Altogether there are now 217 Chinese students in the United States, of whom 122 are in universities or technical schools. There are also an increasing number in England, Germany, and Belgium. The tide seems to have turned against sending young men to study in Japan. The Chinese government has become alarmed by the fact that many of those who have spent a short time in Tokyo have come back to China and disseminated the most revolutionary political doctrines. Although a large number of those successful at the recent examination in Peking were educated in Japan, nevertheless there has been a distinct decline in the enthusiasm formerly felt for what seemed to be a short road to enlightenment, name ly, a few months' study in Japan.
