Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Slave Power N ow we presume it is sufficiently correct to say, that the Apostles preached the gospel both to the master and the slave and on the profession of their faith received them at once into the Church, without Obliging the master to abjure the legal relation, at least in any open or formal manner. But while so much is admitted, it must be borne in mind that the higher law of love at once did away with all cruelty, all whips, all chains, all imperious conduct, and the master and slave sat down to the same table of the Lord, and wor shipped together in the same assembly; wrought together at the same occupations, worshipped around the same family altar. In a word, the master reserved no rights which the golden rule or the law of love would accord to the bondman. But treason against the people, against mankind, against God, is a great sin, not lightly to be spoken of. The political authors of the war on this continent, and at this day, iare either utterly incapable of a statesman's work, or 'else guilty of that sin. Fools they are, or traitors they must be. Book The M E Church and Slavery Classic Reprint

Download or read book The M E Church and Slavery Classic Reprint written by John P. Betker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The M. E. Church and Slavery The Anti-slavery men in the M. E. Church, occupy a very remarkable position at this time. A position which Christian men cannot occupy and be consistent, if all they say of their Church in her relation to slavery be correct. Their position cannot be defended from the word of God. Nay, rather the word of God plainly condemns it. Contemplating the pictures which they themselves have drawn of the M. E. Church, in her complicity with slavery, no one can, on any scriptural ground, account for these men remaining in her communion another day. In the entire absence of any more favorable light in which to estimate their motives, we are driven to the unpleasant conclusion, that they are governed more by the spirit of sectarianism and love of party in their present operations, than they are by the Spirit of Truth or the Bible. I say not this to give offence. I would not judge these brethren harshly. They, however, have laid themselves liable to such insinuations, or to the equally discreditable one, that the directions given in the Bible in relation to the moral ground they occupy as Christian men, is wholly set aside by them; and that they have adopted instead thereof, the tricks and traps of political parties as promising greater, and more permanent success than can be hoped for by pursuing the course pointed out in the word of God. Book The Slave Power

Download or read book The Slave Power written by J. E. Cairnes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Slave Power: Its Character, Career, and Probable Designs, Being an Attempt to Explain the Real Issues Involved in the American Contest And these means would, in all probability, suffice for the object. To prevent the extension of slavery is, in the general opinion of slaveholders, to ensure its extine tion. It is, at any rate, the only means by which that object can be effected through the interest of the slaveholders themselves. If peaceful and gradual is preferable to sudden and violent emancipation (which we grant may in the present case be doubtful), this is the mode in which alone it can be effected. Further colonization by slaves and slave-masters being rendered impossible, the process of exhausting the lands fitted for slave cultivation would either continue, or would be arrested. If it continue, the prosperity of the country will progressively decline, until the value of slave property was reduced so low, and the need of more efficient labor so keenly felt, that there would be no motive remaining to hold the negroes in bondage. If, on the other hand, the exhaustive process should be arrested, it must be by. Means implying an entire renovation, economical and social, of Southern society. There would be needed new modes of cultivation, processes more refined and intel lectual, and, as an indispensable condition, laborers more intelligent, who must be had either by the introduction of free labor, or by the mental improvement of the slaves. The masters must resign themselves to become efiicient men of business, personal and vigilant overseers of their own laborers and would find that in their new circumstances successful industry was impossible without calling in other mo tivsa than the fear of the lash. The immediate mitigation of slavery, and the edu cation of the slaves would thus be certain consequences, and its gradual destruction by the consent of all concerned, a probable one, of the mere restriction of its area: whether brought about by the subjugation of the Southern States, and their return to the Union under the Constitution according to its Northern interpretation, or by what Mr. Cairnes regards as both more practical and more desirable, the recognition of their independence, with the Mississippi for their western boundary. Download or read book Caste and Slavery in the American Church Classic Reprint written by John Jay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Caste and Slavery in the American Church In the Capitol of our country free coloured men are liable to arrest, on suspicion of being fugitive slaves. If unable to prove their freedom, they are sold as Slaves: and if, after being incarcerated for weeks within the damp and gloomy walls of a prison, they succeed in obtaining the evidence of their freedom, they are still liable to be sold as slaves for life, if they are too poor to pay the jail-fees. In Ala bama a more summary law has been enacted, by which any free man of colour coming into the State after its pas sage may be seized, and held as a slave for life, by the first white man who catches him - and in Florida, a law obtains, which puts to the blush the tale of Shylock and his single pound of flesh. Free coloured debtors may be sold as slaves to satisfy the claim of any white creditor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The American Board and Slaveholding Classic Reprint

Download or read book The American Board and Slaveholding Classic Reprint written by Wm; W. Patton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Board and Slaveholding But these individuals can never forget that, by their own guilty reluctance, they have been deprived of the honor of originating and carrying forward this cause, and they regard it as Sarah did the son of Hagar, when she said, 'Cast out this bondwoman and her son, for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac, ' or, paraphrased and applied, it would read thus: 'Cast out from your sympathies, your prayers, your meetings, your alms, the bondmen in this land and the society which professes to care for them: for the bondman's society shall not be admitted to the churches, along with 'our' Bible, Tract and Mission Societies.' There are many who have not yet become convinced that good can come out of Nazareth, and supposing that the mass of the church still sympathize with them, would fain represent that the opposition to the Board comes altogether from this hated and anathematized anti-slavery society. But this is wholly incorrect, for 1. There is now no national anti-slavery society recognized by all abolitionists, as at the head of the enterprize. 2. No anti-slavery society, as such, has memorialized the Board on the subject of slavery. 3. The memorialists are not all members of an anti-slavery society. 4. Many ecclesiastical bodies have, since the meeting of the Board, protested against its doctrine and report. 5. Remonstrances of a similar nature have come from Canada and from over the Atlantic. Deny it as they may, the Board has placed itself across the channel along which the united and rising and swelling anti slavery sentiment of the World is rushing. The despised band of 'fanatics' has increased to an army, and according to prophecy, 'the little one has become a thousand, and the small one a strong nation.' Their words of truth have been scattered like living coals on the conscience, and have 'gone down, ' as Garrison said, not into oblivion, but 'into the hearts of the people.' Thousands not nominally connected with them, stand ready to act decidedly when the issue comes. Let this be plainly understood, and in its corroboration let me quote the concluding portion of an indignant remonstrance just received from Scotland, having been adopted by the Glasgow Emancipation Society's Committee, after receiving the Report of the American Board: "So far as the influence of this Report may extend. it can but work evil, and only evil, to the cause of Liberty and Christianity. Its tendency appears to us to be to establish principles subversive of the foundation of moral government, viz: 1. That holding and using human beings as property, and breeding and trading in slaves, are consistent with a 'credible profession of Christianity, ' and that ceasing from these sins, is not included in the Gospel idea of 'Repentance and Faith in Jesus Christ.' 2. That a wrong done to man is less sinful, in proportion as it becomes 'intimately interwoven with the relations and movements of the social system.'
