Book The Christ of History and of Experience Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christ of History and of Experience Classic Reprint written by David William Forrest and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christ of History and of Experience During the four years that have elapsed since the publication of this book, the subject of which it treats - the problem raised by the union of the Historical and the Spiritual in Christianity - has come more and more into prominence. Modern critical theories as to the Gospel records are forcing the question to the front on its historical side; and its pressing theological interest, as attested by prevalent Hegelian and Ritschlian tendencies, has received a further illustration in the rise of the school of Religious Symbolism represented by the late Auguste Sabatier. In the discussion of this central problem for Christian faith to-day, perhaps some may find the line taken in these Lectures not unhelpful. It may be affirmed with confidence that no theory will long commend itself which is not primarily founded on a penetrative analysis of the self-consciousness of Jesus. The view adopted in the first Lecture, that our Lord abstained from uniting in prayer with His disciples, has been strongly contested by the late Professor Bruce. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Experiences, Gospel Labours and Writings Although my intimacy with our deceased friend was but of later years, yet I find something in my to write concerning him, and in commemoration of God's blessed power, and word of life that reached him, and made him through faith and obedience unto the Lord Jesus Christ, what he was; for that is it which is most worthy of praise, and without it we are nothing, nor able to do any thing that tends to our own peace, or the benefit of others. And it was by this, the Lord in the morning of this blessed day, that he hath caused to spring from on high, visited his soul in this latter age of the world; wherein, after a night of darkness, and time of apostacy, he was graciously pleased, (by that divine and heavenly light, which he, in the beginning caused to shine out of darkness, to shine into the hearts of many, and gave unto them the light of the knowledge of his glory, in the face of Christ Jesus, and made them possessors of this treasure in their earthen vessels, that were poor and despicable instruments in the eyes of the worldly wise and their own, yet fitted and raised up by the power of him that raised up our Lord Jesus from the dead, commissionated and sent forth by the Lord, in the evidence and demonstration of his eternal Spirit, ) to publish the glad tidings of peace, to preach the gospel of life and salvation, and to turn people from darkness to light, from the power of Satan to God; that they might know remission of sin, and an inheritance among them that are sanctified through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, the true Light that lighteth every man that cometh into the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Experience: Or a Guide to the Perplexed The following simple, and almost conversational Essays, are the substance .of actual conversations with the Perplexed. In the Preface to the First Edition it was said, "How far they will meet the case of that class, at large, the Author does not venture to conjecture." Conjecture is now needless; they have proved a "Guide" to many. It would evince ingratitude to God, if not insensibility, to conceal this pleasing fact. To his Fathers and Brethren, who have adopted the "Guide," as a manual for the Perplexed, the Author feels himself under great obligation. Their sanction is not the least cause of its success. And, should the companion to this work, "Communion with God, or a Guide to the Devotional," obtain, or deserve the same sanction and success, he will be encouraged to persevere in a "line of things," which, at first, did not seem to be his "own." For it was not in this " way," he expected to "glorify God." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Jesus Christ and the Christian Character Classic Reprint

Download or read book Jesus Christ and the Christian Character Classic Reprint written by Francis Greenwood Peabody and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus Christ and the Christian Character When one turns with this new problem to the Gospels, he discovers with fresh surprise the ex traordinary richness and variety of the teaching of Jesus. Each period in history goes with its question to the simple record, and finds an an swer which seems written to meet the special problem of the time. In an age of theology the Gospels were a source of theological doctrine; in an age of ecclesiasticism they fortified the Church; in an age of emotionalism they kindled the flame of piety. The same adaptability is now discovered once more by the age of the Social Question. As others have found in the teaching of Jesus the key Of doctrine or organization or religious experience, so there is now delivered by the same teaching to the mind of the present age a key of the Social Question. Remote from the condition of the modern world as was the life of Jesus, and pri marily directed as was his teaching, not to social but to spiritual ends, he has much to say of social duty. His ethics are not individualist, atomic, a doctrine of the single soul; but organic, social, a doctrine Of the common life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Experience: As Displayed in the Life and Writings of Saint Paul This little Treatise has no pretensions to novelty, being on subjects which form the daily meditation of the devout Christian, and from which he derives his purest enjoyment: neither does the Author presume to vie with those, whose works on the life of St. Paul, have enriched the stores of Sacred Literature. His design in publishing these thoughts on the Experience of the Apostle, is, in some feeble