Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Examiner and General Review, 1835, Vol. 17 As for the rest, - the propagandists of atheism, the men who love atheism from eccentricity, or misanthropy, or dead ness of sou1, - I say it with submission, but I say it with the utmost possible confidence in the wisdom of the course, Let them alone. Conversion by the ordinary modes of ia struction and argument is precluded. Gratify them not with a few short days of that notoriety which they so much covet. Leave them to the natural in uences of their system leave them to the silent disgust which their excesses must awaken in a community not absolutely savage leave them to the cant and priestcraft of a few ignorant and interested leaders: and it is not perhaps entirely past all hope that, in this way, some of them may be so far reclaimed as to become asham ed of their cause, ashamed of one another, and ashamed of themselves. This book was released on 2017-01-08 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Examiner and General Review, 1840, Vol. 27 This distinction, I admit, is very general. But I think it will be found, without being very accurate, to'answer the practical purpose which I have in View. Reading, doubtless, may com bine both instruction and amusement, and the reader may seek both. In history, biography, and travels, he may Often find both. But every one must be aware, that there is a great deal of reading among us, merely for entertainment. Novels are commonly read with no other View or thought. On the other hand, I wish it to be considered, that there is a kind of readin which is of a far higher character. A man may take a booe with the express intent to think over it. His purpose is not passively to receive what the book communicates, but to think, to examine what the book says; to give his mind a task; to strengthen his powers. His mind is a crucible and what he takes into it, is to be melted, and moulded into a form that makes it his own makes it his own, not by reception, but by re-formation not by simple transfusion, but by thorough trans mutation. And no mind is worth much, without something, more or less, of this habit. This is the essential characteristic Of an original mind. It is not, as many seem to suppose, that its thoughts are absolutely new; that no such thoughts ever entered the human mind before; but that it re-forms, re-arranges Old thoughts, and presents them in new aspects and applica tions. I dwell upon this point a moment, for in this new coun try, where we are apt to suppose that many things are new, which are old enough, it is needful that this matter be under stood. Sciolists, dreamers, fanciful and extravagant men, may have conceptions so strange, that it may seem to them and to others, that nobody ever thought the like before; and in some sense, it is very possible that nobody ever did; one may hope so, at least but the truly comprehensive and original mind knows that it is working with materials as old as the creation and that not its materials, but only its method of working, can be new, or peculiar to itself. All true progress is but the re production Of the Old, aye, and commonly of the well known and familiar, in new forms. This book was released on 2016-10-16 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Examiner and General Review, 1842, Vol. 31: Third Series, Volume XIII Had the legislatures of the various states stood still, after a refusal to lay the restraints which it was in their power to lay, they would be liable to complaint for negligence, though not perhaps for positive error. But the same authority, which let loose the banks on the community, without those bridles which legislative restriction could afford, emancipated them by the act of charter from the responsibility which rests on all.other proceedings of trade. Should a company of merchants go into business without the immunities of a charter, they would be liable to the full extent of their individual estate, for the debts which they collectively incurred. They would be prudent, therefore, in their movements, because their imprudence would be injurious not only to the community, but to themselves. Suppose that they joined themselves together for banking pur poses, they would become responsible both in a body and singly, for whatever notes they issued, for whatever deposites they received, for whatever accommodations they gave. Let a man of loose business principles march into the directors' chamber, or take his seat in the president's chair, - he would be restrained from the deviations into which his own wayward ness would lead. Him, by that magical gravitation which a sense of individual interest creates. Banking houses would be subject to the same regulations as those which hold good in establish ments for pursuing other branches of trade, and there would be no temptation to those who were intrusted with their man agement to squander their funds, since they would perceive that for the deficiency thus created, their private fortunes must answer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Examiner, Vol. 11 of 29: And General Review I propose to address you, at this time, Fathers and Breth ren in the Christian Ministry, upon the subject of the Christ ian Miracles particularly in their character of an evidence of Christianity as a revelation from God. The present aspect of Theology amongst us 1 must be my apology for the adoption of a subject which might otherwise be deemed but ill suited to the occasion of a Pastoral Conference. By miracles, I understand something more than the deriva tion Of the term implies, that is, more than simply wonder ful works, namely, such wonderful works as have been com mouly supposed, by believers in Christianity, to be wrought by the special aid and interposition of God. It is to this class of wonderful works, if I mistake not, that the application of the term miracles is generally restricted. By the Christian mira cles, I understand those, and only those, of which we find the record in the New Testament. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Examiner and General Review, 1833, Vol. 14 WE have little fafilt to find with this publication, except as regards the mode of getting it up. The pieces which enter into the collection, are, we suppose, perfectly harm less. No considerate reader, at least, can be injured by them, nor can the cause of Christianity sufl'er by their re publication, provided their origin and history, so far as known, he told. But it was due, we think, from the editor, in fairness, to state the principle on which they were ex cluded from the number of books esteemed of authority among Christians. The language of the Preface, too, is, in some respects, exceptionable. It speaks of the writings which compose the New Testament, as selected from the various Gospels and Epistles then in existence, by cer tain compilers, a mode of expression which, as will hereafter appear, is calculated to convey an erroneous im pression of the manner in which the volume of canonical Scriptures was formed. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Examiner and General Review, 1833, Vol. 13 We were rather short-handed in those days, and being in the presence of a blockaded enemy, and liable, at half an hour's warning, to be in action, we could not afford to be very scrupulous as to the ways and means by which our numbers were completed, so that able-bodied men were secured to han die the gun-tackle, falls. It chanced one day that we fell in with a ship filled with emigrants, a description of vessel called, in the classical dictionary of the cockpit, an Irish guinea man. Out of her we pressed twenty Irishmen, besides two strapping fellows from Yorkshire, and one canny Scot. Each of this score of Pats was rigged merely in a great coat, and a pair of something which might be called an apolo gy for inexpressibles while the rest of their united wardrobe might have been stowed away in the crown of any one of their hats. Their motives for emigrating to a country where mere health and strength of body are sure to gain an independent provision, were obvious enough; and I must say, that to this hour I have not been able to forget the melancholy cry or bowl with which, the separation of these hardy settlers from their families was effected by the strong arm of power. It was a case of necessity, it is true, but still it was a cruel case, and one, for the exercise of which the officer who put it in force deserves almost as much pity as the poor wretches, whose feel ings and interests it became his bounden duty to disregard.
