Book The Church Music Of William Billings

Download or read book The Church Music Of William Billings written by J. Murray Barbour and published by Da Capo Press, Incorporated. This book was released on 1972-03-21 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both in the extent and the substance of his work, William Billings was the most important composer of the pioneer period of American church music in the last third of the 18th century. His compositions consisted of anthems and psalm tunes -- sacred music except for a handful of the anthems. In his own day Billings was much admired. But even before his death a change of taste in church music had begun to take place, and this became so pronounced in a few years that Billings was almost completely forgotten except in certain rural sections of the South. In recent years an antiquarian interest in Americana has resulted in the publishing of some of Billings' psalms and anthems, including examples of the "fuguing tunes" with which he is chiefly, but erroneously, associated in the popular mind. Those who have sampled the music have found it fresh and enjoyable. They fail to understand why so many writers on musical subjects during the past half century have been both derogatory and patronizing in their appraisal of Billings' work. These detractors agree that he had tremendous enthusiasm and a certain dramatic flair; but, once these admissions have been made, the barbs have been thrust in deeply. Just how illiterate was Billings? It is the opinion of the present writer that Billings' detractors are almost totally wrong in their criticisms. His works do contain glaring faults and weaknesses; but they are seldom those of which he has been accused.

Book Catalog of the Musical Works of William Billings

Download or read book Catalog of the Musical Works of William Billings written by Karl Kroeger and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1991-09-25 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Billings (1746-1800) was the most important native-born composer of the American colonial and Federal eras. He wrote hundreds of choral compositions, which were set to sacred or devotional texts for use by church choirs, singing schools, and musical societies. Extremely popular in his own time, Billings's music was denigrated during the nineteenth century when European styles governed American musical tastes. In the twentieth century his genius was recognized, and his music is widely sung and studied. Originally published in six tunebooks, the 338 extant pieces were issued in a scholarly edition by the American Musicological Society and The Colonial Society of Massachusetts as The Complete Works of William Billings (4 vols., 1977-1990). The present catalog complements the Complete Works by serving as a guide to its contents and providing a wealth of additional data. Included for each composition are exact title; text source; first line; technical information on length, meter, key, and melody; manuscript sources and contemporaneous reprints; bibliography and modern recordings. An extensive list of works cited is followed by five indexes providing access to the material in the catalog by first line of text, Billings's anthem titles, text sources, musical form (tune types), and musical incipits. The catalog provides for Billings's music information similar to that found in Schmeider's listings for Bach and Koechel's listings for Mozart.

Book excerpt: The foremost American musician of the eighteenth century, William Billings wrote more than three hundred compositions and six musical collections at a time when Americans were singing almost nothing but British music. In this study, David McKay and Richard Crawford depict the man, his music, and his place in the tradition of American psalmody. The authors examine Billings' methods, innovations, and interaction with the Boston society in which he lived, placing overall emphasis on his influence on American Protestant sacred music. David McKay is Associate Professor of English at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Richard Crawford is Associate Professor of Music at the University of Michigan. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative reference work investigates the roots of the Sacred Harp, the central collection of the deeply influential and long-lived southern tradition of shape-note singing. David Warren Steel and Richard H. Hulan concentrate on the regional culture that produced the Sacred Harp in the nineteenth century and delve deeply into history of its authors and composers. They trace the sources of every tune and text in the Sacred Harp, from the work of B. F. White, E. J. King, and their west Georgia contemporaries who helped compile the original collection in 1844 to the contributions by various composers to the 1936 to 1991 editions. Drawing on census reports, local histories, family Bibles and other records, rich oral interviews with descendants, and Sacred Harp Publishing Company records, this volume reveals new details and insights about the history of this enduring American musical tradition. David Waren Stel is an associate professor of music and southern culture at the University of Mississippi. Richard H. Hulan is an independent scholar of American folk hymnody.
