Among the more distinguished Christian martyrs, the accounts of whom have happily been preserved for us, one of the earliest and most illustrious was Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch. Te have only to turn to the Acts of the Apostles to see how important a place in the early history of Christianity the great city of Antioch was. Large numbers of Christians were found there in the very first days of the Gospel.* It was here that the name of Christians T was first given to the disciples of Jesus, and the great Apostle Paul made this, the capital of Syria, his head-quarters for several years; while from thence he, with his fellow-labourers, spread the word of God through Asia Minor and Greece. The labours of St. Paul were specially addressed to the Gentiles at Antioch, but St. Peter, whose work lay principally among the J ews, also visited Antioch, and made a large number of con verts there. Ignatius, of whom we come now to speak, was well known to both these Apostles. We are told by Chrysostom that he was nursed up by the Apostles, and made partaker both of their familiar discourses and of their more secret. Book Early Christian Writings

Download or read book Early Christian Writings written by and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 1987-04-30 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writings in this volume cast a glimmer of light upon the emerging traditions and organization of the infant church, during an otherwise little-known period of its development. A selection of letters and small-scale theological treatises from a group known as the Apostolic Fathers, several of whom were probably disciples of the Apostles, they provide a first-hand account of the early Church and outline a form of early Christianity still drawing on the theology and traditions of its parent religion, Judaism. Included here are the first Epistle of Bishop Clement of Rome, an impassioned plea for harmony; The Epistle of Polycarp; The Epistle of Barnabas; The Didache; and the Seven Epistles written by Ignatius of Antioch - among them his moving appeal to the Romans that they grant him a martyr's death.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Father's Present to His Children, Vol. 1 of 2 The Author scarcely need say that his work is not intended for young people below the age of fourteen. In the composition of the book, a seeming tautology sometimes occurs: what is just touched upon in one place, is more expanded in others: and some subjects are intentionally re peated. To give additional interest to the vol umes, numerous extracts, and some anecdotes are introduced which tend to relieve the dul ness of didactic composition, and prevent the tedium of unvarying monotony. Book Doctrinal Errors of the Apostolical and Early Fathers Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Doctrinal Errors of the Apostolical and Early Fathers It has been very common with writers on divinity to deal tenderly with the errors of the early Christian fathers, and much might with propriety be urged in justification of the practice. There is that also, in the nature of past controversies, which will satisfactorily account for it. But, it cannot be concealed, that this forbearance of the Protestant divines is now taken advantage of by the Roman Catholics, and those who agree with them on the subject of the unwritten tradition of the church, and that it occasions considerable difficulty and inconvenience. The following work is composed under a sense of this difficulty. The author began to peruse the writings of the early fathers with considerable doubt and hesitation, as to the mode in which their tradition ought to be received. And it occurred to him long before he had completed his undertaking, that a faithful exposure of their mistakes might subserve an useful purpose in the cause of Christianity.
