Book The Chinese Overseas

Download or read book The Chinese Overseas written by Wang Gungwu and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese overseas now number 25 to 30 million, yet the 2,000-year history of Chinese attempts to venture abroad and the underlying values affecting that migration have never before been presented in a broad overview. Despite centuries of prohibition against leaving the land and traveling and settling overseas, the earthbound Chinese--first traders, then peasants and workers--eventually found new sources of livelihood abroad. The practice of sojourning, being always temporarily away from home, was the answer the Chinese overseas found to deal with imperial and orthodox concerns. Today their challenge is to find an alternative to either returning or assimilating by seeking a new kind of autonomy in a world that will come to acknowledge the ideal of multicultural states. In pursuing this story, international scholar Wang Gungwu uncovers some major themes of global history: the coming together of Asian and European civilizations, the ambiguities of ethnicity and diasporic consciousness, and the tension between maintaining one's culture and assimilation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chinese Miscellanies: A Collection of Essays and Notes This cordial cc-operation may be traced without difficulty to the generous and wise policy with which Great Britain extended the commercial and other rights, which she acquired by her original and unaided war, to all other nations.2 Having been the first to inaugu rate the freedom and community of trade at home, she followed up that wise policy abroad by the noble and generous (and no less wise) course of fighting and ne gotiating, not for herself only, but for the whole civilized world. It is thus that peace and mutual good offices are perpetuated for half a century between the most powerful nations and that, for just fifty years, England and France, instead of wasting each other's strength only to end where they began, have combined their forces and fought side by side as close allies in all parts of the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2009 the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies convened a major conference to discuss the health and longevity of China’s ruling system and to consider a fundamental question: After three decades of internal strife and turmoil, followed by an era of reform, entrepreneurialism, and internationalization, is the PRC here for the dynastic long haul? Bringing together scholars and students of China from around the world, the gathering witnessed an energetic exchange of views on four interrelated themes: polities, social transformations, wealth and well-being, and culture, belief, and practice. Edited and expanded from the original conference papers, the wide-ranging essays in this bilingual volume remain true to the conference’s aim: to promote open discussion of the past, present, and future of the People’s Republic of China.

Book Chinese Ladies at Home Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chinese Ladies at Home Classic Reprint written by Margaret Maclean and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chinese Ladies at Home Nanking Road is the fashionable drive, and in the late afternoon it is thronged with people, both Chinese and foreign, showing-oh themselves and their carriages. Carriage attendants are called, Mafoo, and no matter how many there may be the coachman is No. I. Mafoo; these creatures are the most ludicrous to be seen in Shanghai. Picture, and keep from smiling if you can, a lady dressed in the latest Parisian fashion driving in a stylish dog cart with her Mafoo (footman) standing behind, dressed in a dirty white night shirt looking garment upon which lies his long black queue like a spinal column, and on his head a light brown Fedora.' This is not an exaggeration. I saw it. The Mafoo are miserable looking beings in a laughable uniform, but in a fine one they look worse, for then the dirt and general unattractiveness of the wearer is accentuated. The really correct dress for a Mafoo could not be told, for fancy seemed to run riot. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from China, Present and Past: Foreign Intercourse, Progress and Resources; The Missionary Question, Etc A general impression seems to prevail that there will be a great forward movement, in China, as a consequence of the present war. The lesson which was only half learned in 1858, because She attributed her defeat to the superiority, solely, of foreign weapons, and which was obscured, in 1885, by the inconclusive results of the fighting in Formosa and Tongking - is being driven home, now, by her Obvious inability to make head against a country whose extent and resources she knows to be incom parably less than her own. Rightly or wrongly, moreover, Japan is credited with a determination that the lesson Shall reach home; that the pre tensions which Western Powers have been willing to demolish gradually, by the logic of experience and fact, Shall be swept finally into the limbo of the past to which they belong, and that China Shall be brought to range herself alongside Japan in the path of reorganization and reform. Book The Chinese Information War

Download or read book The Chinese Information War written by Dennis F. Poindexter and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-06-07 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's information war against the United States is clever technically, broadly applied and successful. The intelligence community in the U.S. has publicly stated this is a kind of war we do not know how to fight--yet it is the U.S. military that developed and expanded the doctrine of information war. In fact, the U.S. military is at a disadvantage because it is part of a democratic, decentralized system of government that separates the state from commercial business. China's political systems are more easily adapted to this form of warfare, as their recent land seizures in the South China Sea demonstrate. We call this annexation, when it is a new form of conquest.

Book The Power of Print in Modern China

Download or read book The Power of Print in Modern China written by Robert Culp and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid early twentieth-century China’s epochal shifts, a vital and prolific commercial publishing industry emerged. Recruiting late Qing literati, foreign-trained academics, and recent graduates of the modernized school system to work as authors and editors, publishers produced textbooks, reference books, book series, and reprints of classical texts in large quantities at a significant profit. Work for major publishers provided a living to many Chinese intellectuals and offered them a platform to transform Chinese cultural life. In The Power of Print in Modern China, Robert Culp explores the world of commercial publishing to offer a new perspective on modern China’s cultural transformations. Culp examines China’s largest and most influential publishing companies—Commercial Press, Zhonghua Book Company, and World Book Company—during the late Qing and Republican periods and into the early years of the People’s Republic. He reconstructs editors’ cultural activities and work lives as a lens onto the role of intellectuals in cultural change. Examining China’s distinct modes of industrial publishing, Culp explains the emergence of the modern Chinese intellectual through commercial and industrial processes rather than solely through political revolution and social movements. An original account of Chinese intellectual and cultural history as well as global book history, The Power of Print in Modern China illuminates the production of new forms of knowledge and culture in the twentieth century.
