Download or read book A New History of the Church in Wales written by Norman Doe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-05 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book marks the centenary of the Church in Wales, following its disestablishment in 1920. Part I provides a historical overview: from the Age of the Saints to Victorian times; the disestablishment campaign; Christianity in Wales since 1920; and broad issues faced over the century. Part II explores the constitution, bishops and archbishops, clergy, and laity. Part III examines doctrine, liturgy, rites of passage, and relations with other faith communities. Part IV deals with the church and culture, education, the Welsh language, and social responsibility. Part V discusses the changing images of the Church and its future. Around themes of continuity and change, the book questions assumptions about the Church, including its distinctive theology and Welshness, ecumenical commitment, approach to innovation, and response to challenges posed by the State and wider world in an increasingly pluralist and secularised Welsh society over the century.

Book A Popular History of the Church in Wales From the Beginning to the Present Day Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Popular History of the Church in Wales From the Beginning to the Present Day Classic Reprint written by J. E. De Hirsch-Davies and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Popular History of the Church in Wales: From the Beginning to the Present Day Of the few histories of the Welsh Church available for English readers, scarcely any cover the whole field from the planting of Christianity in Wales to the present time, and I hope, therefore, that this short historical sketch of the four oldest dioceses of the Ecclesia Anglicana - Eglwys Loegr - may have its use. Eglwys Loegr means the Church of England, not the Church in England as distinguished from that part of it which is within the Principality of Wales. Eglwys Loegr is distinguished, not from any constituent portion of itself, such as the four Welsh sees, but from the Church in France, Germany, Italy, and other lands. The term was more correctly used by the early Welsh Methodists than by Nonconformists to-day. The history of the Welsh Church has, by reason of the linguistic, racial, political and other problems which it presents, certain features of its own which demand the special attention of the student of Church History. The Church in Wales is an organisation older by several centuries than the Church in England, and is the most ancient part of the Christian Church in this realm. It has exhibited through the centuries of its long history a definite character of its own. It claims to be the historic successor, on any scientific definition of continuity, of the ancient British Church, the Church of Dewi Sant. The explicit recognition and acknowledgment of this claim by Freeman, Bryce, Stubbs, and Creighton among historians, by Gladstone and Asquith among statesmen, is evidence that the claim is valid; that it is based upon the plain witness of the facts of history, and that the denial of that claim is due to the exigencies of political programmes. Book The Religious History of Wales

Download or read book The Religious History of Wales written by Richard C. Allen and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an essential reference guide that draws together an impressive collection of academics and religious practitioners to map out for the first time the religious multiplicity and diversity of Wales. For the first 1,500 years or so of its existence, the Christian Church in Wales was a unified entity. The Welsh Church, initially Celtic, but then Roman Catholic, held a virtual monopoly over religious life and belief in the country. The 16th-century Reformation ended the notion of a monolithic Christendom; the proliferation of Protestant sects guaranteed that competition and variety would be the norm. By charting the gradual proliferation of religious communities in Wales, from the 17th to the 21st centuries, this volume seeks to dispel many of the myths of a monochrome Christian, Protestant, or even Nonconformist Wales. Each chapter also uniquely examines the persistence of faith, often in surprising places, in post-Christian Wales. The following religious institutions are discussed: The Church in Wales * Independents (Congregationalists) * Baptists * The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) * Roman Catholicism * Calvinistic Methodism * Wesleyan Methodism * The Moravian Church * Unitarianism * Salvation Army * Pentecostalism * United Reform Church * Seventh-Day Adventism * The Church of the Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) * Jehovah's Witnesses * Evangelicalism * Judaism * Islam * Sikhism * Baha'i Faith * The Ecumenical Dimension.
