Book The Christian Lady s Magazine

Download or read book The Christian Lady s Magazine written by Charlotte Elizabeth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Lady's Magazine: January, 1840 It never was in the Editor's contemplation to make this little work a controversial one: simply to set forth the truth, in varied and attractive garbs as abi lity might be given, and the kind help of friends assist her to do, was the whole of her aim. But events of stirring character have come to pass, a crisis of great moment has drawn nearer and nearer; the church has felt many shocks from those winds and waves that are destined to prove its stability on the Rock; and even women that were at case have been called upon to rise up, and to keep watch and ward with their brethren. It is for this cause that the Christian Lady's Magazine has perhaps appeared to lose somewhat of its feminine character, while in duty constrained to give notice to those within the house, of some mighty wave rolling on, some men acing cloud darkening the horizon, some sapping flood creeping stealthily towards the foundation of the building. From such duty the Editor never did, and with God's help, never will shrink back. The consequence has been an experience new, and cer tainly painful to her. Attacks, some of them coarse and abusive, in the public prints that avowedly ad vocate the cause of Popery, Infidelity, and Republi canism: some harsh, bitter, and contemptuous, from a party of another class, who arrogate to themselves an infallibility that will not stand the test of scrip ture; and along with these, abundance of private anonymous rebukes, breathing the Spirit of arrogance and ill-will. Certainly if the Editor felt at liberty to assume the character of a careless daughter, ' to sit down again and be at case, it would wonderfully smooth her path, and might lead to the attainment of more gmeral approval: but this must not he. The tale that is told, of the fleeting years of one oh scure individual, and that individual a female, shall not, she humbly trusts, be the tale of Meroz. Book The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture

Download or read book The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture written by Allison Graham and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2011-09-12 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture examines how mass media have shaped popular perceptions of the South--and how the South has shaped the history of mass media. An introductory overview by Allison Graham and Sharon Monteith is followed by 40 thematic essays and 132 topical articles that examine major trends and seminal moments in film, television, radio, press, and Internet history. Among topics explored are the southern media boom, beginning with the Christian Broadcast Network and CNN; popular movies, television shows, and periodicals that have shaped ideas about the region, including Gone with the Wind, The Beverly Hillbillies, Roots, and Southern Living; and southern media celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Truman Capote, and Stephen Colbert. The volume details the media's involvement in southern history, from depictions of race in the movies to news coverage of the civil rights movement and Hurricane Katrina. Taken together, these entries reveal and comment on the ways in which mass media have influenced, maintained, and changed the idea of a culturally unique South.

Book Gender and Violence in Islamic Societies

Download or read book Gender and Violence in Islamic Societies written by Zahia Smail Salhi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-05-22 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the uprisings that spread across the Middle East and North Africa in late 2010 and 2011, the issue of state public violence against both men and women dominated the headlines. But gender-based violence, in both its public and private forms, has for the most part remained unnoticed and is often ignored. The forms that this kind of violence can take are influenced by cultural norms and religious beliefs, as well as economic and political circumstances. In 'Gender and Violence in Islamic Societies', violence is perceived not only as physical harm, but includes various forms of violence directed at women because they are women. These include segregation in the workplace and limiting women's access to wealth, gender stereotyping in the media and education, verbal aggression and humiliation, control of women's finances and income, forced veiling, restricted access to education and health. Gender-based violence is thus analysed in its various forms and localities, encompassing both the public and private spheres: within the family, the general community,at work and in various state institutions. Here, Zahia Smail Salhi brings together a wide range of examples of gender-based violence across the Middle East and North Africa, from discrimination in the workplace in Jordan to the physical abuse of underage domestic workers in Morocco, and from psychological and verbal violence against women in Tunisia and Algeria to the practice of female genital mutilation in Egypt. The evidence demonstrates that the violence, far from being of universal character across the region, is instead diverse, in both its intensity and in the processes of addressing such violence.
