Book excerpt: This book comprises details, not only interesting to every person concerned for the welfare of society, but useful to the world in pointing out the consequences of guilt to be equally dreadful and inevitable. The author noticed that in most of the works published before its release, little attention was paid to the ultimate moral or beneficial effects to be produced by them upon the public mind; and that while every effort is made to afford amusement, no care was taken to produce those general impressions, so necessary to the maintenance of virtue and good order. The advantages of precept are everywhere admitted and extolled; but still more effectual are the lessons which are taught through the influence of example, whose results are but too frequently fatal. The representation of guilt with its painful and degrading consequences, has been universally considered to be the best means of warning youth against the danger of temptation; the benefits to be expected from example are too plainly exhibited by the infliction of punishment to need repetition; and the more generally the effects of crime are shown, and the more the horrors which precede detection and the deplorable fate of the guilty are made known, the greater is the probability that the atrocity of vice may be abated and the security of the public promoted.

Book The Chronicles of Crime Or the New Newgate Calendar Volume 1 of 2 Illustrated

Download or read book The Chronicles of Crime Or the New Newgate Calendar Volume 1 of 2 Illustrated written by Camden Pelham and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-10-30 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chronicles of Crime; or, The New Newgate Calendar is a series of memoirs and anecdotes of British criminals from the earliest period to 1841. Forgery, murder, embezzlement, arson, burglary, treason, pickpocket, parricide, returned transport, cutting and maiming, mutiny, piracy, conspiracy, robbery, poisoning race-horses, rape, accessory to a rape, bigamy, polygamy, swindling, child-stealing, unlawful torture, sedition, manslaughter, and receiving stolen goods were some of the crimes committed by these Newgate prisoners. The Newgate Prison was a prison in London, at the corner of Newgate Street and Old Bailey just inside the City of London. It was originally located at the site of Newgate, a gate in the Roman London Wall. The gate/prison was rebuilt in the 12th century, and demolished in 1904. The prison was extended and rebuilt many times, and remained in use for over 700 years, from 1188 to 1902. All manner of criminals stayed at Newgate. Some committed acts of petty crime and theft, breaking and entering homes or committing highway robberies, while others performed serious crimes such as rapes and murders. The number of prisoners in Newgate for specific types of crime often grew and fell, reflecting public anxieties of the time. - Wikipedia EXCERPT FROM The Chronicles of Crime; or, The New Newgate Calendar (Preface) FEW words are necessary to introduce to our readers a work, the character and the object of which are so legibly written upon its title-page. "Chronicles of Crime" must comprise details, not only interesting to every person concerned for the welfare of society, but useful to the world in pointing out the consequences of guilt to be equally dreadful and inevitable. It is to be regretted that in most of the works of the present day, little attention is paid to the ultimate moral or beneficial effects to be produced by them upon the public mind; and that while every effort is made to afford amusement, no care is taken to produce those general impressions, so necessary to the maintenance of virtue and good order. ... The comparison of the offences, and of the punishments of the last century, with those of more recent date, will exhibit a marked distinction between the two periods, both as to the atrocity of the one, and the severity of the other. Those dreadful and frequent crimes, which would disgrace the more savage tribes, and which characterised the lives of the early objects of our criminal proceedings, are now no longer heard of; and those characters of blood, in which the pages of our Statute-book were formerly written, have been wiped away by improved civilisation and the milder feelings of the people. ... The necessity for punishment as the consequence of crime, can neither be doubted nor denied. Without it the bonds of society must be broken-government in no form could be upheld. ... The cases will be found to be arranged chronologically, which, it is presumed, will afford the most satisfactory and the most easy mode of reference... London, July 1, 1840. Book The Chronicles of Newgate Vol 1

Download or read book The Chronicles of Newgate Vol 1 written by Arthur Griffiths and published by Golden Text. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I undertook the work of which these two volumes are the result, I scarcely realized the extent of the task before me. Now at the termination of my labours, which have extended over a period of nearly five years, I cannot give my work to the public without regret that it has not been accompanied by deeper study and more widespread research. But I have, in truth, been almost overwhelmed by the mass of materials at hand. These always increased enormously with every digression, and I found at length that I must be satisfied with what I had instead of seeking for more. Even with this restriction I have often been compelled to reject much, to epitomize and perhaps unduly abbreviate what I have used. A really copious and detailed history of Newgate would be a most voluminous affair. This well-known prison, which has stood for centuries upon the same site, is in itself an epitome of the criminal history of England; to have traced its chronicles down from epoch to epoch, closely and minutely, would have been wearisome to the reader. There is a family resemblance in crimes in all ages; when, therefore, the more prominent cases have been selected for description, a general impression will have been conveyed of the whole. I have followed this principle throughout, and have endeavoured to present a general, but not too detailed, picture of the various criminal periods through which Newgate has passed.

Download or read book The Chronicles of Newgate Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Arthur Griffiths and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chronicles of Newgate, Vol. 1 of 2 Perhaps the refinement of torture, however, had been reached under the cowardly and superstitious Louis XI, whose iron cages were of such shape and size that the prisoners could languish in them for years unable either to stand upright or to stretch full length upon the floor. One feels the grim humour of fate that condemned the Bishop of Verdun, their inventor, to be the first to suffer in them. Life - long confinement under such conditions was the so-called clemency of rulers desiring to be thought merciful. Supported first by hope, then deadened by despair, men endured life in these prisons for years only to leave them bereft of health or reason. The famous names of those who languished in them is legion. Fouquet, the default ing minister of Louis XIV, whose magnificence had rivalled that of the king himself, was punished by such captivity for twenty years. The Man with the Iron Mask, whose identity, lost for three cen tuties, has been proved beyond a doubt after care ful comparison of all theories, pined his life away in one of them, accused, like Dreyfus, of having sold a secret of state.
