Book A Chronological Annotated Bibliography on Order Statistics Volume 1 PRE 1950

Download or read book A Chronological Annotated Bibliography on Order Statistics Volume 1 PRE 1950 written by H. Leon Harter and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let a sample of size n from a specified or unspecified population be arranged in nondecreasing order. Then the ordered sample values are collectively called the order statistics (plural) of the sample. In another sense of the expression, order statistics (singular) is that branch of the subject of statistics which deals with the mathematical properties of order statistics (plural) and with statistical methods based upon them. The majority of publications on order statistics deal with the order statistics of specific populations, and many of them involve the use of the sample order statistics to estimate one or more population parameters. The compiler of this bibliography makes a sharp distinction between order statistics and rank statistics, which is a branch of nonparametric statistics. Publications dealing with the ranks of the observations in the sample but not with the values (or expected values) of any of them will not in general be included in this bibliography; however, a few that are needed for comparison of methods based on ranks with alternatives based on order statistics will be included. Similarly, although the method of least squares is not based on order statistics, a substantial number of publications on least squares will be included because most alternative methods are based on order statistics and comparisons with the classical method of least squares are inevitable.

Book Order Statistics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Herbert A. David
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2004-03-22
  • ISBN : 0471654019
  • Pages : 482 pages

Download or read book Order Statistics written by Herbert A. David and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2004-03-22 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an up-to-date coverage of the theory and applications of ordered random variables and their functions. Furthermore, it develops the distribution theory of OS systematically. Applications include procedures for the treatment of outliers and other data analysis techniques. Even when chapter and section headings are the same as in OSII, there are appreciable changes, mostly additions, with some obvious deletions. Parts of old Ch. 7, for example, are prime candidates for omission. Appendices are designed to help collate tables, computer algorithms, and software, as well as to compile related monographs on the subject matter. Extensive exercise sets will continue, many of them replaced by newer ones.

Book Annotated Readings in the History of Statistics

Download or read book Annotated Readings in the History of Statistics written by H.A. David and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a selection of pioneering papers or extracts ranging from Pascal (1654) to R.A. Fisher (1930). The editors'annotations put the articles in perspective for the modern reader. A special feature of the book is the large number of translations, nearly all made by the authors. There are several reasons for studying the history of statistics: intrinsic interest in how the field of statistics developed, learning from often brilliant ideas and not reinventing the wheel, and livening up general courses in statistics by reference to important contributors.

Book Advances in Distribution Theory Order Statistics and Inference

Download or read book Advances in Distribution Theory Order Statistics and Inference written by N. Balakrishnan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-10-23 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to honor the fundamental contributions to many different areas of statistics made by Barry Arnold. Distinguished and active researchers highlight some of the recent developments in statistical distribution theory, order statistics and their properties, as well as inferential methods associated with them. Applications to survival analysis, reliability, quality control, and environmental problems are emphasized.

Book Order Statistics Inference

Download or read book Order Statistics Inference written by Narayanaswamy Balakrishnan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on order statistics and inferenc eis quite extensive and covers a large number of fields ,but most of it is dispersed throughout numerous publications. This volume is the consolidtion of the most important results and places an emphasis on estimation. Both theoretical and computational procedures are presented to meet the needs of researchers, professionals, and students. The methods of estimation discussed are well-illustrated with numerous practical examples from both the physical and life sciences, including sociology, psychology,a nd electrical and chemical engineering. A complete, comprehensive bibliography is included so the book can be used both aas a text and reference.

Book Approximate Distributions of Order Statistics

Download or read book Approximate Distributions of Order Statistics written by Rolf-Dieter Reiss and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed as a unified and mathematically rigorous treatment of some recent developments of the asymptotic distribution theory of order statistics (including the extreme order statistics) that are relevant for statistical theory and its applications. Particular emphasis is placed on results concern ing the accuracy oflimit theorems, on higher order approximations, and other approximations in quite a general sense. Contrary to the classical limit theorems that primarily concern the weak convergence of distribution functions, our main results will be formulated in terms of the variational and the Hellinger distance. These results will form the proper springboard for the investigation of parametric approximations of nonparametric models of joint distributions of order statistics. The approxi mating models include normal as well as extreme value models. Several applications will show the usefulness of this approach. Other recent developments in statistics like nonparametric curve estima tion and the bootstrap method will be studied as far as order statistics are concerned. 1n connection with this, graphical methods will, to some extent, be explored.

Book The History of Statistics

  • Author : Stephen M. Stigler
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press

  • Pages : 436 pages

Download or read book The History of Statistics written by Stephen M. Stigler and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1990-03-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This magnificent book is the first comprehensive history of statistics from its beginnings around 1700 to its emergence as a distinct and mature discipline around 1900. Stephen M. Stigler shows how statistics arose from the interplay of mathematical concepts and the needs of several applied sciences including astronomy, geodesy, experimental psychology, genetics, and sociology. He addresses many intriguing questions: How did scientists learn to combine measurements made under different conditions? And how were they led to use probability theory to measure the accuracy of the result? Why were statistical methods used successfully in astronomy long before they began to play a significant role in the social sciences? How could the introduction of least squares predate the discovery of regression by more than eighty years? On what grounds can the major works of men such as Bernoulli, De Moivre, Bayes, Quetelet, and Lexis be considered partial failures, while those of Laplace, Galton, Edgeworth, Pearson, and Yule are counted as successes? How did Galton’s probability machine (the quincunx) provide him with the key to the major advance of the last half of the nineteenth century? Stigler’s emphasis is upon how, when, and where the methods of probability theory were developed for measuring uncertainty in experimental and observational science, for reducing uncertainty, and as a conceptual framework for quantitative studies in the social sciences. He describes with care the scientific context in which the different methods evolved and identifies the problems (conceptual or mathematical) that retarded the growth of mathematical statistics and the conceptual developments that permitted major breakthroughs. Statisticians, historians of science, and social and behavioral scientists will gain from this book a deeper understanding of the use of statistical methods and a better grasp of the promise and limitations of such techniques. The product of ten years of research, The History of Statistics will appeal to all who are interested in the humanistic study of science.
