Book Horace the Christmas Spider

Download or read book Horace the Christmas Spider written by Will Howard and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horace is a young spider that lives with his grandpa at the top of an old oak tree. Every morning, he walks to school with his two best bug friends (BBFs), Maya Ladybug and Freddie Ant. As winter approaches, Horace's two friends begin telling him about all the wonderful traditions their families will be celebrating at Christmas. Not knowing what Christmas is, Horace feels left out of all the excitement. After his grandpa explains the meaning of Christmas and the various traditions that go along with it, Horace is saddened to discover that his family doesn't have any traditions of their own. He's also worried about exchanging gifts with his friends because he doesn't know what exactly to give them. As Christmas draws nearer, the answer to Horace's problems reveals itself, allowing him to create both a family tradition and a permanent solution to his gift-giving dilemma. Horace the Christmas Spider is a tale that embraces both the meaning of Christmas and the importance of sharing traditions with family and friends. It also reaffirms the notion that it's better to give than to receive. Horace the Christmas Spider was written partly as an homage to A Charlie Brown Christmas by Charles M. Schulz and will hopefully keep your family in the holiday spirit for many years to come.

Book excerpt: The Christmas Ant, written by Jack L. Mauldin and illustrated by JanOvation, captures the magic of Christmas, from heartwarming acts of giving and receiving to magical journeys deep into an ant castle, where a Queen rules, soldiers guard, and ants prepare for the surprise that is to come. This delightfully illustrated children's book spins a sweet tale of simple acts of kindness, of never giving up, and looking beyond yourself. Intertwining great character traits and heroic actions into a mystical story, The Christmas Ant sparks imagination and is expected to create many memorable nights cuddling together as parents and children explore the world of Scout, the little unimportant ant who is searching for a gift for his Queen. Jack L. Mauldin, the author, found inspiration for the book from a solitary ant wandering across the counter in his kitchen while baking Christmas cookies. Jack imagined the scout ant searching for something to give its Queen, and that became the basis for his story. Jack says it was surprising to his entire family when he shared the fully developed story of Scout, the ant, along with his serious plans to publish a children's book. They were shocked largely because he is a physician who has lectured medical students for forty years and run a busy practice as a gastroenterologist in Birmingham, AL since 1976. Dr. Jack Mauldin has been secretly entertaining the budding talent for writing children's books for years. He explains, "I write a lot of stories in my mind but rarely put them down on paper. Once in a while, I have a muse and it will come to me as a whole story. The Christmas Ant came that way; it just fell out and I embellished it." Dr. Mauldin says that he intentionally focused on writing a story that has life-lessons and interests children in reading. "We often watch our grand kids exclaim, 'Oh look it's a bug!' when they see an ant, so I used that enthusiasm for bugs as a way to tell the universal story of working hard and never giving up on a juvenile level." The Christmas Ant is ideal for developing literacy with its rich descriptions and the bright, colorful, detailed illustrations. Jack was amazed to discover the artistic abilities of JanOvation (Jana Nielsen) because she was able to illustrate exactly the images Jack had envisioned as he wrote the story, "You can go in my kitchen and see that Jana's picture of the kitchen sink and the little boy captures it all. Most of what came out in the illustrations is exactly how our house looks or what I imagined." Jana says, "Jack is an amazing person to work with. His descriptive writing made the book fun to illustrate and he has a wonderful personality. Jack would say things like, 'Can you give Billy a haircut? It's looking a little long in back." One of the most fascinating illustrations in the book is the cross-section of the ant castle on the inside. Jack says, "Kids are fascinated by ants. They get ant farms to watch and study the ants in their hills working." Jana's ant castle is sure to captivate children's imagination and prepare them for the next books in the series. Dr. Jack Mauldin assures us this is just the beginning of Scout's journeys. More books on this honorable ant are soon to be written and illustrated, with many more life-lessons to discover. Book The L2 Acquisition of Tense Aspect Morphology

Download or read book The L2 Acquisition of Tense Aspect Morphology written by M. Rafael Salaberry and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2002-10-24 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume provides a cross-linguistic perspective on the development of tense-aspect in L2 acquisition. Data-based studies included in this volume deal with the analysis of a wide range of target languages: Chinese, English, Italian, French, Japanese, and Spanish. Theoretical frameworks used to evaluate the nature of the empirical evidence range from generative grammar to functional-typological linguistics. Several studies focus on the development of past tense markers, but other issues such as the acquisition of a future marker are also addressed. An introductory chapter outlines some theoretical and methodological issues that serves as relevant preliminary reading for most of the chapters included in this volume. Additionally, a preliminary chapter offers a substantive review of first language acquisition of tense-aspect morphology. The analysis of the various languages included in this volume significantly advances our understanding of this phenomenon, and will serve as an important basis for future research.

