by Ilmari Karimies and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2022-08-03 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ilmari Karimies investigates Martin Luther's understanding of reality and faith. He examines Luther's understanding of reality from three perspectives: firstly God as the self-giving highest good uniting opposites and hiding beneath them; secondly the visible and invisible world; and thirdly human beings as tripartite (body, soul, spirit) and bipartite (flesh-spirit). The author explores the cognitive conflict between these in relation to spirit's grasping of God and the invisible world with reference to Augustinian Platonism. He analyses aspects of faith from the perspective of the theory of divine illumination and shows that Luther represents a realistic Augustinian view. Faith functions as the theological intellect, grasping the invisible world and showing human beings the future good in a manner similar to the medieval notion of ecstatic knowledge. It differs from vision in glory because of sin, as mixed with humanity, and as partial knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of what it means to be a human creature lies at the heart of contemporary wrestling with anthropology, and especially anthropology from a theological perspective. Through both historical and systematic engagement with the so-called Finnish school of Tuomo Mannermaa, this study explores and assesses the anthropological dimension of their theology of theosis. or deification. Mannermaa initiated a minor revolution in Luther studies and in contemporary Lutheran theology by interpreting Luther's doctrine of justification to be a close analog to the Eastern Orthodox doctrine of theosis. but his eeumenical interests led him to minimize or overlook key themes in Luther and sharp distinctions between Luther and Orthodox theologians. Mannermaa's colleague Simo Peura then developed this thesis with specific reference to anthropology in a way reminiseent of the sixteenth-century reformer Andreas Osiander. On closer inspection. the project of Mannermaa and his Finnish colleagues fails to understand adequately both Luther's sourees and his own theological development. In this study. a theological anthropology which is more consistent with Luther's theology is developed. an anthropology which is determined by God's address to his human creatures: what God himself says we are, and what he makes us by that word. Such an answer to the anthropological question refuses to flee from creation but instead upholds the complex and paradoxical nature of human beings as creatures, sinners, and saints. "What it means to be human has become the major topic in theology, philosophy, and the social sciences in our time ... On the basis of Luther's understanding this study proposes a view of humanity in which God's word determines what human identity and human existence are. The Creator's address to his creatures makes their existence possible and frees them to be human---and nothing less! Schumacher's proposal will command careful study and diseussion throughout the world."---Robert A. Kolb. Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis. Missouri "Schumacher provides the most comprehensive appraisal of the Finns to date ... He shows that Luther's is not an alternative view of divination to that of medieval theologians but a subversion of it. No ontic category is as real or definitive of the sinful human as God's justifying word. It is that word alone which imparts grace and new life. Schumacher's work is required reading for any scholar of Reformation studies who wants to understand Luther on his own terms."---Mark C. Mattes, Grand View University. Des Moines. Iowa

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first comprehensive study in the twentieth century of Luther's concept of the Holy Spirit, this book should be welcomed by every serious student of Luther's theology - for although Luther's view of the Holy Spirit dominates every aspect of his vast theological output, it is not always easy to discover what he really thought. Historians and theologians have at different times come to varying conclusions, based on the same fundamental writings of Luther. Enthusiastic followers of the Reformer, in their efforts to convince others, have from time to time fallen into the temptation to oversimplify his teachings. Spiritus Creator is the answer to this confusion. Laying aside the numerous interpretations of others, Regin Prenter, a noted Danish Theologian and scholar, presents Luther's thought itself. In this study he does not ask where Luther's thoughts came from, or how they developed; he asks only what Luther thought. Questioning, for example, whether Luther's view of the Holy Spirit was really so traditional, so much colored by medieval thought patterns as has been widely assumed, Dr. Prenter shows how Luther used Augustinian terms - the vocabulary of his age - yet gave them new content, even new definitions. He demonstrates how Luther's concept of the Holy Spirit did indeed take shape in a traditional form but that it then grew into what is for all Protestants a crucial, evangelical insight. Spiritus Creator is divided into two parts: the concept of the Holy Spirit before Luther had to defend his teachings from the distortions of enthusiasts, and this same concept during his struggle with the enthusiasts. This pattern gives the author opportunity to present the basic statements of the early period without reference to the polemical situation of Luther's later life. It also demonstrates the essential continuity that gives Luther's concept of the Holy Spirit importance for the thinking of all ages - our own not excluded.

Book Martin Luther and the Seven Sacraments

Download or read book Martin Luther and the Seven Sacraments written by Brian C. Brewer and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduction to Martin Luther's sacramental theology addresses a central question in the life of the church and in ecumenical dialogue. Although Luther famously reduced the sacraments from seven to two (baptism and the Lord's Supper), he didn't completely dismiss the others. Instead, he positively recast them as practices in the church. This book explores the medieval church's understanding of the seven sacraments and the Protestant rationale for keeping or eliminating each sacrament. It also explores implications for contemporary theology and worship, helping Protestants imagine ways of reclaiming lost benefits of the seven sacraments.
