Download or read book The Christian Doctrine of God Classic Reprint written by William Newton Clarke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of God Christianity is a doctrine Of God and a life in God. It is scarcely more; for its great peculiarity is its proclamation Of a work of gracious help from God to man, performed because God is what he is, and all its substance beyond this consists in the unfolding Of what it means, in experience and thought, that God is such a Being as Jesus Christ makes known. Christianity is religion with such a God, and Christian theology is the doctrine of such a God, and of that which follows from his being. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of God, Vol. 1: Dogmatics Dogmatics is not the Word of God. God can make His Word prevail in the world without theology. But at a time when human thought is so often confused and perverted by fantastic ideas and theories, spun out of men's own minds, it is evident that it is almost impossible to preserve the Divine Word with out the most passionate intellectual effort to te-think its mean ing and its content. The simple Christian may, it is true, under stand and preserve God's Word without theology; but for those Christians who are involved in the thinking of their own day, and who, as children of their own day, are deeply influenced by these currents of thought, an all-inclusive and thorough effort to re-think what has been given' 'to faith ls absolutely indis pensable. This is particularly true for those whose calling it is to proclaim this faith to others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Search for the Christian Doctrine of God

Download or read book The Search for the Christian Doctrine of God written by Richard Patrick Crosland Hanson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 966 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988, The Search for the Christian Doctrine of God is still considered by many scholars to be the finest work on the Arian Controversy. Examining scholarly works on the Controversy and many original texts, Professor Hanson, provides a clear understanding of how the traditional and historic doctrine of God as the Holy Trinity reached its most mature and enduring form. The author is not primarily concerned to defend the orthodox position itself, but rather to discover and examine the formation of that orthodoxy. The history of the events - the Councils, the interventions of the Emperor, the rivalries of sees, the behaviour of bishops, the varying fortunes of the different schools of thought and their leaders - is interwoven with the progression of thought and doctrine during the sixty years of the Controversy. Professor Hanson sees the problem of the reconciliation of two concepts which were both part of the very fabric of Christianity - monotheism and the worship of Jesus Christ as divine.

Book The Christian Doctrine of God One Being Three Persons

Download or read book The Christian Doctrine of God One Being Three Persons written by Thomas F. Torrance and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by one of the twentieth-century's foremost modern Trinitarian theologians The Christian Doctrine of God remains a classic ground work for scholars and students alike. In the book Thomas F. Torrance offers a detailed study of the most profound article of the Christian faith - the Holy Trinity. Torrance adopts a holistic approach when examining the inter-relatedness of the three persons - Father, son, and Holy Spirit - and their dynamic Communion with the Being and Nature of God. Combining immense academic range with his characteristically fresh theological perspectives, Torrance builds a significant theological bridge between ancient and modern, as well as between the Roman and Protestant theology; he engages deeply with the Church Fathers and discusses the ontological nature of God. Here Torrance conveys a simple message - the doctrine of the Trinity is the doctrine of God. This Cornerstones edition includes a new introduction written by Professor Paul D. Molnar, in which Molnar sets Torrance's classic work in its modern context and considers how it continues to influence the way we think about the Trinity today.

