Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Ministry in the Early Centuries: The Eighteenth Series of the Cunningham Lectures The aim of these Lectures is to pourtray the organized life of the Christian Society as that was lived in the thousands of little communities formed by the proclamation of the Gospel of our Lord during the first three centuries. The method of description has been to select writings which seemed to reveal that life most clearly, and to group round the central sources of information illustrative evidence, contemporary or other. The principle of selection has been to take, as the central authorities, those writings which, when carefully examined, reveal the greatest number of details. Thus, the Epistles of St. Paul, especially the First Epistle to the Corinthians, have been chosen as furnishing the greatest number of facts going to form a picture of the life of the Christian Society during the first century, and the material derived from the other canonical writings such as the Acts of the Apostles, the Apocalypse and the Pastoral Epistles, have been arranged around them. Similarly the Didache, the Sources of the Apostolic Canons and the Epistles of Ignatius have been selected for the light they throw on the life and work of the Church during the second century. The Canons of Hippolytus supplemented by the writings of Irenaeus and of Tertullian, have furnished the basis for the description of the organization during the first, and the Epistles of Cyprian of Carthage for that of the second half of the third century. D., at that time pastor of Trinity Church, Philadelphia, but at present Professor of Church History in the Drew Theological Seminary, and myself, but owing to my removal to Germany in 1866, and the claims which Dr. Nadal's large parish so made upon his time as to leave him but little for meeting the literary engagements to which he was positively pledged, a mutually satisfactory arrangement was made by which the continuation and completion of the work was left in my hands. While Lectures I. - VII., IX., and part of X., of the first volume, and portions of Lectures XVI. And XVII. Of the second volume, were translated by him, I deeply regret the absence of his vigor and skill as a translator in the preparation of the body of the work, and especially in the laborious final revision of the whole. It was originally designed to delay the publication of the translation until the issue of a new German edition, but after Dr. Hagen bach's personal assurance that the time of its appearance was very uncertain, and that the present was substantially the final shape which he designed his work to retain, for his emendations would be very few and of a trivial character, chiefly verbal, and by no means such as to justify the slightest delay in the publication of the American edition, it was deemed advisable, by both the publishers and the translator, to commit it to the public. They have endeavoured to correct all errors which have been thus pointed out to them. As the nature of this work has sometimes been a little mis apprehended, it should be added that its authors at no time intended it to be a regular history. When they first mapped out their respective shares in the joint undertaking, their design nad been to write a number of short essays relating to many different features in the religion and Church history of England in the Eighteenth Century. This general purpose was adhered to and it was only after much deliberation that the word Chapters was substituted for Essays.' There was, however, one important modification. Fewer subjects were, in the issue, specifically dis cussed, but these more in detail while some questions - such, ' for instance, as that of the Church in the Colonies - were scarcely touched upon.
