COUNSELS CONCERNING A RELIGIOUS VOCATION. I. We ought to conform to the Designs of God in the Choice of a State of Life, whatever it may be. It is evident that our eternal salvation depends principally upon the choice of our state of life. Father Granada calls this choice the chief wheel of our whole life. Hence, as when in a clock the chief wheel is deranged, the whole clock is also deranged, so in the order of our salvation, if we make a mistake as to the state to which we are called, our whole life, as St. Gregory Nazianzen says, will be an error. If, then, in the choice of a state of life, we wish to secure our eternal salvation, we must embrace that to which God calls us, in which only God prepares for us the efficacious means necessary to our salvation. For, as St Cyprian says: "The grace of the Holy Spirit is given according to the order of God, and not according to our own will;" and therefore St. Paul writes, Every one hath his proper gift from God." That is, as Cornelius a Lapide explains it, God gives to everyone his vocation, and chooses the state in which he wills him to be saved. And this is the order of predestination described by the same apostle: Whom he predestinated, them he also called; and whom he called, them he also justified, . . . and them he also glorified. We must remark that in the world this doctrine of the vocation is not much studied by some persons. They think it to be all the same, whether they live in the state to which God calls them, or in that which they choose of their own inclination, and therefore so many live a bad life.

Book The Age of Responsibility

Download or read book The Age of Responsibility written by Yascha Mounk and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-09 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice Responsibility—which once meant the moral duty to help and support others—has come to be equated with an obligation to be self-sufficient. This has guided recent reforms of the welfare state, making key entitlements conditional on good behavior. Drawing on political theory and moral philosophy, Yascha Mounk shows why this re-imagining of personal responsibility is pernicious—and suggests how it might be overcome. “This important book prompts us to reconsider the role of luck and choice in debates about welfare, and to rethink our mutual responsibilities as citizens.” —Michael J. Sandel, author of Justice “A smart and engaging book... Do we so value holding people accountable that we are willing to jeopardize our own welfare for a proper comeuppance?” —New York Times Book Review “An important new book... [Mounk] mounts a compelling case that political rhetoric...has shifted over the last half century toward a markedly punitive vision of social welfare.” —Los Angeles Review of Books “A terrific book. The insight at its heart—that the conception of responsibility now at work in much public rhetoric and policy is both punitive and ill-conceived—is very important and should be widely heeded.” —Jedediah Purdy, author of After Nature: A Politics for the Anthropocene

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order, then, to attach ourselves to this great means of salvation, we must first of all consider how necessary it is to us, and how powerful it is to obtain for us all the graces that we can desire from God, if we know how to ask for them as we ought. Hence, in the first part, we will speak first of the necessity and power of prayer; and next, of the conditions necessary to make it efficacious with God. Then, in the second part, we will show that the grace of prayer is given to all; and there we will treat of the manner in which grace ordinarily operates. Aeterna Press

Book Choice of a State of Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Choice of a State of Life Classic Reprint written by Carlo Gregorio Rosignoli and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Choice of a State of Life I have been induced, my dear reader, to prepare this little work on the Choice of a State of Life, by an earnest desire to give you a faithful guide through the darkness that surrounds you in this world. And this desire is the more ardent, because those that choose well are often led to heaven, whilst such as make a bad choice, are generally lost for all eternity. For a time I hesitated to present you with this little volume, lest you might imagine that I wished to draw you to the religious state. But the extreme need in which young persons stand of help and advice, and their inclination to decide without reflection, have caused me to disregard that objection: and I declare, my dear child, that it is the same to me, whether you become a religious, or lead a life in the world. My only desire is, that you should lead a holy life, and die a happy death. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Christian State of Life

Download or read book The Christian State of Life written by Hans Urs Von Balthasar and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2012-07-09 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, one of von Balthasar's masterworks, is a profound meditation on the Christian's choice of a state of life according to God's will. It discusses the lay, religious, and priestly states of life, and examines the ways in which we recognize and respond to the call of God. Written in a deeply Ignatian spirit, the book provides a comprehensive meditation on Saint Ignatius' ""Call of Christ"" and demonstrates that we must answer Christ's call if we want ""to give greater proof of our love"". The goal of this meditation is to understand why the act of choosing a state of life is possible and necessary-so that we can arrive at the perfection of Christian love in whatever state or way of life God may grant us to choose. It affirms that the act of choosing a Christian state of life is found in the Gospels and emanates from the personal meeting of the believer with Jesus Christ. Among the topics in this book are the following: The Great Commandment, Creation and Service, Grace and Mission, Image and Truth, The Nature of the Call, and The Historical Actuality of the Call. ""A milestone in the Catholic theology of vocation. This book could change your life."" - America
