Book Christmas Truce by the Men Who Took Part

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Includes revealing first-person accounts of how the truce unfolded and the amazing interaction between enemies • An exhaustive work of comprehensive research and study in various files and paperwork • Beautifully illustrated with many rare and unpublished photographs • A must-have for military historians, enthusiasts, academics, students, scholars and those interested in the First World War The Christmas Truce of 1914 remains a moment of enduring fascination more than a century after the day the First World War guns fell silent. Now for the first time, hundreds of first-person accounts of this most extraordinary period of history have been gathered together telling the story in their own words of the soldiers who met in peace in No Man’s Land. The stories of men from English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh regiments who played and joked, sang and danced, swapped gifts and shared food and drink with the enemy before returning to war on the Western Front. Christmas Truce by the Men Who Took Part: Letters from the 1914 Ceasefire on the Western Front is the largest collection ever drawn together of letters sent home by the officers and soldiers who laid down their guns and shook hands with their foes. The eye-opening accounts of the unofficial armistice between German and British forces capture the trepidation and exhilaration, the curiosity, anger, joy and despair of that first Christmas on the unforgiving battlegrounds of the Great War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novella is about the multi-century feud between two southern, probably, families. The Hampden and Drayton families had been fueding since early Colonial days. Like so many interfamily feuds, the original reason -- who had the most prestigious title, "Captain" Hampden or "Colonel" Drayton -- may seem silly on the surface of it to outsiders, like us. But, just as with the famous Hatfield and McCoy feud, there's nothing silly about it if you live in the middle of it. And so it was with Hampden-Drayton feud. Perhaps not as bloody as the Hatfields and McCoys, but no less contentious. In a surprise ending, as so often as happens in real life, it takes a child to bring the two families together at last, fittingly, on Christmas Eve. Fittingly, because what better present can Christmas bring than peace? Included in this Illustrated Edition of "The Christmas Peace" are 10 relevant illustrations that are unique to this edition of the book.

Book excerpt: They had lived within a mile of each other for fifty-odd years, old Judge Hampden and old Colonel Drayton; that is, all their lives, for they had been born on adjoining plantations within a month of each other. But though they had thus lived and were accounted generally good men and good neighbors, to each other they had never been neighbors any more than the Lévite was neighbor to him who went down to Jericho. Kindly to everyone else and ready to do their part by all other men, the Draytons and the Hampdens, whenever they met each other, always passed by on the other side.