measure to exhibit the beauty of Evangelical Religion: by bringing into one view, the varied excellencies of his character; and by unfolding those principles of faith and love, which, through the Spirit, made him so great a blessing to mankind. Christianity is the religion of the heart. Every doctrine of the Gospel is a sacred spring of holiness. In These pages, the Author has therefore endeavoured to treat these mysteries of grace, not controversially, but practically: not as subjects for speculation, but as sources of peace and joy. In saving sinful men may not God proceed in an emergent and haphazard fashion, adjusting his saving acts to the Circumstances as they occur in human history? May not the facts of the Gospel be without order, incapable of being reduced to any programme whatsoever? If so, there can be no soteriology, o-r systematic exposition of a gospel plan of salvation. There are three proofs for the fact of an ordo salu tis: (i) biblical, (2) logical, (3) analogical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Doctrine and Doubt Or Christ the Centre of Christianity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Doctrine and Doubt Or Christ the Centre of Christianity Classic Reprint written by Samuel Macnaughton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Doctrine and Doubt, or Christ the Centre of Christianity A mind that is perplexed by doubt can deal only with facts. The fact of sin is known, and is not disputed. Theories respecting the origin Of sin and its transmission will only introduce uncertainty, and should not be. Undertaken at this stage Of mental and spiritual experience. The historical Christ is a fact. His life, and death, and resurrection can be established as historical facts, apart altogether from the question of Inspiration. Here is sure standing ground. His sympathy, profound teaching, and mighty works prove Him to be a worthy Mediator between God and man. His life of self - denial and self-sacrifice proves Him to be the Friend Of man. His sinless life, the power Of His teaching, His miracles of healing, - all acknow ledged by His enemies, - and the prophecy Of His own death and resurrection, are more than sufficient to stamp his words with the seal of absolute truth. But He claimed to have come from God, and that He was one with God. If these claims were not true, then His God-given power would necessarily have been withdrawn by a holy God. His own testi mony, therefore, proves His divinity. There is no alternative between accepting His real divin1ty and proclaiming Him an impostor. Book The Holy Spirit in Faith and Experience Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Holy Spirit in Faith and Experience Classic Reprint written by A. Lewis Humphries and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Spirit in Faith and Experience The author of this volume cannot claim, as his justification for issuing it, that there is a dearth of books on the Holy Spirit. On that subject there have been issued many volumes of varying degrees of value and interest, and of diverse types, - doctrinal, exegetical, devotional, - and to add another to the list seems almost presumptuous. Nevertheless, apart from the interest which he has long felt in the subject, the writer has the impression that there is a place for a discussion of the doctrine of the Spirit which aims to be not merely exegetical but critical. The first and clearest duty of any Christian teacher towards the Bible is to understand it, to realise with sympathy the point of view of its writers, to put himself inside, so to speak, their doctrinal conceptions. But his next and scarcely less imperative duty is to supplement comprehension with criticism, and to ask how far the Biblical presentation of a certain belief or experience can stand without qualification in the light of to-day. In the field of exegesis much excellent work on the subject of the Holy Spirit has already been done, and that of this the present writer has been gratefully mindful will, he hopes, sufficiently appear in the foot-notes which mark the ensuing pages. Book Realities of Christian Theology

Download or read book Realities of Christian Theology written by Clarence Augustine Beckwith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Realities of Christian Theology: An Interpretation of Christian Experience Theological discussion is confronted by manifold difficulties. One person comes to it for metaphysics, another for history or tradition, a third for the working over of the Scriptures, while still another is satisfied only when he finds his own views exactly reproduced. On the one hand, we are advised that the time is ripe for a reconstruction of theology, and are treated to fruitful suggestions along this line; on the other hand, we are warned that a reconstruction of theology is hopeless, since, without an accepted cosmology or metaphysics, it provides no material for the system builder. On one subject, however, there is universal agreement: whatever the differences of past or present explanations of Christian belief, the Christian experience of to-day is essentially the same that it has been from the beginning. It cannot, therefore, be wholly in vain to attempt a fresh interpretation of Christian experience in terms of modern intelligence. With this conviction, the present work has been undertaken. The Scriptures have been used, so far as they present the highest type of Christian experience and provide material for its realization. The great confessions and the chief theologians of the church have been consulted with a constructive - but never with a controversial - aim. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theology of Christ: From His Own Words I am the light of the world; he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. This book does not attempt to delineate the life of Christ, but to evolve, directly and exclusively from His own words, the Doctrine that He taught.
