Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. Book Christian Survival Guide

  • Author : Christopher Roberts
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2017-05-18
  • ISBN : 9781521322673
  • Pages : 118 pages

Download or read book Christian Survival Guide written by Christopher Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This mini book will provide you with seven steps along the path of righteousness; encouraging Christians that God is with them no matter what. Even though this Christian Survival Guide is short, it will provide readers with a taste of the kind of books I am writing to encourage the body of Christ today; as we prepare for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. The first step to Christian survival will consider that God wants to restore those who may have been going through difficult times in their lives. It's very easy for a Christian to loose their spiritual edge, especially if they have been going through circumstances that have required all their attention. We shall consider how to rely more on God to motivate our spirituality in these last days of time. The second step to Christian survival will focus on how to exercise patience and love towards those in our churches and fellowships; those who may not conform to the way that we do things in the Kingdom of God. In this chapter we shall consider how to exercise patience and love rather than being overly critical and judgemental towards those in need of help and guidance in their lives. The third step towards Christian survival will evaluate the difference between judgment and spiritual discernment. In the first half of this chapter we shall consider how to correctly judge one another. In the second half of this chapter we shall consider the need to use discernment when facing some of the false doctrines that are invading our churches today. The forth step to Christian survival will discuss how to be led by the Holy Spirit, rather than adhering to a legalistic code of practice that many churches observe today. Christianity is not about observing some specific doctrine or even looking good before others, it's about obeying God and experiencing the leading of the Holy Spirit in our individual lives; even though that leading may be different to how God leads other people in their day-to-day walk with him. The fifth step to Christian survival will analyse the correct appropriation of God's grace in our lives. We need grace to help us seek God until he sets us free from the temptations and sins that plague many christians today; something that cannot be achieved through the observance of some law telling us that we should not sin. The penultimate key to Christian survival will attempt to gain an understanding between faith and works; works will not bring us to Christ. However, faith without works is dead. Therefore, we shall consider the right balance that we need to achieve between faith and works. The final step to Christian survival will discuss the need to be prepared to let God change us from vessels of dishonour into vessels of honour; fit for the Master's use. God is able to do this by allowing many of us to pass through various trails and difficulties that affect people today. Rather than running away from such trials and tribulations, God may be trying to speak to us and change us more into the image of his Son Jesus Christ. It is my prayer that this short book will encourage you to face whatever it is that comes against your life, and turn it into something good that will benefit both you and the Kingdom of God at the same time (Genesis 50:20).

Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Book Survival Guide for the Soul

Download or read book Survival Guide for the Soul written by Ken Shigematsu and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE WORD GUILD 2019 CHRISTIAN LIVING BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD "The pages you are about to read may feel like a literal rescue." —Ann Voskamp, New York Times Bestselling author Survival Guide for the Soul is a profound spiritual exploration of God's love—a love that many of us understand intellectually without fully grasping or relying on in our day-to-day experiences—a love that fills our sails with joy and frees us to truly flourish. Many of us are driven by an ambition to accomplish something big outside ourselves. On all sides, we're pressured to achieve—professionally, socially, financially. Even when we're aware of this pressure, it can be hard to escape the vicious circles of accomplishment, frustration, and spiritual burn-out. Drawing on a wide range of sources from Scripture to church history to psychology and modern neuroscience—as well as deeply personal stories from his own life—Ken Shigematsu, recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal and pastor of Tenth Church in Vancouver, BC, vividly demonstrates how the gospel redeems our desires and reorders our lives. Pastor Shigematsu offers fresh perspective on how certain spiritual practices help orient our lives so that our souls can flourish in the midst of a demanding, competitive society. And he concludes with a liberating and counter-cultural definition of true greatness. If you long to experience a deeper relationship with Christ within the daily pressures to succeed, Survival Guide for the Soul is packed with biblical wisdom and a godly approach to transcend the human tendency to define ourselves by our productivity and success. "Loaded with practical insights and encouraging thoughts, every reader will benefit from Ken's work." —Max Lucado, New York Times Bestselling author

Book Hope Heals

Download or read book Hope Heals written by Katherine Wolf and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When all seems lost, where can you find hope? Katherine and Jay Wolf married right after college and sought adventure far from home in Los Angeles, CA. As they pursued their dreams--she as a model and he as a lawyer--they planted their lives in the city and their church community. Their son, James, came along unexpectedly in the fall of 2007, and just six months later, everything changed in a moment for this young family. On April 21, 2008, as James slept in the other room, Katherine collapsed, suffering a massive brain stem stroke without warning. Miraculously, Jay came home in time and called for help. Katherine was immediately rushed into brain surgery, though her chance of survival was slim. As the sun rose the next morning, the surgeon proclaimed that Katherine had survived the removal of part of her brain, though her future recovery was uncertain. Yet in that moment, there was a spark of hope. Through forty days on life support in the ICU and nearly two years in full-time brain rehab, that small spark of hope was fanned into flame. Hope Heals documents Katherine and Jay's journey as they struggled to regain Katherine's quality of life and as she relearned to talk, eat, and walk. As Katherine returned home with a severely disabled body but a completely renewed purpose, she and Jay committed to celebrating this gift of a second chance by embracing life fully, even though that life looked very different than they could have ever imagined. As you uncover Katherine and Jay's remarkable story, you'll be encouraged to: Find lasting hope in the midst of struggle Embrace the unexpected Welcome God's miracles into your everyday life In the midst of continuing hardships, both in body and mind, Katherine and Jay found what we all long to find: a hope that heals the most broken place--our souls. Let Hope Heals be your guide along the way. Praise for Hope Heals: "As I read this book, tears streamed from my eyes even as joy flooded my heart. Jay and Katherine are a raw yet refreshing testimony to the unshakable trustworthiness of God amidst the unimaginable trials of life. Katherine and Jay's dedication to each other and the Lord through their most devastating season is inspiring. You know “how to” get healthy… but now there’s finally a book to help you find your “want to”- the lasting emotional and spiritual motivation to meet your goals and stay healthy. Replace rationalizations that lead to failure with wisdom that leads to victory. Reach your healthy goals and grow closer to God through the process. This is not a how-to book. This is not the latest and greatest dieting plan. This book is the necessary companion for you to use alongside whatever healthy lifestyle plan you choose. This is a book and Bible study to help you find the "want to" in making healthy lifestyle choices.
