Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christ Has Come: The Second Advent an Event of the Past; An Appeal From Human Tradition to the Teaching of Jesus and His Apostles History, of course, is constantly repeating itself, and great events may present a striking analogy to one another. Yet, although the illustrations of a passage of scripture may be many, the meaning intended to be conveyed by it is in every case direct and simple. The judgment of Babylon, or Nineveh, or Jerusalem, may be a type of every other similar judgment, and is a warning to all nations and ages. But this is very different from saying that the language in which that judgment was predicted was fulfilled only partially when Babylon, or Nineveh, or Jerusalem fell, and is yet awaiting its complete fulfilment. Scripture, like other books, has one' meanin g [that] which it had to the mind of the prophet or evangelist who first uttered or wrote it to the hearers or readers who first received it. [this meaning] is to be gathered from [the Scripture] itself without reference to the adaptations of fathers or divines, and without regard to a priori notions about its nature and origin. The office of the interpreter is not to add another [signification], but to recover the original one: the meaning, that is, of the words as they struck on the ears or flashed before the eyes - of those, who first heard and read them. Now, unless Words do not mean what they say, it is certain that not only in the Apocalypse and the Epistles, but also in the Gospels, the second coming of Jesus had narrow limitations of time assigned to it. These coincide unmistakably with the winding up of the Jewish age at the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 a.d. The New Testament writers were entirely of one mind as to the speedy advent of the heavenly King and the heavenly kingdom. In the four gospels Christ's own pre dictions on the subject are numerous and emphatic, and are expressed in great variety of language. The words attributed to Him are free from all ambiguity. To deny (as some do) that His utterances are correctly reported is to strike a fatal blow at the integrity of the Gospel records, and to make it uncertain what His real teaching on any subject was. Book The Joy of the Gospel

Download or read book The Joy of the Gospel written by Pope Francis and published by Image. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Book The Second Advent of the Lord Jesus Christ a Past Event

Download or read book The Second Advent of the Lord Jesus Christ a Past Event written by Robert Townley and published by Theclassics.Us. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1845 edition. Excerpt: ... taught his disciples, was for that kingdom in which they should sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. The Baptist fulfilled his commission, and then disappeared from the stage of God's dispensations. His ministry was complete in itself. There was no succession to that ministry; and I trust we shall be able satisfactorily to prove, indeed we have already proved, that it is as reasonable for modern ministers to affirm that they are successors of John the Baptist, as it is to speak and act in the character of successors of the Apostles, which is a charge that fairly attaches to them, from the highest Calvinist down to the lowest Arminian. We have now considered, at some length, the ministry of John. That ministry appears to me to require a much more minute investigation than the compass of this work will allow. The records which are left concerning it in the Gospels, are most pointed and peculiar. It appears also that these records are of such character and complexion, because John's ministry was the connecting link between the Law and the Gospel, the Old Testament and the New; or, in other words, between the natural man and the spiritual, that is, the covenant of works, and the covenant of grace. It has been proved that John's ministry was prophesied of in the Old Testament, and that the ministry was fixed, as regards time, "before the coming of the Lord." It has been seen that John occupied the position which had been assigned to him; that he rose a star in the firmament of the church, at the season appointed of the Father. So far, then, all is well; a due order and arrangement is preserved; of all the good things which the Lord had promised Israel should come to pass in the last days, not one thing has failed...
