Book When Flying Was Fun

Download or read book When Flying Was Fun written by Bill Eads and published by America Star Books. This book was released on 2007-01-15 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Flying Was Fun! is an autobiographical collection of aviation anecdotes covering four decades of flying, starting with the sixties. These humorous and sometimes poignant stories are told from a first person perspective by the author, who was a Naval Aviator during the Vietnam War and spent over thirty years as an airline pilot with United Airlines. These memoirs relate to those days when pilots actually flew airplanes, before the days of “glass cockpits” and computer-operated flights. Those were the days when passengers dressed up in their Sunday finest for a trip to the airport to go on a flight that would take them on the adventure of their lives! This was a time when airline pilots and flight attendants looked and felt sharp as they strode to their airplanes with pride in their uniforms and the feeling that they truly were part of the most glamorous profession in America.

Unless…she’d be willing to cast her wish-making magic on his own Christmas family crisis? Holiday has less than a week to rescue Alex’s family’s Christmas, arrange a Grinch-defying Christmas Eve blind date, and get herself home before a blizzard closes the roads—or worse, before they give in to the growing attraction between them. As Holiday teams up with exactly the right man at exactly the wrong time, can she find a way to make her own wish for love come true this Christmas?

Book Christmas Sucks

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joanne Kimes
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2008-09-17
  • ISBN : 1440501173
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Christmas Sucks written by Joanne Kimes and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-09-17 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These days, Christmas lights adorn front porches before the Thanksgiving turkey is even in the oven. Plane tickets to visit hardly-missed relatives cost more than the suitcase full of presents people have to lug across the country. And radios everywhere play songs about that fat guy in a red suit on an endless loop. Yes, it’s official: Christmas Sucks. This title is a humorous look at America’s commercialization of the Christmas holiday season and the terrible travel, inordinate amount of preparation, and family strife that accompanies it. You can commiserate with the fact that everyone drives themselves into debt buying gifts, no one enjoys seeing long-lost relatives, and everyone is creeped out by the department store Santa. With twelve days of Christmas, there’s plenty of reasons why this is far from the most wonderful time of the year.

Book Pacific Skies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jerome Klinkowitz
  • Publisher : Univ. Press of Mississippi
  • Release : 2009-09-18
  • ISBN : 1496800087
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book Pacific Skies written by Jerome Klinkowitz and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2009-09-18 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1941 to 1945 the skies over the Pacific Ocean afforded the broadest arena for battle and the fiercest action of air combat during World War II. It was in the air above the Pacific that America's involvement in the war began. It was in these skies that air power launched from carriers became a new form of engagement and where the war ultimately ended with kamikaze attacks and with atomic bombs dropped over Japan. Throughout the conflict American flyers felt a compelling call to supplement the official news and military reports. In vivid accounts written soon after combat and in reflective memoirs recorded in the years after peace came, both pilots and crew members detailed their stories of the action that occurred in the embattled skies. Their first-person testimonies describe a style of warfare invented at the moment of need and at a time when the outcome was anything but certain. Gathering more than a hundred personal narratives from Americans and from Japanese, Pacific Skies recounts a history of air combat in the Pacific theater. Included are the words of such famous aces and bomber pilots as Joe Foss, Pappy Boyington, Dick Bong, and Curtis Lemay, as well as the words of many rank-and-file airmen. Together their stories express fierce individualism and resourcefulness and convey the vast panorama of war that included the skies over Pearl Harbor, Wake, and Guadalcanal and missions from Saipan and Tinian. As Pacific Skies recounts the perilous lives of pilots in their own words, Jerome Klinkowitz weaves the individual stories into a gripping historical narrative that exposes the shades of truth and fiction that can become blurred over time. A book about experiencing and remembering, Pacific Skies also is a story of unique perspectives on the war.

  • Pages : 308 pages

Download or read book A Light in the Wilderness written by James D. Snyder and published by Past Perfect Florida Histor. This book was released on 2006 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although nearly 7 million people live along the southeast Florida coast, scarcely three generations ago it was a wild, lawless frontier ruled by bears, snakes and alligators. But when a lighthouse was built at Jupiter Inlet in 1860, it became the hub for hunters, surveyors, Civil War blockade runners, Union gunboats and pioneer farmers. A Light in the Wilderness, with over seventy rare photos, maps and letters, tells how southeast Florida survived the catharsis of the Civil War, how the lighthouse at Jupiter drew the first families into its orbit, and how it became a key link in the steamboat-railroad path that led people to the "Garden of Eden."

Book Thanks for the Great Flight

Download or read book Thanks for the Great Flight written by Captain James F Vaughan and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I never considered I would become an airline pilot. It was always " too expensive "or "took too much time", or I would not be hired "with-out a four college degree". Perhaps because " I wore eye-glasses..." I was content to offer Flight Instruction in my community, and did quite well teaching new low time private pilot students, and Advanced certificate pilots. I have been employed by six airlines, and the only reason I was hired at each one was because the airline needed pilots to operate the airline! I began researching the commercial pilot status and numbers, and realized there truly is a pilot shortage world wide. In my book I speak about the training and preparation that go into obtaining a pilot license. I will take the reader on an actual Airline Transport Pilot check-flight, describing the sensations and maneuvers required for the Captain candidate to master. We will fly a simulator during our training, and I will relate a humorous story that helped to break up the monotony of performing the same flight profile over, and over again. I will explain the various aircraft systems as they pertain to flight, so perhaps a non-pilot airline passenger may feel more informed of how an aircraft operates. I will also address the aircraft performance factors that may actually aid the passenger in selecting routes and times, to ease their occasional travel delays. Lastly, I will relate a few "super-natural " instances that by my only explanation the Christian Lord was watching over my flight. I have truly been blessed in my life by becoming a commercial airline pilot!
