Book The Church in Earnest Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Church in Earnest Classic Reprint written by John Angell James and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church in Earnest Danger? Of what? Not indeed of the downfall of either Christianity or Protestantism. What believer in the truth of revelation, or what follower of the doctrines of the Reformation, has a moment's solicitude on that point? I, for one, feel not a single trepidation for the safety of either of these. I have no doubt of the final, complete, and glo rious triumph of truth over error, and good over evil. Not withstanding the vicissitudes of human affairs, and some of them disastrous ones too, I am a firm believer in the onward course of events. The way of Providence does not resemble one of our modern railways, but is more like a noble river, which is ever winding in its channel, and which, though, amidst its many convolutions, it seems sometimes rolling back upon its source, is ever owing towards the ocean. In such an age as this, when it would look as if a destroying angel were passing over the despotisms of all Europe, and\ making way for the sudden, unexpected, and universal reign of liberty, to doubt which way the current is owing, betrays a deplorable ignorance of the tendencies of events, and of the designs of the great Ruler of the nations. But are liberty and religion identical? Are the downfall of tyranny and of infidelity sure to be contempo raucous? Will a false and seductive philosophy necessarily and immediately wither in the light and air of freedom? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church in Earnest: A Call for the Training Necessary for World Achievements The efficiency of the Church of Jesus Christ depends on the strength of her individual members. This being true, every child Of goo should be anxious to meet every condition that will lead to his largest development and most fruitful service. Many sources of strength stand out prominently in the Word Of God for the enlargement of the believer's life. I wish here to call special attention to the grace of liberality or giving as a source of strength. It may be difficult for some minds to comprehend how liberality can become a source Of power. I am satisfied that if we Will stay close to the Word Of God and accept its teachings on this, as on other mat ters Of revelation, we shall be led to recog nize this great truth. Book The Building of the Church Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Building of the Church The sovereign interest which this lectureship holds in its eye - the work of Preaching - has not been overlooked in the choosing of my subject. I do not forget that I am speaking to men who are interested supremely in the art of preaching, but I invite you to approach the subject through the Christian church. After so many illustrious teachers have spoken on the subject, it would be indeed presumptuous for any man at this late date to attempt to offer additional suggestion or instruction, were it not that the subject of preaching lies, like the New Jerusalem, foursquare, with an ideal number of gates on every side, through any one of which the lecturer may make his way into the heart of the imperial theme. Book The Sunday School and Its Methods

Download or read book The Sunday School and Its Methods written by J. A. Lyons and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunday School and Its Methods: A Practical Treatise for Earnest Workers in This Department of the Church of Christ This book was written because some such book was needed. That it is not from a more competent source is due to the fact that at the time'it was undertaken no one else, in the field for which it is specially designed, seemed willing to assume the responsibility of its preparation. Whether this volume is what was wanted remains to be seen. If it is not, the fault lies elsewhere than in the hon est purpose and earnest effort of which it is the represent ative. Of its deficiencies no one can be so thoroughly conscious as the writer, since no one knows so well the dis abilities under which he labored. Holding the Sunday-school to be of divine origin, it is here considered as an institution of the Church. With other ecclesiastical agencies and instrumentalities, except as related to the subject in hand, this treatise has nothing to do. Where thus related, they are spoken of in pre cisely such terms as are employed in the treatment of the main subject, and, it may be added, with a freedom which may appear to some unwarranted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theodosia Ernest, Vol. 2: Or, Ten Days' Travel in Search of the Church What the prophets often did, and what Jesus habitually did, has been done by good men in every age. They have invented narratives, sometimes brief, and designed to enforce and illustrate a single thought, and sometimes continued and connected, in order to convey a system of doctrine or a series of truths. These are fables, or parables, poems or allegories, or simple stories, as may best suit the objects which the speaker or writer has in view. If Bunyan had merely told in plain, didactic language, the fears, the hindrances, the doubts, the sorrows, the hopes and labors and final triumphs of the Christian, he would have taught just what his Pilgrim's Progress was designed to teach; but he would not have taught it so effectually, nor indeed so truthfully, as he has done by means of his inimitable work of fiction, in which the truth is not only told to the ear, but shown, as it were, to the eye of the mind, acting itself out in its natural and necessary results. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Salvation Sought in Earnest: A Series of Sermons, Showing the Way and the Wisdom of Securing Eternal Life As Christ came not into the world to call the righteous hut sin ners to repentance as joy shall be in heaven over one sinner'that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine Just persons which need no repentance, as the impenitent for whom Christ died, are far more numerous than those who are already passed from death unto life; as the conversion and salvation Of sinners is much more impor tant than the growth Of Christians In grace and knowledge, the main Object of the minister should be. To persuade men to repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. His chief aim should be, not to perfect the Church as it is, but to add to it many, such as shall be saved. And to this object, he should give not only the most of his toils, but the most of his anxiety and care. He should labor not only much, but judiciously. For souls are lost, not only by neglect, but by misdirection. Such are the considerations that have led to the following work. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Opportunity of the Church This little book is not an attempt to prescribe any pro gram or method of reconstruction or to define in any comprehensive way the present tasks of the Christian Church. A good deal more is called for to-day than this little volume at all considers. Good will and earnest purpose are not enough. There must be also careful and competent thinking out of the economic and social problems involved in the next forward steps in human progress. But good will and earnest purpose must be back of all such thinking and it is for good will and earnest purpose that this little book appeals. In the midst of much hesitation and questioning it is a simple word of summons and reassurance, in the faith of the motto written over the door of the old hotel in Duala. Baptized children of the church. As she appeared to be sober and steady, and to have sufficient knowledge to discern the Lord's body, she was doubtless informed, according to the directions of the confession of faith, page 504, that it was her duty and her privilege to come to the Lord's supper. But she had felt no inclination to do so until after the death of her husband. Then, in the day of her sorrow, she looked upward, and began to feel a new, though not an intense interest in the things of religion. She made a public profession, and requested baptism for her two children. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
