Book The Church in Scotland Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Church in Scotland Classic Reprint written by Herbert Mortimer Luckock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church in Scotland The history of the Scottish Church, at least of particular periods, has been often written, and with much detail; it has been more often written indirectly in histories of the nation, for in few countries has the life of the people been so closely interwoven with that of the Church. One fact alone will express the extent of the connection: before the Reformation it was calculated that almost half of the wealth of Scotland was in the hands of ecclesiastics. As far as we know there are only two popular histories of the Church, embracing the whole length of its existence, in use and favour at the present time: one by an Episcopalian, Professor Grub, in four volumes; the other in two, by a Presbyterian, Dr. John Cunningham. When asked to write the history in one volume, I came to the conclusion that it would be more useful, as it has certainly been more interesting, to write at greater length upon the most salient points and eventful epochs than to give the bare outlines of a continuous history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of the Church in Scotland I was elected on the old foundation, as modified in 1857, and my tenure was till death or marriage. Buckle, since Editor of The Times, was elected on the same terms in '78 be vacated on marrying Alice Payn. After that, the Statutes made by Lord Salisbury's Commission took effect, and Fellows were elected for seven years. The value of a Fellowship had been rising rapidly, as the old beneficial leases fell in it stood in '77 at about 300, but agricultural depression soon reduced it to 200. I have always been Opposed, in principle, to what are called Prize Fellowships. Every Fellowship should have some definite duties attached to it. For a year I was a probationary Fellow, not even attending College Meetings, and after that I was strange in a place where nothing was required of me beyond moderately good behaviour. The Codrington Library was my home in Oxford I read widely, perhaps too widely, and formed literary plans, which came to very little. Montague Bernard advised me to write a law-book, but my old dislike of case-law revived I seemed never to master my subject. He also advised me not to dabble in politics. A lawyer, ' he said, should not choose his party until he is ready to enter the House of Commons, and he should not attempt the House until he is ready to take the solicitor-generalship.' I now think this was good advice. In July '77 I joined the Northern Circuit at Appleby. Her schell proposed me as a member of the mess. At Carlisle I addressed a British jury for the first time, and obtained the conviction of two men who had gone into a lonely tavern and compelled the landlady to supply them with much drink. One was defended by Arthur Elliot, the other by John Dickinson. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Scotland and the Scottish Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book Scotland and the Scottish Church Classic Reprint written by Henry Caswall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scotland and the Scottish Church Of those in England who are acquainted with the history of Scottish Episcopacy, it may be safely as serted that the depth of their own Church principles is usually proportionate to the regard which they bear to the depressed Church in the North. Yet, to a great extent, the grossest ignorance and misap prehension on this subject are unhappily prevalent. There are, indeed, members of the Church of Eng land who regard Scottish Episcopacy as a schism, set up in unrighteous opposition to the Kirk, and who sympathize altogether with the party, which, owing to accidental circumstances, has obtained the advan tages of a legal establishment. It appeared to the writer, from such considera tions as the above, that some utility might be found in a book which, though small and portable, should yet serve to clear up popular mistakes and miscon ceptions, and to unravel the apparently entangled web of Scottish Church History. It was thought also that such a work, while giving due credit to the Establishment and its ofi'shoots, might plainly set forth the real grounds of Episcopacy, might shew the instruction to be derived from the misfortunes of other communities, and might point out the benefits and the dangers connected with free synodical action. Download or read book History of the Church of Scotland written by William Maxwell Hetherington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Church of Scotland: From the Introduction of Christianity to the Period of the Disruption in 1843 There is also a necessary continuity of character, as of being, in the life and history of any Church; and that charac ter can'never be rightly understood, how ever familiar we may be with the details of its general history, unless we have a clear and true conception of those lead in g principles which have always formed the master element of its essential exist ence. By keeping them steadily in view, we shall be able to trace distinctly all the various changes and alternations of its course, marking and understanding not merely those external events which are manifest to the world, but those unseen influences which move, and mould, and animate the whole. Even in periods of comparative stagnation, when there seems to be a cessation of all active and vital impulses, the knowledge of what forms the essential characteristics of a national Church may enable us to detect the otherwise imperceptible progress _of a deep and calm under-current, preparing for some new and mighty developement of silently-ripened energies, by which the whole structure of society may be convulsed, and constrained to assume a new aspect, more in conformit with the character of its inward mora and reli gions life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church Establishments Defended: Wilth Special Reference to the Church of Scotland For the delay which has taken place in the publication of this treatise since it was first advertised, the Author has only to plead, in apology to his friends, the unforeseen extent of the work, together with professional engagements. There is one subject connected with the question of Church Establishments, which the Anther has purposely abstained from handling, partly on account of its extent, and partly because the argument is quite independent of it. He refers to Church Property, the origin of which, together with its true nature and relation to property in general, would afford materials for a work of much interest and importance at the present time. The first part was the outline of a course of Lectures prepared for the purpose of introducing those who hear them to an acquaintance with the science of theology. The second part was a delineation of the constitution of the Church of Scotland, meant to furnish young men with some preparation for the discharge of those official duties to which that constitution may call them. The third part contained counsels addressed to students of divinity, respecting those functions by which a minister of the Church of Scotland is distinguished from other office-bearers of that church. Book The Early Scottish Church

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Scottish Church: Its Doctrine and Discipline Prejudices are difficult to overcome; traditions arising from them die hard. The Church in Scotland as it existed in the sixth century has been the source and centre of many of them. They have been repeated and confuted, and repeated and confuted again and again. We welcome the following work by Father Columba Edmonds, O.S.B., of Fort Augustus - not so much, perhaps, because he tells us anything new upon the interesting question of debate, whether the Columban Church acknowledged the supremacy of Rome or not, but because he brings together the contentions of the various Churches which at the present time claim this venerable one as their own, and puts the facts and the arguments for and against in a concise and, at the same time, a comprehensive form. Father Columba may justly be regarded as an authority on this subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. There are opportunities of information there are facilities of reference - there are living men, and facts fortunately not yet dead, not unworthy of notice. Download or read book A History of the Church in Scotland Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Alexander Robertson Macewen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Church in Scotland, Vol. 2 When we scrutinize the movement in Scotland, we find no swift or startling change, but a gradual process of enlighten ment, the permeation of society in all its grades and classes by new ideas and ideals and the rise of new relationships, social, economic and political, resulting in emancipation from a bondage which had been due partly to ignorance, partly to isolation, partly to feudal obligations and the barbarisms of clan life. Political historians have frequently ascribed the revolution which took place in 1560 to those diplomatic negotiations which were recorded in State Papers, and specially to the change in the relations of Scotland to France and England; while many Church historians have written as if feudalism and the papacy had been omnipotent in their respective departments, until they gave way before the aggressions of Geneva Protestantism. But in fact these were only consequences, or, at the most, stages, of a trans formation which was assured, if not accomplished, at a time when England was still regarded as the Auld Enemy, ' and before Calvin had set foot in Switzerland.
