Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church in the City If by its profound philosophy that monument of genius, piety, and erudition, "The City of God," was "the death warrant of ancient society," it was also, despite its mystic extravagances, the charter and vindication of the social purposes and program of Christianity. Nevertheless, the world yet awaits the fulfillment of the divine ideal in the production, through the agency of the people of God, of a society adapted to all the needs of man, a society that both permits and assists his complete development in the parts and qualities of his being. Is this achievement possible of realization? Not if Rousseau was correct. "We are told," he says in treating the subject of civic religion, "that a nation of Christians would form the most perfect society conceivable. In this supposition I see only one great difficulty - that a society of true Christians would be no longer a society of men." Pessimism establishes its logic by definitions. Schopenhauer, for example, "asserts that speculation is for action, wisdom for life, and then sophistically argues that we should not expect a metaphysician to be a saint." Christianity cannot organize society if it is itself inhuman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Building the City Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building the City Students of Christian history have traced the fortunes Of this spiritual fellowship amid the storms and struggles Of its career. The Caesars passed away; but their Imperial tradition survived. After centuries of conflict and confusion Charles the Great was crowned as the theocratic head Of a Holy Roman Empire, and for long generations men lived again under a domina tion in which State and Church were intertwined. Slowly the nations Of modern Europe rose from infancy into manhood, and in the end shook themselves free from feudal and ecclesiastical bondage. To-day, Christianity appears more and more divorced from political rule and authority, and yet persisting as an atmosphere of common thought and feeling and belief which pervades our world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book A New Day in the City

    Book Details:
  • Author : Donna Claycomb Sokol
  • Publisher : Abingdon Press

  • ISBN : 1501818899
  • Pages : pages

Download or read book A New Day in the City written by Donna Claycomb Sokol and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many urban congregations remember days of fame and fortune—days when their prominence downtown or in city neighborhoods mattered. Population shifts, the decline of congregations and neighborhoods, and demographic changes depleted the dreams of many urban churches. But not all churches gave up hope. Many congregations are struggling to survive, but thousands of urban churches are thriving again. Churches with revived hope learn to let go of nostalgic dreams and tired habits and to walk with God into a new day of vibrant mission and ministry. Donna Claycomb Sokol and Roger Owens share lessons they’ve learned on the job and from other urban pastors. Along the way, they challenge clichés about church leadership and strategic planning by showing what congregational renewal can look like and how it can become a reality. Each chapter features a set of practical guidelines for leading a congregation to address the questions that matter most. “The urban church can be quite a challenge. I know because I’ve served a couple. Now, two thoughtful pastors with actual urban church experience take an affectionate, positive, honest, and hopeful look at the urban church and give practical wisdom for the revival of languishing urban congregations. There’s a remarkable revival of the urban church in North America. Donna and Roger can help you be part of it!” —William H. Willimon, Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry, Duke Divinity School, Duke University, Durham, NC; retired bishop, The United Methodist Church “Three things excite me most about this book: First, these two young pastors understand the strategic importance of urban ministry and are passionately committed to it. Second, they show that when you turn from tired ‘church growth’ and corporate paradigms, choosing rather to model your ministry on Jesus, new life happens. And third, they explain that transformation is about journeying faithfully with the questions rather than looking for quick-fix techniques. This book could change your ministry.” —Peter Storey, South African church leader; W. Ruth and A. Morris Williams Distinguished Professor Emeritus of the Practice of Christian Ministry, Duke Divinity School, Duke University, Durham, NC

Book Models of the Church

Download or read book Models of the Church written by Avery Dulles and published by Image. This book was released on 2002-05-14 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is today a dramatic reexamination of structure, authority, dogma -- indeed, every aspect of the life of the Church is held up to scrutiny. Welcoming this as a sign of vitality, Avery Dulles has carefully studied the writings of contemporary Protestant and Catholic ecclesiologists and sifted out six major approaches, or "models," through which the Church's character can be understood: as Institution, Mystical Communion, Sacrament, Herald, Servant, and, in a recent addition to the book, as Community of Disciples. A balanced theology, he concludes, must incorporate the major affirmations of each. "The method of models or types," observes Cardinal Dulles, "can have great value in helping people to get beyond the limitations of their own particular outlook and to enter into fruitful conversation with others... Such conversation is obviously essential if ecumenism is to get beyond its present impasses." This new edition includes a new Appendix and Preface by the author.
