Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church Bells of Essex: Their Founders, Inscriptions, Traditions, and Uses In the length of a preface should bear an inverse ratio to the time taken in the compilation of the book, a brief foreword would suffice here, for "The Church Bells of Essex" has been so long upon the stocks that the present Editors are now far removed from those who began collecting the materials. We will conclude that our readers prefer to know something about the genesis of the work, and will briefly touch on the chief points. When the Tractarian movement begot in those who came under its influence a new reverence for, and interest in the fabrics of our cathedrals and churches, and a careful study of sacred architecture and art, among the objects which awakened interest were such monumental brasses as had survived the spoliation and carelessness of the preceding centuries. These being on the floors of churches naturally attracted attention much sooner than the bells which hung aloft out of sight. In turning over the pages of the Archaeological Journals, we can trace but few instances of bell inscriptions being reported earlier than the Rev. Wm. C. Lukis' 'Account of Church Bells' which appeared in 1857, the first comprehensive attempt at dealing with the rudiments of the present abstruse science of campanology. This word does not appear to have been used in its present sense, according to Dr. Murray's Dictionary, before the time of Lukis, for Craik in 1847 defines campanology as 'the art of ringing bells.' Sir J. H. H. Murray defines it 'the subject of bells; detailed examination of the principles of bell founding, bell ringing etc.' Lukis' book soon set others to work, and the systematic examination of belfries in other districts or counties besides Wiltshire became common. Among early enthusiasts we may notice the Rev. H. T. Ellacombe, a Devonshire worthy who extended his researches into the neighbouring counties of Gloucester and Somerset; Mr. Daniel Tyssen, who became responsible for Sussex; Mr. L'Estrange, who investigated the whole of Norfolk; and Dr. Raven, who published Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church Bells of Warwickshire: Their Founders, Inscriptions, Traditions and Uses Henry Timothy Tilley was an enthusiastic bell-hunter from his undergraduate days, and though I do not know what first attracted him to this pursuit, his notes shew that he began to visit Warwickshire belfries and collect bell-inscriptions in 1874, when he was only about twenty years of age. In the two or three succeeding years before his ordination he visited from his home at Edgbaston a large number (about 120) of the Warwickshire churches, chie y in his own neighbourhood and round Nuneaton and Kineton. The results of his labours up to 1877 were admirably summarised in a short paper read before the Birmingham and Midland Institute in that year. Parochial duties naturally had the first 'claim on his time thenceforward, but in 1892 he had visited nearly every church steeple in the county, and a second paper read before the same Society in that year not only formed a useful supplement to the first, but in conjunction with it gave an interesting survey of the cam panological treasures of Warwickshire. It was then his intention to work up and enlarge his notes into book form, but devotion to parochial work and intermittent breakdowns in health frustrated his hopes, and although during his last years beneficed almost in the centre of the county, the care of an extensive parish demanded all his time and energies. Thus when he was called to his rest in December, 1905, he left behind him no more than a carefully compiled list of the bell-inscriptions, with occasional interesting notes, the two published papers summarising the more valuable results of his labours, and such rubbings and casts of stamps as he had been able to collect from time to time. It was the earnest wish of his widow and family that these notes should not suffer neglect, but should be published in such a form as he had meditated, and when the work of editing and completing them was offered to the present writer, it was with the greatest satisfaction and gratitude that he undertook to pay this tribute to the memory of his friend and fellow-worker. Though the Introduction is necessarily my own work throughout, as well as the actual text of the second part. And though in the necessary process of revising and bringing up to date I have personally visited over sixty of the towers in the county, I could not but feel that my pre decessor's careful and patient labours (if only embodied in my own) justified the appearance of his name in the chief position on the title-page. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church Bells of Kent: Their Inscriptions, Founders, Uses, and Traditions For special assistance I am greatly indebted, first of all, to Mr. E. J. Wells, the secretary of the St. Paul's Ecclesiological Society, a native of the county, and a devoted campanist and practical ringer. He has rendered me most effectual service in verifying and cast-taking. My good friend Mr. J. Meadows Cowper, of Canterbury, has been equally kind steeple-chasing is not his forte - but I owe many thanks to him for very much valuable information from the records of his city, parochial and civic. Another good friend, Dr. Francis Grayling, of Sittingbourne, has verified for me the belfries in his neighbourhood, and thereby spared me much labour; for this and for other useful information I here record my best thanks. I am under much obligation to Mr. Herbert T. Sankey and his partner, the worthy Town Clerk of Canterbury, for kindly undertaking several searches in the Registry of Wills, and for other help.