Book The Christian Doctrine of Faith Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Doctrine of Faith Classic Reprint written by James Hastings and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Faith This is not a theological treatise on the one hand, nor on the other is it a volume of sermons. Like its predecessor, the volume on Prayer, it has a distinct office to fulfil, an office that in the judgment of the editor is of immense importance. For between the professor's lecture-room and the preacher's study there is a great gulf fixed. In the lecture-room the lectures on systematic theology are laboriously entered into notebooks, which are useful for the exit examinations. But when the active work of the ministry begins, and so many sermons have to be prepared every week, the cupboard into which those notebooks have been stowed away is left undisturbed. The preacher begins to Spin his sermons out of his own brains, with the assistance of such popular books as happen to be at his hand. Book The Christian Doctrine of Salvation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Doctrine of Salvation Classic Reprint written by George Barker Stevens and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Salvation The aim of the present work is to present a biblical, historical, and constructive discussion of the Christian doctrine of salvation. The theme has been regarded and treated primarily as a subject of investigation. I have accordingly approached it from the historical side, and have aimed to state the problems to be considered and to define my positions respecting them in an historical and inductive method. I have tried to judge the various opinions reviewed and to test my own by means of the fundamental Christian concepts of God and of man. The treatment has been made as objective as possible. It has been my aim to describe and estimate conflicting theories with fairness. My own judgments, with the reasons for them, have been frankly given. It is not to be expected, of course, that they will commend themselves to the acceptance of all readers, but I trust that those who may dissent from them may still find something in the book by which they may be interested or instructed. The present discussion presupposes a general knowledge of Biblical Theology and of the History of Christian Doctrine, such as is furnished by the relevant sections of my Theology of the New Testament and Professor Fisher's History of Christian Doctrine, earlier volumes of the International Theological Library. Book The Christian Doctrine of Reconciliation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Doctrine of Reconciliation Classic Reprint written by James Denney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Reconciliation Reconciliation is a term of wide scope and various applica tion, and it is hardly possible to conceive a life or a religion which should dispense with it. There is always some kind Of strain or tension between man and his environment, and man has always an interest in overcoming the strain, in re solving the discord in his situation into a harmony, in getting the environment to be his ally rather than his adversary. The process by which his end is attained may be described 'as one of reconciliation, but whether the reconciliation is adequate depends on whether his conception Of the environ ment is equal to the truth. Men may be very dimly and imperfectly conscious of the nature Of the strain which dis quiets their life, and may seek to Overcome it in blind and insufficient ways. They may interpret it as physical in its origin when it is really ethical, or as the misapprehension of a moral order when it is really antagonism to a personal God, and in either case the reconciliation they seek will fail to give the peace of which they are in quest. Nevertheless, reconciliation and nothing else is what they want, and its place in religion is central and vital. Book Outlines of Christian Doctrine Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of Christian Doctrine Classic Reprint written by Handley Carr Glyn Moule and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Christian Doctrine The present short treatise was at first planned in the form of a Commentary upon the Thirty-Nine Articles. As the work proceeded the author was led to think that a sketch of the main doctrines of the Faith might be more generally useful, which, while always keeping in view the great historic Confession of the Church of which he thanks God he is a son and presbyter, should omit some topics contained in it and deal with others in a way somewhat different from that of a commentary. The work makes not the least pretension either to originality or to fulness. It will have well served its purpose if in any degree it can stimulate its readers to personal study, and suggest lines for work and thought. The author humbly trusts that what he has written has been written "at the foot of the Cross." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Creation and Redemption, Vol. 2: Dogmatics During my last visit to the United States, which took place shortly after the publication of the first volume of the Dogma tics, a theological colleague expressed the desire that I would develop further the point of View contained in my book, The divine-human Encounter (wahrheit als Begegnung). He urged that he regarded this view as decisive for the develop ment of theology, and that he wished me to expand it within the whole framework of Christian doctrine. I replied, that I had already made a beginning in The Christian Doctrine of God, and that what I had begun in that volume was being expanded in two later volumes. Book The Christian Doctrine of Justification and Reconciliation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Doctrine of Justification and Reconciliation Classic Reprint written by Albrecht Ritschl and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Justification and Reconciliation There is reason to believe that an English translation of Ritschl'8 greatest work is not inopportune at the present moment The attention paid in Britain to this theologian's doctrinal system has been steadily deepening for some years. Such works as Denney's Studies in Theology, Orr's The llitschlian Theology and the Evangelical Faith, and Game's The Ritschlian Theology, are enough to prove how profound is the interest felt here in the methods and conclusions of a movement which has had so remarkable an influence in Germany. Of this movement the primary source was Ritschl's monumental work, The Christian Doctrine of Justification and Reconciliation (1870-1874). Not since Schleiermacher published his Christliche Glaube in 1821 has any dogmatic treatise left its mark so deeply upon theological thought in Germany and throughout the world. Schleiermacher's masterpiece, unfortunately, is inaccessible to the English reader; and it was felt that were the magnum opus of his most notable successor also to remain untranslated, the loss to English students of theology would be doubly regrettable. The first volume of the German work, containing the history of the doctrine, was published in an English rendering as far back as 1872. The third volume, of which a translation is now furnished for the first time, has the supreme interest of presenting us with Ritschl's own theological system. Download or read book The Doctrine of the Ages Classic Reprint written by Robert Cameron and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-25 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Ages The substance of this book, in all of its essen tial features, was carefully read by the late Dr. A. J. Gordon, in manuscript. He urged its immediate publication, and consented to write an introduction to its pages. Before the closing chapters were completed he had passed away from his useful life. On this account his name has no connection with the book, further than this grateful acknowledgment of his encouraging words. The learned Dr. Harnack, in his History of Dogma, when speaking of the Christian's faith in God as the father of Jesus Christ, makes the following comprehensive statement: So far as this God is believed to be the omnipotent Lord of heaven and earth, the Christian religion includes a knowledge of God, of the world, and of the purpose of created things. These three spheres, then, are the proper objects of our contemplation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
