This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Sin, Vol. 1 of 2 More than one able philosopher of our day has observed that the question of human liberty is the question of the future and any one who is acquainted with the philosophy of Comte, now so fashionable, and the Determinism to which it leads, will feel the truth of the remark. Let me, it is said, unerringly know a man's character and antecedents, and I will unerringly predict his moral acts. Mr. John Stuart Mill has become a very able champion of this doc trine, which he would call Invariability, in his Exami nation of Sir W. Hamilton's Philosophy (chapter This great question of human liberty Muller argues out with a master-mind, and in the present work freedom is philoso phically established. Muller shows that Determinism, even in its finest form, is really predeterminism, and that philoso phically and practically it is utterly untenable. His disserta tions on formal and real freedom in the beginning of Book III. Take up the argument where Mr. Mill leaves it, and vindicate man's responsibility and guilt as a free agent, in triumphant opposition to philosophical Determinists, whether they be Spinoza's followers or Comte's. Book Christianity and Sin Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christianity and Sin Classic Reprint written by Robert Mackintosh and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and Sin The reader will observe that Chapters I-IV deal with the Old Testament and its period, V-VIII with the New Testament, and IX-XII with post-biblical history. It would also be possible to draw a dividing line after Chapter IX. Up to that point everything studied, even the most sacred and most authoritative, belongs to the world of ancient thought. From Chapter X onwards, the atmosphere is or ought to be modern. Some points for which space was lacking in Chapter VII of this book are more fully treated in an article in the Expositor for May 1913 upon 'The Roots of St. Paul's Doctrine of Sin.' Similarly, in connection with Chapter VI, I might name three articles contributed to the Expository Times for 1905 on 'The Dawn of the Messianic Consciousness.' In terminating a task of three years, I pray God that, in spite of all deficiencies, this little book may make some contribution to the study of a topic which, however difficult and painful, is inseparably connected with faith in Christ. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clark's Foreign Theological Library, Vol. 2: Muller on the Christian Doctrine of Sin The topic Of inquiry which the conclusions we have arrived Results of at set before us is very obvious. The presence of fotnierin evil in human life as the positive antithesis of qumes' good, is a fact which cannot be denied; neither can it be explained as a necessity arising from the divine government of the world; such a supposition would only be another way of denying the existence Of evil altogether. This antithesis to good exists not only as a fact Of consciousness, or as an illusion which vanishes upon the standing-point of the Absolute; it is manifest to the eye of God Himself; for He it is who condemns evil by the voice of conscience and the world's judgment, and who is destroying it by His Redemptive work in the hearts of all who yield to His gracious rule. Yet this very fact that God condemns evil and negatives its power, witnesses that the antithesis is not caused nor ordained by Him. Sin is to be found only in the creature, and can have its being only through the creature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fact of Sin: Viewed Historically and Doctrinally There is no one of the sacred writers who has given sin more elaborate treatment than the Apostle Paul. Two remarkable pas sages at once attest this. One is Romans v, 12: Wherefore, as by one man sin en tered into the world, and death by sin: and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. Again (1 Timothy i, 15) the apostle says, It is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. The statement of men as sinners is a distinct con ception of the divine revelation. Error wrong, disharmony with one 's conditions legal disobedience, a condition which is to be righted in some way, is found in a greater or less degree in all religious thought. But the conception of sin as a violation of God's law, as antagonism to God's holiness, as a condi tion requiring penalty from which there must be deliverance by divine power, is peculiar to Christian theology. Book Historical Theology

  • Author : Gregg Allison
  • Publisher : Zondervan Academic
  • Release : 2011-04-19
  • ISBN : 031041041X

Download or read book Historical Theology written by Gregg Allison and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 898 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical Theology presents the key pillars of the contemporary church and the development of those doctrines as they evolved from the history of Christian thought. Most historical theology texts follow Christian beliefs in a strict chronological manner with the classic theological loci scattered throughout various time periods, movements, and controversies—making for good history but confusing theology. This companion to the classic bestseller Systematic Theology is unique among historical theologies. Gregg Allison sets out the history of Christian doctrine according to a topical-chronological arrangement—one theological element at a time instead of committing to a discussion of theological thought according to its historical appearance alone. This method allows you to: Contemplate one tenet of Christianity at a time, along with its formulation in the early church—through the Middle Ages, Reformation, and post-Reformation era, and into the modern period. Become familiar with the primary source material of Christian history's most important contributors, such as Cyprian, Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Barth, and others. Understand the development of evangelical doctrine with a focus on the centrality of the gospel. Discern a sense of urgent need for greater doctrinal understanding in the whole church. Historical Theology is an easy-to-read textbook for any Christian who wants to know how the church has come to believe what it believes today. Gregg Allison's clear and concise structure make this resource an ideal introduction to Christian doctrine.