Download or read book A Bat s End written by John Woinarski and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2018-09-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the evening of 26 August 2009, the last known pipistrelle emerges from its day-time shelter on Christmas Island. Scientists, desperate about its conservation, set up a maze of netting to try to catch it. It is a forlorn and futile exercise – even if captured, there is little future in just one bat. But the bat evades the trap easily, and continues foraging. It is not recorded again that night, and not at all the next night. The bat is never again recorded. The scientists search all nearby areas over the following nights. It has gone. There are no more bats. Its corpse is not, will never be, found. It is the silent, unobtrusive death of the last individual. It is extinction. This book is about that bat, about those scientists, about that island. But mostly it is an attempt to understand that extinction; an unusual extinction, because it was predicted, witnessed and its timing is precise. A Bat's End is a compelling forensic examination of the circumstances and players surrounding the extinction of the Christmas Island pipistrelle. A must-read for environmental scientists, policy-makers, and organisations and individuals with an interest in conservation.

Book excerpt: In Lost Wonders Tom Lathan tells ten powerful stories of species that have lived, died out and been declared extinct since the turn of the twenty-first century. 'Superb storytelling . . . an exhilarating and vital book' - Charles Foster, author of Cry of the Wild Many scientists believe that we are currently living through the Earth’s sixth mass extinction, with species disappearing at a rate not seen for tens of millions of years – a trend that will only accelerate as climate change and other pressures intensify. What does it mean to live in such a time? And what exactly do we lose when a species goes extinct? In a series of fascinating encounters with subjects that are now nowhere to be found on Earth – from giant tortoises to minuscule snails the size of sesame seeds, from ocean-hopping trees to fish that wag their tails like puppies – Tom Lathan brings these lost wonders briefly back to life and gives us a tantalising glimpse of what we have lost within our own lifetime. Drawing on the personal recollections of the people who studied these species, as well as those who tried but ultimately failed to save them, and with beautiful illustrations, Lost Wonders is an intimate portrait of the species that have only recently vanished from our world and an urgent warning to hold on all the more tightly to those now slipping from our grasp. Book The Action Plan for Australian Birds 2020

Download or read book The Action Plan for Australian Birds 2020 written by Stephen T. Garnett and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2021-12 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Action Plan for Australian Birds 2020 is the most comprehensive review of the status of Australia's avifauna ever attempted. The latest in a series of action plans for Australian birds that have been produced every decade since 1992, it is also the largest. The accounts in this plan have been authored by more than 300 of the most knowledgeable bird experts in the country, and feature far more detail than any of the earlier plans. This volume also includes accounts of over 60 taxa that are no longer considered threatened, mainly thanks to sustained conservation action over many decades. This extensive book covers key themes that have emerged in the last decade, including the increasing impact of climate change as a threatening process, most obviously in Queensland's tropical rainforests where many birds are being pushed up the mountains. However, the effects are also indirect, as happened in the catastrophic fires of 2019/20. Many of the newly listed birds are subspecies confined to Kangaroo Island, where fire destroyed over half the population. But there are good news stories too, especially on islands where there have been spectacular successes with predator control. Such uplifting results demonstrate that when action plans are followed by action on the ground, threatened species can indeed be recovered and threats alleviated.

Book excerpt: Never assume things are the way they appear. Five Tuscaloosa police officers meet at a local bar to reflect and reminisce about wild shenanigans, heroic actions, and their most heartbreaking moments while celebrating twenty-five years of service of one of their own. This book was inspired by real-life events and the police officers who lived them. The story will keep you guessing until the spine-chilling end. See what readers are saying... “I just finished reading The Retirement, and wow. Just wow! It isn't often that the ending of a book stops me in my tracks and brings tears to my eye, but this one did. Well done from the first page to the last. I have sat with cops in bars just like the Top Shelf and swapped war stories just like these friends did, and their stories ring true. Well done, Mr. Robinson. I will be looking for more of your titles.” - Nick Russell (New York Times bestselling author) “If you want to know what it really feels like to be a police officer in a college town this is the book for you. As the wife of a retired officer I felt like I was sitting with my husband after he got off work and was winding down. I recognized some of the incidences in the book as similar to the ones my husband talked about (of course names were changed to protect the innocent or maybe not so innocent). The characters are authentic (I actually recognized some of them). The ending was so unexpected that I actually gasped when I read it! I cried through the last nineteen pages of the book. I strongly encourage you to give The Retirement a try, especially if you like fiction based on real life.” - Becky Brown (coupleofbeesread.com) “Great read, didn’t expect the ending. Got me there! I loved it! Would definitely recommend. Much respect to our men in blue.” - Nikki Malensky “I couldn’t put it down. I’ve read hundreds of books and I have this one in my top 5 of all time. I hope he writes many more in the future.” - Lee Mobley “It was cool to read a book based on my hometown and I definitely didn’t see the ending coming!” - Heather M Wyatt (Author of My Life Without Ranch)
