When the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci (1552-1610) introduced the Chinese term Shangti as the semantic equivalent of Deus, he made one of the most innovative cross-cultural missionary translations. Ricci's employment of Shangti was neither a simple rewording of a Chinese term nor the use of a loan-word, but was indeed a risk-taking «identification» of the Christian God with the Confucian Most-High, Shangti. Strange Names of God investigates the historical progress of the semantic configuration of Shangti as the divine name of the Christian God in China by focusing on Chinese intellectuals' reaction to the strangely translated Chinese name of God.

Excerpt: ...how they should be ranked below another class of beings worshipped on the same occasion: but if we consider the Shins as mere spirits, the representation of the classic is of easy explanation. In the Commentary on the Yih-king, it is asked, " If Heaven does not oppose, how can men, and how can the Kwei Shins?" Here Heaven evidently refers to the Divinity, in the Chinese estimation, whose opposition not being manifested, the opposition of the Kwei Shin would fa: ine'fectual. The Kwei Shin therefore, as spirits are distinct from the Divinity, and unable to oppose him. Another commentator says, "those who confer benefits arc men, tho-e who do not oppose are the Kwei Shins: but we must act agreeably to the mind of Heaven, before we can obtain such results." Here also the subjection of the Kwei Shins, as spirits, to H 'avett or the Divinity i clear. Again, "In this diagram, after saying that the divinations do not oppose, it follows that the Kwei Shins are compliant; but ih writer carries the idea further up to Shan;-te, without whom the Kwei Shins of the hills and rivers could do nothing with the di.gtaros. Thus it appears, that Te is Lord of the hundred Shins, and when blessings come from above, it shew-) that the mind of Heaven is grati. fied, and that neither men nor Shins can oppose." From the above extracts it is evident, that Heaven, Te, or Shang-te, is the Supreme Power, and that the Kwei Shins are spirits, who cannot oppose his will, because he is Lord of the hundred Shins. If in all this we render the phrase Kwei Shins by spirits, we see no difficulty, because spirits, viewed as mere invisible intelligences, are undoubtedly subject to the. Ruler of all. These sounds were gathered by diplomats, trade officials, missionaries, and other travelers and transmitted back to Europe, where they were reconstructed in the imaginations of writers, philosophers, and music historians such as Jean-Philippe Rameau, Johann Nikolaus Forkel, and Charles Burney. Thomas Irvine gathers these stories in Listening to China, exploring how the sonic encounter with China shaped perceptions of Europe’s own musical development. Through these stories, Irvine not only investigates how the Sino-Western encounter sounded, but also traces the West’s shifting response to China. As the trading relationships between China and the West broke down, travelers and music theorists abandoned the vision of shared musical approaches, focusing instead on China’s noisiness and sonic disorder and finding less to like in its music. At the same time, Irvine reconsiders the idea of a specifically Western music history, revealing that it was comparison with China, the great “other,” that helped this idea emerge.
