The play's the thing both poet and public then thought; in comparison with this all else was considered unimportant, and even trivial. With the passing of the great names of the heroic age of the drama, the smaller poets and playwrights, by whom they were succeeded, sought some amends for the inferiority of their plays in an increased attention to scenic detail and display. In our own day a Shakespearean play unaccompanied by elaborate scenery and stage effects, would hardly attract more than a passing notice. The times have changed. Formerly the theatre-goer went to hear the play; now he wants to see it. Shakespeare and Lope de Vega wrote their plays for the ear; now plays are written chiefly for the eye. Book excerpt: In this volume, Kathleen Jeffs draws on first-hand experience of the Royal Shakespeare Company's rehearsal room for the 2004-05 Spanish Golden Age season to put forth a collaborative model for translating, rehearsing, and performing Spanish Golden Age drama. Building on the RSC season, the volume offers methodologies for translation and communication that can feed the creative processes of actors and directors, while maintaining an ethos of fidelity with regards to the original texts. It argues that collaboration between academics and theatre practitioners was instrumental in the success of the season and that the work carried out has repercussions for critical debate of Comedia. The volume posits a model for future productions of the Comedia in English, one that recognizes the need for the languages of the scholar and the theatre artist to be made mutually intelligible by the use of collaborative strategies, mediated by a consultant or dramaturg proficient in both tongues. This model applies more generally to theatrical collaborations involving a translator, writer and director, and will be useful for translation and performance processes in any language.

In order to establish properly a context for the study of literature or history, one cannot always study the works, writers, or era in isolation; rather, performing scholarly studies on these topics as a continuation of what has come before reveals that many thoughts, concepts, character types, criticisms, and social issues have been thoroughly explored by our literary ancestors. This era is referred to as the Golden Age not only because of the voluminous production of art, literature, drama and poetry, but also because writers such as Miguel de Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and Pedro Calderón de la Barca, influenced by the re-birth of the Classical masters, presented the reading and viewing public with genuine human emotions and experiences in a more comprehensive manner than in previous eras. In the twentieth century, Spain faced a series of political crises; the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) and the Franco Dictatorship (1939-75), followed by the Transition and the concept of historical memory, have provided contemporary Spanish writers with the impetus and freedom to express their views. A frequent source of inspiration has been the Golden Age, that epoch of history that produced such political and religious upheaval, and this book explores the manner in which contemporary Spaniards have reached into the past to connect with their present world.
