Book Christ and Agriculture

Download or read book Christ and Agriculture written by Steven C. Kuhl and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the midst of the 1980s the crisis of agriculture, so-called, was full-blown. This dissertation asks, "Whatever happened to the farm crisis, anyway?," and sees the answer as involving not only "political" but especially, "theological" concerns. This is done by establishing a series of "useful" definitions of "agriculture," "culture," "crisis," "Christ" and "Church" that move from diagnosis to prognosis. Of particular interest for shaping the question is the experience of the farm crisis as a "persistent problem of missed opportunity." Chapt. 1 seeks to develop a useful definition of agriculture as "culture" as opposed to mere business or eco-endeavor. It correspondingly defines the farm crisis as a "crisis of culture." The rest of the dissertation builds on this finding by way of a theology of culture rooted in the law/gospel theology of Luther and Paul. Chapt. 2 draws on Luther's notion of the political function of the law to define "culture" as the Creator's web of accountability. Chapt. 3 draws on Luther's notion of the theological function of the law to define "cultural crisis" as the Creator's call to repentance. Since repentance is fundamentally impossible for people to do--repentance means death, the foreclosure of one's stewardship--people naturally resist making proper, penitential use of crisis: hence, crisis as a persistent problem of missed opportunity. Chapt. 4 draws on Luther's theology of the cross to define "Christ" as our "Co-steward". Only "in Christ" is penitential dying possible because only "in Christ" can death lead to life. The Epilogue defines the "Church," Christ's co-steward, as the world's "salvational advocate." It briefly explores the significance of Church as penitential remnant and the promise that such an undertaking as repentance might have for contemporary agriculture, all by way of encouraging the Church in this penitential ministry.

Book The Crisis in the Churches

Download or read book The Crisis in the Churches written by Robert Wuthnow and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-03-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when already overworked clergy are being called upon by budget cutting politicians to do more for the poor, the sick, and the elderly, American churches are suffering persistent financial shortfalls. In fact, contrary to popular media images of millionaire televangelists, America's churches are cutting back programs and staff, clergy salaries are stagnating, and many parishes are having trouble raising enough money to keep the church lit and heated on Sunday. Why are America's churches in financial distress? Robert Wuthnow, a leading commentator on religious life in America, asserts that the steady drop in donations, volunteering, and personal involvement is a direct result of a spiritual crisis--a crisis caused in large part by the clergy's failure to address the vital relationships between faith and money, work, stewardship, giving, and economic justice. In The Crisis in the Churches, Wuthnow offers a searching study of this financial crisis and of the spiritual vacuum that has silently grown worse during the past decade. To do this, he lets the churches speak for themselves, quoting extensively from interviews with clergy and laity in sixty Protestant and Catholic congregations throughout the U.S., and drawing from the texts of over 200 sermons, from church financial records, and a national survey. What emerges is that parishioners often feel the church does not care about what they do from Monday to Friday, offers no guidance in their most pressing day to day concerns, yet always seems to be asking for more money. Clergy, for their part, say they hesitate to talk about finances because they know "the money question" makes people uncomfortable. But failure to raise the subject often makes it necessary to cut the very programs and services that middle class parishioners desire and would support. Wuthnow argues that in order to survive, churches must find ways to minister to the economic concerns of their own middle class parishioners. Indeed, of every $1,000 received by churches, $900 comes from people who work in middle class occupations. Clearly, anything that motivates middle class members to become more involved will strengthen a church's financial well being and capacity to serve its people. Although the situation is critical, Wuthnow finds much cause for hope. He points to ideas and programs that some churches have enacted to challenge their members to think differently about work and money and giving. Parishioners sometimes respond positively when clergy speak boldly and concretely about matters of faith and finance, and some churches have formed small groups whose members meet regularly to discuss issues of spirituality, work, personal finances, and stewardship. A serious and sympathetic examination of the crisis behind the stained glass, this thought-provoking volume will be highly valuable both practically and as moral support to clergy, parishioners, and anyone else concerned about restoring vitality and significance to American churches.

Book Jesus for Farmers and Fishers

Download or read book Jesus for Farmers and Fishers written by Gary Paul Nabhan and published by Broadleaf Books. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate disasters, tariff wars, extractive technologies, and deepening debts are plummeting American food producers into what is quickly becoming the most severe farm crisis of the last half-century. Yet we are largely unaware of the plight of those whose hands and hearts toil to sustain us. Agrarian and ethnobotanist Gary Paul Nabhan--the "father of the local food movement"--offers a fresh, imaginative look at the parables of Jesus to bring us into a heart of compassion for those in the food economy hit by this unprecedented crisis. Offering palpable scenes from the Sea of Galilee and the fields, orchards, and feasting tables that surrounded it, Nabhan contrasts the profound ways Jesus interacted with those who were the workers of the field and the fishers of the sea with the events currently occurring in American farm country and fishing harbors. Tapping the work of Middle Eastern naturalists, environmental historians, archaeologists, and agro-ecologists, Jesus for Farmers and Fishers is sure to catalyze deeper conversations, moral appraisals, and faith-based social actions in each of our faith-land-water communities.

Book excerpt: Overcoming Agricultural and Food Crises in Ethiopia is a sobering presentation of the crises of smallholder agriculture, food and nutrition, the environment and the impending threats to the survival and well-being of millions of Ethiopians and the nation. The combination of the obsolete systems on the one hand, with a growing young population, sustained decline of agricultural land per capita, unstructured urbanization and absence of rural industrialization on the other, presents a grim prospect for the contemporary Ethiopian state builders. The book seeks to call on political leaders, policymakers, scholars, business people, religious and moral authorities, farmers, and the general public to urgently mobilize bold vision and action to redress the crises.About the AuthorGetachew Diriba was born and raised in rural Ethiopia like most of his contemporaries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project contributes to our understanding of rural Midwesterners and farm newspapers at the turn of the century. While cultural historians have mainly focused on readers in town and cities, it examines Midwestern farmers. It also contributes to the "new rural history" by exploring the ideas of Hal Barron and others that country people selectively adapted the advice given to them by reformers. Finally, it furthers our understanding of American farm newspapers themselves and offers suggestions on how to use them as sources.
