Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Church Dictionary The Church Dictionary, of which the Sixth Edition is now published, appeared originally in the shape of monthly tracts, intended by the writer to explain to his parishioners the more important doctrines of the Church, and the fundamental verities of our religion. The title of Church Dictionary was adopted from a work published with a similar object in America, by the Rev. Mr. Staunton; and the work itself assumed the character of short dissertations on those theological terms and ecclesiastical practices, which were misrepresented or misunderstood by persons who had received an education external to the Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Protestant Dictionary: Containing Articles on the History, Doctrines, and Practices of the Christian Church The book now presented to the public may, no doubt, be found fault with both for containing too much and for containing too little. Certain subjects necessarily recur in articles by different writers. The object of providing a handy work of reference for Protestants on the Romish contro vetsy had always to be borne in mind. The Protestant Dictionary does not profess to be complete as a historical or theological lexicon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Churchman's Theological Dictionary Useful as such labour is at all times, it is more especially required at a period when the Symbols and Institutions of churches excite more than ordinary interest, and form topics of current conversation. But the artifice, which unhappily is no uncommon one, of insinuating opinions of things under the guise of an explanation of the meaning of words, the Editor repudiates as disingenuous. He has formed, indeed, his own opinions on controverted points, but he has abstained from inculcating his private views of disputed matters, because his object is not to give instruction but to furnish information. Book The Westminster Bible Dictionary Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Westminster Bible Dictionary Classic Reprint written by Thomas J. Shepherd and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Westminster Bible Dictionary The quickening of Bible study on the part of our Sabbath-school teachers and scholars at the present time, in connection with the remarkable additions recently made to our knowledge on topics related to Scripture interpretation, affords abundant reason for the issue of the Westminster Bible Dictionary. It will meet an existing call for a compact dictionary abreast of the times. The work was entrusted by the Board of Publication to the Rev. Thomas J. Shepherd, D. D., who has devoted to it much study and patient as well as skillful labor. Free use has been made by Dr. Shepherd of all accessible authorities, and especially of Dr. William Smith's invaluable, though not perfect, Dictionary of the Bible, as well as of the Bible Dictionary prepared by the Rev. W. M. Engles, D. D., and previously published by the Board. The thanks of the author and of the publishers are also given to Professor Isaac H. Hall, by whom the sheets of the Dictionary were read, and who, from his stores of Oriental, linguistic and archaeological information, has rendered the work an important service. Numerous engravings illustrating the articles are distributed through the volume, and valuable maps are given at its close. Book A Dictionary of Ecclesiastical Terms

Download or read book A Dictionary of Ecclesiastical Terms written by John S. Bumpus and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of Ecclesiastical Terms: Being a History and Explanation of Certain Terms Used in Architecture, Ecclesiology, Liturgiology, Music, Ritual, Cathedral Constitution, Etc Washing or purification, either of the hands or the sacred vessels. The word is generally used to signify the rinsing of the chalice after the Holy Communion with wine and water, which are reverently drunk by the celebrant (cf. 6th Rubric after Communion Service). In some churches it is customary to sing a short and appropriate sentence of Scripture, with the 117th Psalm - an antiphon, in fact - during the Ablutions. Such sentences have been set to music by various composers, notably Dr W. H. Monk, who, in 1869, wrote four, appropriate to various seasons, for the use of the Church of St Matthias, Stoke Newington, where, from 1852 to 1889, he was organist and director of the choir. They are unpublished. At St Paul's, since 1892, the 150th Psalm has been sung in this place to an ancient chant, arranged by Sir George Martin, organist of the Cathedral. From Easter Day to Trinity Sunday, both inclusive, "Alleluia" is added, forming a very effective termination to the Communion Service at St Paul's, once described by Gounod as the finest thing of its kind on this side the Alps. (1) The Italian term for the Church style; vocal music unaccompanied. (2) Church music in duple time, innumerable examples of which may be found among the masses, motetts, and anthems of the earlier English, Flemish, Italian and Spanish Schools of vocal composition. Our own countryman, Dr Nares (1715-1783), marks his excellent anthem, "Call to remembrance," Alla Cappella. The foreign alla cappella style, with English adaptations, has been much in vogue of late years in some of our principal choirs, such as those of St Paul's and Westminster Abbey. There can be no objection to this, so long as it is not overdone, and so long as the sterling and genuine cathedral music of the last three centuries is not excluded. Book An Ecclesiastical Dictionary

Download or read book An Ecclesiastical Dictionary written by William Staunton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Ecclesiastical Dictionary: Containing Definitions of Terms, and Explanations and Illustrations of Subjects Pertaining to the History, Ritual, Discipline, Worship, Ceremonies, and Usages of the Christian Church The present work is an out-growth or expansion of a much smaller one prepared by the same author, and published several years ago, under the title of 'a Dictionary of the Church, ' etc. The design of the original work was chie y to illustrate and ex. Plain, in a familiar manner, the External Order, or Polity, the Sacraments, Ritual, Ceremonies, and Usages, of the Protestant Episcopal Church, with an especial reference to the demand for information on such subjects among Churchmen in the United States. As it was thought desirable, at the time, that a book chie y intended for popular use should not be inconveniently large and expensive, it was found necessary to proceed on a plan which limited extremely the range of subjects, and excluded almost all topics of a historical, biographical, denominational, or doctrinal nature, except in those articles where the close coddgo' tion of these elements with the point under discussion furnished a justifiable reason for digression. The plan adopted in the work now presented, is not embarrassed or limited by these restrictions; though it has still been thought expedient to touch only on the margin of the boundless field of doctrinal theology. The work embraces nearly all the matter found in the former 'dictionary of the Church, ' with many corrections and improve ments, suggested by later investigation, or by hints from friendly sources. The department of the Ritual has been rendered more complete and instructive, by the insertion of several hundreds of new articles, based on competent authorities; and by the exten sion or careful revision of several of the articles already written. Book A Dictionary of the Bible Vol 1

Download or read book A Dictionary of the Bible Vol 1 written by James Hastings and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of the Bible, Vol. 1: Dealing With Its Language, Literature, and Contents, Including the Biblical Theology; A-Feasts Give heed to teaching.' Perhaps the Church of Christ has never given sufficient heed to teaching since the earliest and happiest days. In our own day the importance of teaching, or, as we sometimes call it, expository preaching, has been pressed home through causes that are various yet never accidental; and it is probable that in the near future more heed will be given by the Church to teaching than has ever been given before. As a contribution towards the furnishing of the Church for that great work, this dictionary OF the bible is published. It is a Dictionary of the Old and New Testaments, together with the Old Testament Apocrypha, according to the Authorized and Revised English Versions, and with constant reference to the original tongues. Every effort has been used to make the information it contains reasonably full, trustworthy, and accessible. As to fulness. In a Dictionary of the Bible one expects that the words occurring in the Bible, and which do not explain themselves, will receive some explanation. The present Dictionary more nearly meets that expectation than any Dictionary that has hitherto been published. Articles have been written on the names of all Persons and Places, on the Antiquities and Archaeology Of the Bible, on its Ethnology, Geology, and Natural History, on Biblical Theology and Ethic, and even on the Obsolete or archaic words occurring in the English Versions. The greater number of the articles are of small compass, for care has been exercised to exclude vague generalities as well as unaccepted idiosyncrasies but there are many articles which deal with important and difficult subjects, and extend to considerable length. Such, for example, and to mention only one, is the article in the first volume on the Chronology Of the New Testament.
