Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chitral Campaign: A Narrative of Events in Chitral, Swat, and Bajour How this book comes to be written requires a word of explanation. At the beginning of the year I had to go to India on business, and on my arrival in Bombay on March 15th, I found that a force was to be sent through Swat and Bajour to relieve the beleaguered garrison of Chitral. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who, or why, or how or what? opens one of Edward Lear s limericks Is the Akond of Swat? The answer to the question lies within this book - a newspaperman s account of a British military expedition mounted against Chtral, Swat and Bajour in 1895. The Akond was the religious leader of Swat, an area on India s ever turbulent north-west fronteir, renowned for its religious piety and its jealously preserved Purdah ( the word literally means curtain ) which was kept firmly closed against foreign incursions until the campaign narrated in this book. This is an excellent account of a colonial campaign in a tough area where the truculence of the tribespeople towards the British is more than matched by the harshness of the terrain.Thompson s prose is clear and straightforward and the events he recounts exciting and tense. He makes no pretence to be writing an official history, but, what is possibly more valuable, tells a great story. The book is profusely illustrated with some sixty photographs, plus sketches, plans and maps. A must for anyone interested in British India in late Victorian times.

This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through Three Campaigns A Story of Chitral, Tirah and Ashanti: Large Print By G. A. Henty Preface. Our little wars attract far less attention among the people of this country than they deserve. They are frequently carried out in circumstances of the most adverse kind. Our enemies, although ignorant of military discipline are, as a rule, extremely brave; and are thoroughly capable of using the natural advantages of their country. Our men are called upon to bear enormous fatigue, and endure extremes in climate. The fighting is incessant, the peril constant. Nevertheless, they show a magnificent contempt for danger and difficulty; and fight with a valour and determination worthy of the highest praise. I have chosen, as an illustration of this, three campaigns; namely, the relief of Chitral, the Tirah campaign, and the relief of Coomassie. The first two were conducted in a mountainous country, affording every advantage to the enemy; where passes had to be scaled, torrents to be forded, and deep snow to be crossed. In the other, the country was a combination of morass and thick forest, frequently intersected by wide and deep rivers. The work, moreover, had to be done in a tropical climate, during the rainy season. The conditions, therefore, were much more trying than in the case of former expeditions which had crossed the same ground and, in addition, the enemy were vastly more numerous and more determined; and had, in recent years, mastered the art of building extremely formidable stockades. The country has a right to be proud, indeed, of the prowess both of our own troops and of our native regiments. Boys who wish to obtain fuller details of these campaigns I would refer to Sir George Robertson's Chitral; H. C. Thomson's Chitral Campaign; Lieutenant Beynon's With Kelly to Chitral; Colonel Hutchison's Campaign in Tirah; Viscount Fincastle and P. C. Eliott Lockhart's A Frontier Campaign; and Captain Harold C. J. Biss's The Relief of Kumasi, from which I have principally drawn the historical portion of my story. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.
