Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 7, 1870, an act of the state legislature created Lincoln County, named for Pres. Abraham Lincoln, from Lawrence, Franklin, Copiah, Pike, and Amite Counties. Settlement began more than 50 years earlier with Samuel Jayne's small trading post on St. Stephens Road. Extensive timber resources, the arrival of the railroad in 1857, and the 1859 founding of Whitworth Female College put the county on the map. Logging, lumber mills, and other industries brought scores of people to the region. The agricultural endeavors of cotton and farming provided a way of life before the oil boom of the 1940s. The varied ethnic and religious history of the residents further shaped the county into what exists today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lincoln County is often associated with such legendary figures as outlaw Billy the Kid, Smokey the Bear, and renowned painter Peter Hurd. Named after Pres. Abraham Lincoln in 1869, the new county saw itself through many struggles, including the Lincoln County War, during which cattle barons and landowners bitterly fought over government beef contracts and farmland. At that time, Lincoln was the largest county in the United States and is now home to modern mountain towns such as Carrizozo, Capitan, Ruidoso, and the locally famous ghost town White Oaks, which had been a gold rush boomtown. Lincoln County also contains the beautiful Hondo Valley settlements and ranching communities such as Tinnie, Picacho, San Patricio, Hondo, and Glencoe. From the rolling hills of the Hondo Valley, to the bloody streets of Lincoln, all the way to the forested mountains of Capitan, this retrospective explores the area's rich history.

Download or read book The Lost Treasure of Lincoln County written by Nancy Sifford Alana and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-01-11 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Great American Adventure The Lost Treasure of Lincoln County is a childrens historical fiction for older children and adults that promotes pride in America. The spirit of patriotism is weaved throughout the adventures of two boys, Jonas and Dale, who find an old wooden box that contains a treasure map. With the help of a local historian, the boys find the treasure. The contents of the treasure teach the boys about the Siefert/Sifford family who immigrated to America in 1753 from Germany. The story takes place in Lincolnton, North Carolina, in 1958 and ends when the boys return from the Viet Nam War in the early 1970s. The novel teaches about the history of the American flag, how to fold a flag, and why a flag is positioned at half-staff. This novel promotes respect for our military men and women both in the present and in the past. A section at the end of the book helps the reader know if the information in the book is fact or fiction. The Great Pennsylvania Wagon Road, the U. S. Mint in Charlotte, NC, the Lincolnton flood of 1916, and the Battle at Ramsour's Mill are mentioned in the story. The book contains a family tree that begins with Joachim Siefert and ends with John F. Sifford and other family history information.
